Mobilo experience 15 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The chap took the car details & suggested it was better covered under the Mercedes Mobilo scheme than ApprovedWarranty - better benefits/provision etc 13:15pm The initial technician/mechanic arrived at premises about 25mins. after my call & quickly confirmed only solution was flat-bed to main dealer (about 40 miles distant) - he called up a suitable vehicle, which arrived about.... 13:45pm The car was in my garage & (being auto) left in 'park', this posed a bit of a problem as it meant the 'handbrake' was effectively on. After hitching car via tow-hook & using wooden blocks under the rear wheels to 'slip' the car backwards, it was loaded by about... 14:25pm Then taken to the dealership. Meanwhile, Mobilo rang a national car rental firm to arrange a replacement car., who then rang me to confirm status/driving licence details & get CC number. -
Renault's Timing Belt Recommendations 4 Nov 2006 (Forum)
The AA are called and they are unable to get it started but he says it sound like the timing belt, so we are towed home. Puts car into the renault garage, where it has been serviced for the last 2 and a half years. (car bought second hand). Then told the timing belt has gone and it has caused £1,500 worth of damage to the engine. -
Return from Val D'Isere 2 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Incidentally, this was one unlucky little motor car, leaving aside the horrible "enamel mustard" paint job. In the space of a week it pickled up a parking ticket, got towed away and got shunted in a car park by some Christian soul's 4x4 (tell tale bumper height), the driver of which naturally did not delay him or herself to leave details. (Second time a 4x4 has done that to me actually. -
406 Cambelt Gone - worth repairing? 10 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Engine light comes on the dashboard, flickers once and stays on. (The "K" light). I hoped it was ECU or fuel pump.. Towed to Garage by Mr Boarhunt. He said "compression sounds like it's gone, 98% sure it's timing belt. I've been doing this for 16 years, buy a japanese model instead - only been to one in last 6 months (and it was a flat battery)" (This has been heavily discussed in other threads I know - just giving my tuppence worth) My possible courses of action: a. get Cam changed (£200)- sound a bit steep - 3.5h@£35 p.h. -
interesting sat telegraph this week 11 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Interesting motoring section in this weeks Saturday telegraph, interesting to see the Transport Research Group Director not towing the government line. Gatso's are nonsense But so is the wider way the roads are policed We should not just be knocking the government?s crazy way of running the transport system, we should also start listing some of the obvious positive suggestions to make things better For instance (off the top of my head) - less bans, more retraining, retests, e.g. court tells you to take X hours of driver training in the next 2 months and pass a retest in the next 4 months - is much more likely to improve the driver than a ban - start attacking really dangerous behaviour (e.g. double parking outside schools, parking on crossing zig zags (unless there? -
Looking for SUV suggestions 4 Sep 2024 (Forum)
I had a 07 suzuki vitara which got written off for unrelated reasons, and handled that hill with ease (even towed the volvo up it a few times on ice). I'm mostly driving on tarmac, but want something that can handle occasional off road. I work from home so yearly mileage is quite low, probably sub 10,000km. -
Audi Q2 - Audi Q2 clutch failure & left on suspension blocks 14 Feb 2022 (Forum)
Unfortunately after a few weeks of a gluey feeling with gear changes and also a weird burning smell, the clutch completely failed last week and the car was towed to our nearest Audi dealership for diagnostics. Yesterday we received a call that the mechanics had investigated and a new clutch flywheel etc is all required at just over £2600. On top of this they discovered the suspension blocks had been left on the front car causing potential engine damage and have quoted a further £1100 to fix it. -
MB C200 estate - Cost of an oil change... 4 Aug 2017 (Forum)
So I want to keep the car and given that it has 15500 mile service intervals and given that I do a bit of caravan towing I thought I'd have the oil and oil filter changed half way through the service interval at 7750 miles - Honest John recommends this too. First call to MB (Sytner) of MIlton Keynes. I get the car booked in before the helpful girl tells me the cost. -
2011 Nissan X Trail Tekna - Nissan HDD system, Sat Nav unfit for purpose 12 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Please have a look at he forum, especially as their advert says ‘always know where you are’, and that is a lie. The kit has sent me towing a 24ft caravan over Snowdonia to get to Anglesey, which was scary. I have recorded the other issues in the forum. This ‘pup’ may end up killing someone. 1.2 TSI vs 1.6 CR 105 - Skoda Fabia - advice to a colleague 6 Aug 2012 (Forum)
Her best mate told me all this (another colleague) and I said - right car (she has a dog and needs storage for camping and to tow a trailer) but totally the wrong engine. The colleague in question had a chat to me today and I explained that with her annual mileage and the type of driving (mainly through town with the odd motorway jaunt) haivng a diesel would be totally unsuitable. -
