  • high hire car charges. 12 Apr 2012 (Forum)
The repair took 49days, mostly due to more damages found, which lead to waiting for verification from insurance company and parts import from Japan. Cut the story short. It has taken over 2 years and the 3 rd party company have made an offer. They are willing to pay for the damage repair, compensations, expenses and “some” of the hire car charges.
  • Honda Civic or Skoda Fabia - Fabia Estate ('08ish) or '05 Civic? can't decide 5 Oct 2010 (Forum)
I'm off to Henry Skoda in Glasgow tomorrow for a look around and maybe a test drive. Things that are important to me: relaibility, ergonomics, thoughtful design, safety. Current car is a 1997 Saab 9000, lovely car but getting old and expensive on fuel.(even though it burns LPG, it only gets 23mpg when doing so) Any thoughts welcomed.
  • Extreme central locking. 26 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I was ' head hunted ' last week for an important position with a car hire company in Yorkshire..a former colleague is the fleet manager. I performed my first duties yesterday. Basically, I had to go to Manchester Town Hall, collect some keys, go and find the car a mile or so away and return it to it's dedicated parking bay in a city centre street.
  • Moving to peak district - recommend 4x4? 23 Oct 2009 (Forum)
So - Would a 4X4 car be a good idea (we know we dont need an SUV - & cant afford one with a cheap running cost/fuel efficiency). OR as driving skills is probably most important, should we just invest in advance driver training & some winter tyres?! A car with ESP? If we want a fuel efficient ish car with 4X4 for £9k, we're tempted by Octavia Estate 4x4 - pretty good reviews & fuel efficiency.
  • Car for a learner 16 Jul 2009 (Forum)
She has about £1400 saved and would like to buy a car which I can register in my name and insure for all of the family, her included, to drive. As it would be my 2nd car I would have to start off a new insurance policy and thus it's important to buy a low insurance group car. Current front runners are Corsa 12v , Fiat Seicento and Micra (the latter very reluctantly as she sees it as a 'Grannies car' and is group 3) These are all in the lowest 2 insurance groups, depending on models.
  • Useless gadgets 15 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Eclipsing all this tat is the LED clock, proudly adorning the (mock walnut) gearknob of a schoolmate's 850 Mini (He had a Saturday job in a motor accessory store and unlimited scope for accessorising his car!) It had the all-important stopwatch with lap timer and even a tiny one millionth candlepower backlight. (The watch was only vaguely readable if the car was at rest and in second gear.) What were we like.....
  • Bangernomics - What are the rules of engagement? 4 Jun 2009 (Forum)
The rules I have in place are most have at least 6 months on its ticket, ideally be taxed and easy to sell on when I want to get rid of it. Reliability is really important to me, much more than the brand of car but I know beggers can;t be choosers at this end of the market. I also have a small child so I?d rather not have a mini sized car, focus/mondeo sized preferred.
  • Looked at Focus /Astra now thinking Mondeo/Vectra 15 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I was thinking of spending £3000 to £3500 and my primary wants are easy to find (not alot of time to spend), extras not important but wouldnt say no, either doesnt break down or is cheap to fix. My problem is that I am not very informed and I dont like that feeling. I am thinking diesel but can some/ all of you give me your top tip for example Where?
  • Vehicle inspections. 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
He did not mention this to the vendor, who would have changed the wheel, but went on counting stone chips and marks on the trim. The result was an examination that was virtually worthless. The brakes, perhaps the most important aspect of a vehicle were not tested at all. When I took the matter up with the inspection company they would not say why the vendor had not been informed about the tyre problem, but tried to say there was a coolant leak that also prevented the vehicle being road tested.
  • Daihatsu Sirion (1998 - 2005) - A month gone now 30 May 2008 (Forum)
My e mails were not answered and after a phone call a couple of weeks ago that I made, I was told it was still being imported from Japan. It is now nearly a month gone. I am paying higher insurance on car I do not have. I have transferred money from an interest account to a current account and so I have lost money by waiting?
