  Is there any way of attaching a roof box to a car which does not have roof rails or 'gutters' in which, in the old days, the feet of a roof box frame could stand? It is a Mercedes that I am interested in but as many cars don't have rails and none have gutters the question has a broader application.

  I will require some new tyres soon but have a concern regarding the best place to jack the car up via a trolley jack, when you see the tyre fitters in action they don't appear to give it a lot of thought but i have heard stories of underbody damage.The main dealers are unhelpful.   Probably a long shot. Looking for a used petrol car for a 20yr old driver. As she does some motorway driving she would prefer a 1.4 unless someone can suggest a powerful enough 1.2 ( she has been on our insurance as a named driver on 3 different cars even a used golf gti so she's a very good driver )

  I am starting a new job that will involve driving 100 motorway miles a day. I need to buy a new car that is economical, suitable for motorways and that my recently passed 18 year old can drive without me having to sell a kidney to insure. My budget is about £3500 I was thinking possibly a Toyota Aygo but I would be grateful for any recommendations as I know very little about small cars.

  Just driving to work this morning and I overtook a Y reg 1983? Ford Escort that seemed completely fine. Just started to make me wonder why we see less older cars on the roads today bearing in mind that cars rust less, engines can do 100k plus miles and break down less frequently. I am suprised. nowadays to see anything over 15 years old...

  I'm thinking about replacing my four year old Skoda Fabia. I'd like a city car/hatchback that is big enough for a child, is fun to drive and pretty reliable. I was contemplating a VW Golf but am put off by the price and reliability issues. Most people I speak to say I should go for a Japanese car.

  I now share a lift with 4 other people we drive one day each. My bmw 4 series only has 4 seats so it looks like getting a different car. Can anyone reccommend a suitable car? The only one I like is the old shape Jag XJ tdvi possibly a 2007 shape but I'm not too sure what the reliability is like.

  Hello - I'm looking for a new car. I currently have a banged up old civic and am now looking at a Hyundai i40. Having never owned or driven a Hyundai, my question is are these cars any good? I have noticed they are very common as private hire taxi drivers in Glasgow and a couple have told me they are far better and more reliable than their precious skodas.

  Hi I don't have remote central locking. I have just had a new key made for my car as the old one snapped. They key turns the ignition and can lock the car, but not unlock. I will take the key back tomorrow but just wondering if anyone had any ideas? It would be really inconvenient if I can't get in untill tomorrow.

  I have a 5 year old mondeo 1.8 TDCI which has only done 80k miles and has a cracked piston. To repair it by putting in a new engine would be £4500, and a second hand engine would be about £1000 cheaper! Basically this car is scrap as the cost to repair is more than the car is worth!

  Every time I have tried to buy a secondhand car (usually c.3-4 years old) my attempts to get a better deal have failed miserably. The advertized price is the price - no flexibility at all. This seems to be very different from buying new cars where there seems to be no fixed prices at all.

  Cos, at least if purchasing from the franchised network fresh second hand cars appear to be as dear as poison, mind ...................when I trawled the Autotrader site it was no better as all the fresh cars  still appear to be within the dealer network. Or am I just gettin old and miserly.

  Interesting article on the right under news regarding average model mileage breakdown by WarrantyDirect. The example in the article is a four year old Micra with 30k on the clock. You may be tempted to pay a bit extra as, using the 12k per annum average, it does appear lower than average mileage. However, for the specific car it is an average mileage so you could end up paying more for an average mileage for model car.

  Driving through Crawley this lunchtime, saw one of these little electric cars (the sort usually driven by old ladies along the pavement). This was being driven by a man but along the road, even though there was a pavement available. He just trundled on as though he was a miniature car.

  We want something reliable after a couple of years of garage bills with my 17yr old MINI.
