Professional driving lessons a necessity? 12 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I'm not shooting down Rattle's comment, but I'd like to know whether others agree. My eldest son is 15 at present and I'd love to teach him to drive like my father did for me. -
KIA Pride (1991 - 2000) - 93 1.3 CV joint - MOT fail? 25 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Some time ago, I changed the CV boots. After a while, I noticed part of the circlip that holds the CV to the drive shaft poking out the new boot. I pulled out half a circlip! The drive shaft had a bit of float, but I assumed that as everything was bolted together no harm would happen. Would this fail an MOT, and if so, where on earth do I find a new circlip? -
FIAT 500 Abarth (2008 - - HJ Review 14 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I had to sell in the end, journeys were just too painful. The ride is terrible and it is such a poor drive. If you enjoy driving at all I would not touch the basic 500. (Infact the Panda is a much better choice) This Abarth sounds like all these issues are sorted and I cant wait for a test drive. I have always loved small Fiats and it seems theyve scored a winner with this one. -
Insurance - ethnic loading ?? 24 Sep 2008 (Forum)
In the same way that when we apply for insurance we are assessed on a multitude of factors ( postcode , job, car type, where parked, driving record ) , my observations based on 22 years driving experience tell me that foreign drivers , particularly from the 3rd world ARE worse drivers , do commit more traffic violations and drive badly - maintained vehicles, and are therefore a greater risk . -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.5td Warning Lights/Overvoltage? 25 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Hi, this is driving me nuts! Car was running fine then occasionally after first driving away, the ABS and Airbag warning lights would come on, ABS first. The tach will also drop to zero revs for a second or two then bounce back up. -

Driving on trade plates 28 May 2008 (Forum)
Just after he passed me he had to conduct an emergency braking manoeuvre to avoid running into a car that had moved into his lane. He then resumed his frantic pace down lane 3. Only then noticed that the car was driving on trade plates. Could n't help wondering how the owner (or prospective owner) would have viewed the way car was being treated. What are the rules for using trade plates? Do they just mean that the car is being driven under the garage's insurance or are there other implications? -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 00 2.0 HDi - Fuel Economy 9 May 2008 (Forum)
Hi All, My 306 is giving me approx. 190 miles from 20 litres of diesel with nothing but urban driving/short journeys, this equates to 42mpg. The problem is that i am getting the same mpg when i drive entirely on the motorway. Parkers/Peugeots figures state that i should be getting about 25% more when driving on the motorway. -
Driving Test: who has right of way? 22 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Daughter has failed her driving test for the third time!! The Examiner failed her for 'hesitation' because an oncoming driver signalled for her to pass a parked car on her side of the road by flashing his headlights and she waited. -
Khan cleared of dangerous driving 8 Jan 2008 (Forum)
He said it reached 0-60 in 7.2 seconds which was "just like an average car". Mr Khan, who denies dangerous driving, reached a top speed of 47mph as his BMW hit Mr Hatton, breaking his leg. Perhaps I do not understand what a high performance car is. The BMW site states:- base model 530i 6.2 secs and the 650i 5.2 secs for 0-62. -
Drive in 5th or 6th gear? 24 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Please disregard the effects of accelerating above 50MPH in 6th gear for this question as I know the car would be a bit 'flat' this low in the RPM range. I ask this question as I would drive in 6th at this speed unless lots of hills but some people are saying it's more economical to be in 5th at this speed due to peak torque. What's your thoughts? Thanks -
Good driving = happy commuter! 10 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Driving along my usual commute on the A1(m) which is basically two full lanes of cars doing 50-60, I was please to see the person behind me in the Toyota Avensis kept a gap similar to the one I had from the car in front of me. -
Terrano:Broken clutch after engaging 4WD 8 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Recently put my Terrano car in for service and on the test drive whilst driving the car after the service, the mechanic engaged the 4WD whilst the car was moving. The car then lost drive and they had to tow it back to the garage. On inspection the clutch had broken with the inner part having sheared off from the outer part. -
Driving someone else's car - insurance Q 31 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Friend is picking up a new car tomorrow. He is trading in two cars against the new one. My question is -- am I legally allowed to drive one of his cars to the dealers, to save him two trips? I have fully comp in my name with Direct Line. I rang to add his car to my insurance for a day, but friend's car is still insured in his name, so Direct Line would not add it to my policy (risk of double-claim, they say). -
Vibrating steering wheel on Fiesta 28 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Any ideas before i take it to the garage on Monday? -- Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-) -
extreme drink-drive case thread 19 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Given that the drink-drive case is either in the process of going to court, or started, then there is a possibility that discussing this matter on any public bulletin board could hold the author in contempt of court. What started out as a quite innocent question by the author, it has now expanded and his personal opinions have been expressed about the person as well. -
not knowing who was driving 13 Nov 2006 (Forum)
If drivers use the "I really couldn't say who was driving" ruse to try to avoid a scamera ticket, why don't the authorities just impound the car that was caught, and say "OK, we'll keep the car, until you come forward with a name, and tot up an £x a day bill for storage, which will be added to the fine. -
renew my car later in the year 22 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I've said in the past that shortly I would like to renew my later in the year for a New Vectra Estate 1.9td. But after watching Jeremny driving that VXR on Top Gear, I've had second thoughts. I know most will say we shall never have to drive like that. Which is true. But it worries me where I shall also tow a caravan and I don't want to worry about ploughing straight on with or without the van in bends or corners. -
Census 14 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Driving into this morning and home tonight I went past two laybys where the boys in blue were pulling in vehicles - signs coming up to the laybys said "Traffic Census". I can't recall seeing this before in 20 years of driving, so the question is what exactly is a traffic census? -
Driving abroad ? 3rd party only 19 Jun 2006 (Forum)
xml=/money/2006/06/17/cmtrav17.xml ) {Link repaired - DD} informed me of something I did not know about driving abroad. Many insurance companies issue Green Cards (usually for free), but you are only covered for 3rd Party claims only. You have to pay an extra premium to have comprehensive cover extended to go abroad.