  • Volkswagen Golf II (1983 - 1992) - 1992 1.8 driver with webber (relay trouble) 3 Mar 2008 (Forum)
If i remove the relay my revs seem to be ok, and no pulsing of headlights anymore. I'm just a bit worried that the relay may be important or that by removing it i am ignoring a more serious problem that is causing this in the first place. Just one more thing that might help. when i bought the car the guy told me that he had had a problem with pulsing headlights and that it was solved by fitting a new alternator ( actually not a whole alternator just a small part of it was replaced), not sure if this could shed any light on the problem i'm having, doesn;t really seem connected but i'm new to all this so i wouldn't know :) Any help would be much appreciated :) Thanks Neil
  • Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - Tyre Life 21 Oct 2007 (Forum)
The fronts were down to around 1.6/3/1.6 and 1.5/3/0 (yikes), but they have never been run under-inflated by more than 1-2 psi, so hopefully this wear pattern is normal, although the excessive wear on the outer right side of the drivers side tyre is a worry - there was not much tread on the outer 1cm or so of the tread pattern. The way it is driven is clearly important info - daily commute of 30 miles each way, 22 of which are motorway. No tyre squealing antics (it isn't that sort of car!), but the odd strong prod of the right pedal thru 2nd/3rd/4th when everything is pointing in the same direction.
  • Test drives - Availability of lengthy drives. 20 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I'm changing a Motability car, and I appreciate that I am probably not the "normal" profile of a Motability customer - I'm mid 30's, travel a lot (15,000 miles a year) and am pretty active, so it's not going to be a car to just do the shopping in. As once we get these cars we have to keep them for three years, it's important to me that I feel comfortable in it, as it's not unusual for me to do more than 4 hours at a time in the car. I've looked at a few different cars and the manufacturers attitudes have varied wildly.
  • Buying a facelift Omega Elite 21 May 2007 (Forum)
I don't do many miles and this will only reduce with my new job - around 150 to 200 miles maximum a week so efficiency is not that important. So the car I'm considering is a facelift (post 2000) Vauxhall Omega Elite with the 2.5 V6 petrol engine and an auto box. The car has all the bells and whistles (aircon, leather, auto box, nippy) I'd like plus I've always admired the subtle styling which in my opinion still looks 'new'.
  • show dogs transport- mpv or Van? 26 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I'm not exactly going to be accerlerating or cornering enthusiastiaclly with all the hounds in the back. Aircon to rear important. Removable seats & carpet so I can put in the cages is vital. More likely to exist with seats more or less permanently removed. Good residual would be nice. Not new-say £4-£7k. Thank you everyone.
  • Good quality bangers 29 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Every single one we looked at yesterday (there must have been 20 or 30) was either scratched to bits, rusty or had important trim missing. A passat estate was almost a goer but then I noticed some twonk had clearly stuck something heavy on the roof and had stoved in the sun roof and the rubber surround had rotted and disintegrated.
  • LHD HGV Danger 9 Mar 2006 (Forum)
This is important information for all road users. Recently my son was involved in an accident on the M6. He was side-swiped by a left-hand drive HGV as he was overtaking it at 70mph. His car was spun into the central barrier, bounced back into the left-hand barrier and then back into the middle lane.
  • What would you have done? 19 Dec 2005 (Forum)
The first police car appears in the distance... Well, in fact they were in a hurry and went the other way quickly, more important things to worry about. But if she HAD stopped, what the heck was I going to say? All very well saying "get names and numbers" but in those circumstances one just doesn't! Well, this one didn't anyway.
  • Mondeo Advice 26 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I currently have a 93 ZX TD which develops a new niggling fault every day of the week and that rubbish Laguna I just long to own a motor that is reliable and drives well and has reasonable crash protection, flash isn't important! Appreciate anyone who takes the time to reply, I know it's a long post.
  • Wrong place, wrong time! 23 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Traffic trundling along at 20-25, me in my Transit, MGF behind, police traffic car in front. Guy in the MGF decides he's far too important to wait, exits into service road and screams down it at about 60 to try and beat the traffic at the next side road. Policeman shakes his head and watches as the MGF speeds along with driver busy watching the gap in the main road traffic he's aiming for.
