Peugeot 206 1.9 d - idle speed? 5 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Mine is strange, some days it idles at 1100rpm, some days 750rpm, some days 800rpm some even at 500rpm. its just i do a lot of motorway miles and the higher it idles the higher the revs at 70mph and the more fuel it uses. i would like it to idle at 500rpm ALL the time as it does 135miles for £10 of diesel :) thanks in advance -
Kia Sportage / Hyundai Tucson advice please 2 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I am considering buying either Kia Sportage / Hyundai Tucson (new or upto a couple of years old) with the diesel engine option. Does anyone know if they have any major faults? I believe that the common rail fuel system is from Bosch. Does anyone know if it has a DPF (it is Euro IV)? I believe that the camshafts are chain driven. -
Vauxhall Signum (2003 - ) - 03 2.2 ECU fault light 21 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I have a 2.2 diesel signum, the ECU fault light keeps coming on and putting the car into safe mode, the vacuum pump was changed, and fault was still apparent, i have now changed the airflow meter, and still getting the same fault with lots of black smoke from the exhaust, I have now put some injector cleaner in with the fuel what can I do next. -
Engine fouls own nest - `food` goes into wrong end 29 Oct 2008 (Forum)
During re-generation,with particulate filter equipped diesels, do injectors really blast fuel into the cylinders on the exhaust stroke, wetting bores and contaminating oil? Or is there a separate injector just upstream of the DPF? Is there a better engineering solution to cleaning a particulate filter? -
BMW X5 E53 SUV (2000 - 2007) - X5 3.0D + fill of unleaded! Here's your bill sir! 28 Feb 2008 (Forum)
A family member recently filled up their X5 diesel with unleaded and drove it several miles before realising their mistake. The car was towed to the local BMW dealer and the fuel system replaced. Guess how much the final bill was? I was surprised to hear that the insurance company coughed for it as it was considered an acccident - just as well! -
4 x 4 options 31 Mar 2007 (Forum)
After weighing up options suggested in my previous discussion on what vehicle to tow a one horse trailer and horse, I am now in a quandary as to what 4x4 diesel to buy. I want the smallest vehicle capable of towing a minimum of 1500kg, with the most economical fuel consumption, as I clock up a fair mileage. I have had conflicting reports about the Landrover Freelander, any feedback welcome! -
Peugeot 406 HDi Misfire Smoking 18 Jan 2007 (Forum)
First thing in the morning car starts immediately on all four but within about 10/15 seconds tickover becomes lumpy and it's start's to smoke badly (grey/white) and smells of unburnt diesel, once it becomes warmer ther is a pinking noise reving from tickover to 2,000/2,500 revs, and continues to smoke horrendous, compression's are all 400. It's as though it's flooding with fuel.?120,000 miles f.s.h. -
filling up 15 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Am i better off , doing as I currently do , fill up, drive 550 miles then when near empty fill up again, or fill half tank do 200 miles and then fill up - which is most economical. Finally why are the pumps so slow to dispense the fuel, the lorry diesel pumps are fine, obviously quicker, but why are normal pumps so slow -
Biodiesel 12 Oct 2006 (Forum)
My concern is how do we know if our vehicles are compatible for biodiesel and is there any need for different fuel filters. Can somebody please help us? Batgirl303 -
Mondeo TDCi - stupid question 13 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Something I should probably already know the answer too but.... I seem to remember being told when I started driving that you should never let a diesel run out of fuel - and that it would need a mechanic to bleed it (air?) to restart. Was this true and is this still the case on modern cars such as the Mondy. I might be running the tank a bit lower than usual if the panic buying goes on all week - but don't fancy an AA call. -
mercedes endurance record 26 Jul 2005 (Forum)
In one of the papers today there is a Mercedes advert. It desribes how an E-class equppied with the new 3.0 V6 diesel did 100 000 miles in 30 days running "day and night". By my maths that's 3333.33r miles per day, or an average of 138 miles per hour. Considering time for new drivers and fuel it must have been going faster. -
VAG 1.9Tdi or 2.0Tdi? 3 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Is the 2 litre worth the £1000 premium it demands on the A3? Fuel consumption appears to be similar, does anyone have any experience of these engines? Thanks. -
White (or any other colour) van man 16 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Why do most van drivers insist on accelerating to the rev limiter before changing gear? Not only is it excessively noisy to do so and bad for fuel economy, it also slows the rate of acceleration as diesel engines benefit from earlier up shifts. Also why are they all in their early thirties, stocky build and read The Sun? ;-) PS: I am not knocking Sun readers, that is what I read most days! -
Mazda CX-5 - Petrol or Diesel for city & occasional long haul 29 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Also am a bit confused about tax costs - both models list as £30 but I read elsewhere this changed in 2017 & diesels now attract £140 tax minimum? Really don't know what to do. Worried about the overall fuel efficiency and possible DPF problems. Advice much appreciated! -
Owning a diesel auto - how it feels? 22 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I have always owned petrol and manual cars so far. Now thinking of buying a diesel auto as my next car. I have driven auto/diesel occassionally though (hire car etc). Not decided on specific car yet, but Kia Cee'd seems to be a good candidate (AFAIK, it is a normal auto - not DSG) Other than remembering to fill correct fuel in the car, what other things I need to do differently compared to manual/petrol cars? -
Diesel variability 25 May 2006 (Forum)
I've owned various petrol cars over the years, and not once noticed any difference in performance no matter what fuel I put in. Now I've got a diesel, it seems to make a huge difference. I tried BP Ultimate when I lived near an outlet, and it gave loads of extra power below 1600 rpm, and made the car pull much more strongly. -
Mazda 6 diesel - Mistake, or not? 1 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Question being about the advisability of buying a new diesel. Apparently it conforms to Euro 6 emissions, whatever the Hell that is, and he doesn't give a flying flea about the current downer that the car buying public seem to have on diesels. My worry is that for political reasons there will be further sanctions levied on the drivers of diesels to include even the newest and least polluting examples. -
ford focus - Particles, Catalitic converters, DPF's, Diesel??? 9 Jul 2011 (Forum)
They come in all sizes from PM1's upwards. It seems that the Eu has picked on PM10's as they are the most common size produced by diesels and what triggered that I imagine was someone seeing an old diesel engine under load pumping out clouds of black smoke. The good point of Pm10's is that they are large enough to be caught. -
Another what car to get 4 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Hi I've need to change my pug 308 HDI simply due to general maintenance becoming ever more frequent due to age and mileage I've never had a problem with the car or any of my previous HDI engined Peugeot's so was thinking about getting a 2 year old 308 with the 120 diesel or the now obsolete 2 litre diesel 2016 on avensis although seems to be impossible to get an avensis in decent condition as all ex hire etc I commute all motorway 75 miles a day and every three months roughly take the car to Europe to top up the wine and beers :) Now you've heard this a million times- petrol or diesel especially given fact that France is looking to ban diesel altogether and given that I'm in France half a dozen times a year this is worrying. -
2005 vectra 3.0cdti - 2005 vauxhall vectra 3.0 cdti Sri diesel keeps cut 22 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I called AA out yesterday as it wouldnt start first thing then it did. Anyway the car called up no faults what's so ever. He then took alook at the diesel filter and said there is slight bits of metal laying in the bottom of the filter housing and recommend taken the car to a garage. Any way when he went I bought new diesel filter and cleaned out filter housing and replaced with new filter and seals.
