  • Will you admit you've named your car? 7 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Here we go; the cars my wife and I have owned and their monikers: Mini = Oscar Lada = Larry Cavalier = Cap'tn Cav Punto = Peter Mondeo = Monty Fiesta = Fast Freddie Capri = Caspar Capri No. 2 = Caspar 2 Escort = Essie Volvo S60 = Vinnie (Soon to arrive) Almera = Alfie Quite a few of the cars have had other names at other times, most of them rude and said whilst trying to get them started. Should I be stood in the corner of the backroom in shame or is anyone brave enough to admit their fondness for their car has spilled over into naming them?
  • m40 burnt out car transporter. 31 May 2005 (Forum)
Hard to tell what they were but all were estates, and judging by the rear light holes high up the rear pillars they looked like Accord tourers, possibly volvos. Hard to tell when the car is stripped of all mouldings and bumpers. Huge Q northbound, a large percentage had been there so long people were wandering all over the place, some were even having street parties.
  • Is your car losing oil? 10 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I have not needed to top up the oil in any my cars for about 15 years now, and wouldn't know what oil to use if I did. The Volvos and Subarus I've had have been oil tight. Never a sniff on the casing. Quite different to my Wolseley and all prior thereto. My sister once said, "Get that heap of scrap off my path." I used to rely on the leakage to keep the underside of the cars rust free.
  • GM Europe making a mess 23 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Crazy - who wants to buy a Saab if they are all made and designed outside Sweden - they will have no USP - thats the only reason to buy one - they are not German and not Volvo. ALso, they have too much petrol engine production and not enought diesel. In the 1980s they had a superb line up. They have lost there wasy and even Opel is considered a liability as a brand.
  • 306 td? d turbo? hdi? 16 Sep 2004 (Forum)

  • ever wider cars... 12 Sep 2004 (Forum)
The mark V Golf was a shoe-in for replacement of my P reg one until I found it had put on four inches in width and so wouldn't fit the garage. Other marques (Volvo, Toyota) seem the same for their equivalent models. There must be a niche market for £15-20000 type cars whose owners like locking them away at night, but so far I've only found the Lexus is200 as comparatively skinny.
  • Frugal MPV 20 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Well I knew the MPG figure for my Mazda MPV (2.0 litre turbodiesel) would be be far better than my old Volvo but didn't think it would ever be this good (despite the manufacturer's claims)! Having set the odometer to zero last time I filled up and brimmed the tank again this morning after 314 miles of mixed motoring I've just calculated a figure of 42 mpg !!!
  • Engine steam clean, or not? 10 May 2004 (Forum)
Apart from aesthetics, are there also problems with electrical nasties arising from high pressure cleaning? So, should I go ahead and steam clean? The car is a Volvo S80 in (as far as I know) perfect order - mechanically, externally and internally. Thanks
  • Car insurance groups 6 Feb 2004 (Forum)
These are set by the ABI for UK cars and they have a very useful search engine for finding the insurance groups of current model cars. I wanted to do some research about possible cars to replace the volvo including the likely change in insurance costs. http://www.abi.org.uk/carinsurance/search.asp hope that somebody finds this useful, perhaps HJ will add this to the FAQ Ian
  • Company car opt out 22 Jan 2004 (Forum)
The alternative is to maybe buy a new or ex demo V70 or go for a Merc E320cdi on lease. As it is now "my money" I'm spending should I keep the BMW, buy a Volvo or lease a Merc. I guess I'm looking to save money for myself.

  • Which diesel auto estate? 4 Feb 2003 (Forum)
So I have a limited choice, several candidates are not available as auto diesel e.g. new Mondeo and I fear BMW and Mercedes are too pricey. My shortlist is looking like: Citroen C5 VW Passat 130 Rover 75 Volvo V70 I would really appreciate any comments on these or alternative diesel auto estates which I may have overlooked. Thanks - BB
  • Brand Loyalty 30 Dec 2002 (Forum)
In the past most British manufacturers went through periods of producing awful cars and yet owners went back time and time again to trade in their old model. There is much the same syndrome displayed in the Backroom. Time after time we get the Volvo/Citroen/Skoda etc owner taking any excuse to extol the virtues of their own choice of car. True it may be just perfect, but we can be forgiven for thinking it is hardly objective! - the Mandy Rice-Davies factor as someone called it in an earlier thread.
  • Eurpoe Breakdown ins for cars over 10 yrs 6 Feb 2002 (Forum)
My Volvo 940 GLE Nov 1991, is clearly over 10 years old. National Breakdown no longer cover cars over 10 year old for Europe. As with all big Sweedish Volovs {not the Dutch ones} its in first class condition bodily and has only covered 90 odd thousand miles.
  • Rust on Mid 1990 cars - which manufacturer is wors 29 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Why is it that some makes - Rover, Ford, etc. have serious rust / corrosion at this age, whilst other such as Volvo, Audi, VW, etc. show no sign or rust? Why don't companies realise that, not only does rust depress resale values and reputations, but also, corrosion seriously compromises the strength of the car?

  • Small MPV 7 Mar 2001 (Forum)
I need to replace my old Volvo and I have been looking at the mini MPV's by Renault, Nissan Citroen etc. I seem to have narrowed it down to the Tino and the Scenic, but they both have their pro's and con's, the Tino has the Nissan reliablity and has more space inside and looks ok from the outside, but is let down by the dash, plasticky and noisy wiper system(on the one I tried).

  • Audi S8 - What does your car say about you? 22 Aug 2011 (Forum)
I have started a new job and a car comes with it, in a fashion.  I can choose any car from Chevy, Ford, Mazda, Vauxhall and Volvo ranges.  I get a set amount each month for the lease of the car for 3 years and can trade up or down from that limit by as much as I want for any of the cars available i.e. the Camaro is not available but a Volvo C30 T5 is.
