  • Ford S-MAX (2006 - ) - petrol or diesel? 25 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Our annual mileage in the vehicle will be around 15k, short journeys urban in the week, with regular long stints on the motorway at the weekends. We also have to tow our 1325kg caravan about 10 times a year. We have had diesels for a while, but with all the DPF, DMF etc debate I'm not sure it's worth it. In the S-Max, the 2.0 diesel would suffice but I would really like the 2.2 for a bit more shove especially towing.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace (1998 - 2010) - 04 1.9D Cam belt 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)
However, friends in the motor trade tell me that I should pursue the matter on the grounds that the car is not fit for purpose and the cambelt should not fail after 17K. At present the car is at a small garage where it was towed to as the main dealer was closed by the time I got home. They have confirmed the diagnosis as best they can without stripping it down. Can anyone advise me as to the best course of action? The vehicle will need towing again to get it to the main dealer.
  • Starting a flooded engine! 24 Mar 2008 (Forum)
The engine turns smoothly, but does not fire at all. Any other suggestions, before I have to get the car towed off again! Thanks "One of my readers has written to Charles Moore, editor of The Daily Telegraph, trying to get me fired for the advice I gave about this. But there are a couple of ways to get a flooded catalysed car started.
  • Replacement for Merc w124 Estate? 10 Jan 2007 (Forum)
My wife will only drive an auto, and likes that you can see all the corners of the merc and it is narrow. I need it to tow the small trailer with a very very light sports car on it (my 230 te has an extra auto box cooler). It needs to be happy going long distances with lots (ish) of kit. I love the quietness of the 230 and its quality feel even now it is old.
  • Tuning Diesel Methods (How ?)& Insurance 31 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Generally town driving, but some , longer trips to holiday home in N. Wales, and also possily towing a large caravan maybe just onvce a year - so real mix of uses, and quite like a car that has plenty of low-down grunt and not having to work the gears !!!!
  • Hyundai i40 - Gear Linkage Issue 24 Jun 2022 (Forum)

  • Hyundai Santa Fe - Cost of owenership 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
The all-in costs for service, repairs (brake pads & discs at 60K), tyres (a set of Michelins at 41K) and depreciation have been £257 per month of ownership. Could have been worse. Had a good dealer too. Great car, used for towing and you could drive all day and still get out at the end able to move (I'm not in the first flush of youth let's say!).
  • All makes - Fold up cycles 27 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Realised that taking bikes on a carrier for a trip out or a weekend away just isn't working. Firstly with no tow bar it means fiddling with straps etc and anxious moments looking in the rear view mirror to see if a Raleigh Tourer has been dropped in the carriageway. Then finding a safe place to store the bike at the hotel.

  • VW Golf GTI Mk VI - No compression means new engine..? 16 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Our 2010 Golf GTI (c72k miles) failed to start on Monday - previously extremely reliable.  It was towed to a VW dealer who eventually advises that there is no compression on any cylinder and is unsure what may have caused the problem - maybe timing belt?  He advises it may well be that the only solution is a new engine.
  • Mondeo - Auto vs manual mondeo 30 Jul 2014 (Forum)
I am thinking of buying a Mondeo as I have read that it is good for towing small caravans.  I have a small two berth caravan weighing approx 750 KG.  My budget is limited to  £2000 and so I will be looking in the 75000 to 110000 mile range.  Now I am not bothered about the engines as such as I'm looking for the diesel version but I am very concerned about clutch/DMF failure and so I was wondering if an automatic Mondeo diesel would be the way to go as I've heard that they don't have a dual mass flywheel.
  • Ford Mondeo Estate or Vauxhall Vectra - Diesel Estate which one? 3 Mar 2014 (Forum)
At the moment I have a 1999 1.8 petrol Ford Focus Estate. I do in the region of 22000 miles per year of which there is quite a few towing miles. I think I can save around £700 to £1000 in fuel per year, if I get a diesel estate. I have got it down to 2 and it is either a Mondeo or Vectra. My budget is somewhere between £1500/£2000 which has me looking at a 2005/2004 model.
