  • Australian Speeding Tickets 21 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Just got back from a holiday in Oz and 2 speeding tickets have now arrived from Queensland police. One from a mobile camera and the other from a Gatso. Neither picture they have sent shows who is driving and there were 2 authorised drivers in the hire car. How do I stand if I ignore these? I don't intend to visit Oz again but I don't know what action they may take in UK if I don't pay.
  • personal regs spacing 13 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I know DVLA make money on selling but it appears lack of traffic police means they can get away with murder. ALSO really dirty rear plates (presumably to avoid speed cameras identification). Is this a police matter THANKS
  • What are the police for? 1 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Road reduced to one lane for maybe 200 metres, but with a curve so you couldn't see the other end of the restriction. Traffic lights there but not working. Speed camera van at one end. Question: where were the two police officers I saw? Were they (a) sitting in the van or (b) one at each end of the restriction, directing traffic to ensure no accidents? Am I cynical, or just old enough to remember when the police accepted their first duty was to the public?
  • Remove HGV Governors? Err, no thanks HJ! 11 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I see in Saturday's Telegraph HJ is advocating removing governors from HGVs. I know he's anti speed-hump (mmm...) and anti speed cameras (getting dafter) - but has he taken leave of his senses completely? I don't want to be on wet roads with 40 ton artics jack-knifing at 90mph - we waste enough time in HGV-instigated hold-ups on the A14 as it is!
  • tom tom no no 16 May 2006 (Forum)
Do I need street maps of USA if I'm never going to drive there. Are they as good as they say with hands free phones? If I have a satnav with speed camera capability will the gendarmes fine me? Is the ONE level OK or should I go for the latest version
  • Please help me! 10 Mar 2006 (Forum)
However, a police van pulled out of a nearby junction and pulled over to the other side of the road, think he may have ben checking licsence plate. Does this mean i will get fined? or would they have to have caught me on camera? Please help, very anxious as i have NEVER done anything like this before!
  • Making a monkey of the diesel myth 29 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Interesting article in the weekend press where the fuel economy of a 1.1 litre petrol Citroen C1 was compared with a 1.4HDI diesel C1 on a complete lap of the M25 at 50 mph (traffic & cameras permitting). Contrary to expectations the the diesel car achieved 82.7 mpg at a cost of £6.37, whilst the petrol engined motor returned a remarkable 85.5 mpg at a cost of £6.10. So the most economical car tested to date is a petrol, which has beaten not only diesel but all current hybrids as well.!!!!
  • Discussion: Best & Worst Film Car Chases 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Thought it would be intersting to hear everyone's views on what is the best and worst car chase they have seen in a film. Best: Ronin - through the streets in Paris (I think) - both the actual camera work, the stunts and the length of the chase make this my favourite. Worst: Fled (Laurence Fisbourne & Stephen Baldwin) - two guys on Ducati 916's not being able to outrun a big old cadillac or something similar - not exactly realistic.
  • Road Angel & Installation 2 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Just bought one of these devices owing to frequent encounters with cameras.Excellent at highlighting local blackspots, North Derbyshire, where I have indeed seen several accidents in recent times.Local fixed cameras all highlighted as well. I'll want to make the installation neater in due course. Car is a 2001 Passat- anyone had experience of concealing a power cable? I'm hoping that there is a gap between the dashboard and windscreen to feed the cable to the steering column area where hopefuly there will be a suitable power source.
  • A suggestion! 10 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Or for just occasionally declared open days on certain stretches of road, when we could have a blast and you lot could go another way, or stay home? (The nice police could give us the probably very flattering camera readings!) Goodness knows we pay enough.

  • Speeding (mostly excl cameras) XVIII 12 Jul 2004 (Forum)
The various speed cameras and speeding threads shed much heat, but also a little light amongst the smoke. One consistent theme that emerges is demand for higher speeds on motorways, so I thought out might be interesting to explore an area where there might be room for agreement.
  • What used saloon do you suggest I buy? 16 Mar 2020 (Ask HJ)

  • Windscreen replacement on a modern car 15 Jan 2019 (Forum)
As for the re-calibration, this seemed to require a technician to drive the car for 20 mins, during which time it must go above 40mph. But some windscreen companies, including Autoglass, say this is not neccessary, simply aim the camera at a static target. Where it gets a bit murky though, is that for this method to work properly, apparently the tyre pressures and wheel alignment need to be spot on, and the car needs to be on a smooth flat and level surface.