Citroen C5 - Compensation for faulty car 13 Jun 2011 (Forum)
After that it showed ‘oil pressure low stop’, so I stopped immediately. The car was then towed to the garage who said that it was outside their warranty scope of 3 months / 3000 miles – although it was still within the three month period, I had driven 3800miles! I feel that the turbo charger and engine of the car should not have failed at 70,000 miles and their suggestion that the engine needed to be replaced leads me to believe that the vehicle was not of satisfactory quality, as laid down by the law. -
Ford Mondeo - Mondeo 2003 2.0 TDCI fuel problem, 2 May 2011 (Forum)
i managed to get the car towed back to a yard and take off what was a suspected fuel filter problem then put a air hose through it to clean it out, replaced this and tried to get the car running. no joy as the fuel looks to not being pulled through. -

5 seater + luggage plus luxuy - but under 15 foot 15 Feb 2010 (Forum)
On looking at 5 seaters, even some quite big ones, it is clear that the centre seat in the back is not suitable for a long comfortable place to be, knowing that Mrs G misses terribly the Merc CLK (for occasions when children are not in tow) and that the Merc C Class is mechanically siimilar, I am suggesting a C Class estate. Budget of £10 - £12k should get us a tidy example od a 200CDi. We have both seen merc B classes and the "format" looks appealing, plenty of space for 5, Merc levels of refinement, except reading http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm? -
Confession; I was a git today. 12 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Every month or two, the red Polo has alarmed one or other of the family; she's had my son off his bike through not paying attention; she's failed to see me on my bike a few times; she's turned the normally calm Mrs H into a venomous witch and she' s whacked my door mirror after parking too close before Christmas. Today, I was towing the trailer, preparing to turn left into the main road when along comes Mrs Polo at some unfeasible speed turning right into the lane, cutting the corner and ignoring the road markings. She's so far over on my side of the lane, she hasn't cleared the main road and she's lost the opportunity to turn wide and wait offside to offside next to me while I turn onto the main road. -
Land Rover Discovery Sport - Land Rover Engine failed suddenly 26 Sep 2022 (Forum)
We have booked a job with UK RAC and they picked up the car on exiting the Euro tunnel in UK. On the advice of the RAC Recovery Technician it was towed to a reputable garage local to us. This garage has investigated and has advised that there was an issue with the timing chain. On the day they were moving the car to start repairing the timing chain issue, the engine failed. -
Ford Kuga Titanium X - Where do i stand legally 11 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Now they've told me that they have found another Titanium X.This 1 is a manual.Mines an automatic. Its of the same year. With 5000 miles less. But it also doesnt have a tow bar.Again mine does(This apparantly was a £400 optional extra. But it was pointed out to me.And it was part of reason i brought the car. Now this other Titanium X they've valued at £12250.Mine at the start was £13000.They gave me £500 for a px.And i paid the £12500 cash.I was also told that most cars depreciate by about £2000 in a year. Now i've only had mine less than 6 months. And they valued my car at now £10000.I dont know where they get their sums from.As that means that my car has gone down by £2500 in less than 6 months Now i've been told that at first they wanted or expected me to pay an additional £1000 towards the replacement.I refused. As i dont think i should be paying anything. As i have been sold a defective vehicle. It now stands at the moment that i'm waiting for the replacement car to come in to them. And i'll be sent some pictures of it.They now want me to pay £400 towards the car. -
Nissan X-Trail 2.2Di Sport - Intermittent Power Loss / Surges - Fuel air leak?? 31 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Whilst the engine always starts first time and idles smoothly, intermittently and when under load, i.e. accelerating up hill or towing, it will loose power in 3rd or 4th gear requiring a premature change down to 2nd in order to maintain progress. If I leave it in 3rd or 4th the power will intermittently surge. The problem I’m sure is down to fuel starvation caused by air in the fuel system that wasn't there before the filter change. -
No Fault Accident - Helphire (Albany) 8 May 2013 (Forum)
I had to sign a 'no fee' credit agreement to pay any costs that may arise out of the claim and to cover me, should any issues arise (I should have smelt a rat). I am covered by this agreement only If I tow the line and accept to follow their advice, otherwise I would be liable for all my costs. This is a basic timeline of events 1. Dec 2011 - Hire car supplied and repairs done to my vehicle. -
Parking: Politeness, morality and the law 30 May 2012 (Forum)
Tone was less imperious than the lady from spot 1, but the message was: you are not allowed to park here and if you do I will call the police / council and get you towed away. He tried to persuade me that it was a private road. It's not, so he backed down to "residential road", however the threat of police calling remained, so today I'm up on the kerb elsewhere again.
