  The old ‘R65’ transmission was co-developed with PSA and Rover’s share of the intellectual property was kept by BMW to use in the new MINI, so MG Rover was buying in gearboxes at an inflated price. Its procurement department brokered a better deal from Ford, so some hasty reengineering was carried out and from MY2003 onwards, the 45 got the slick-shifting five-speeder from the Ford Focus - another car that was renowned for being great to drive.  So while the interior was clearly more Travelodge than The Ritz, with Formica-style dashboard inserts that looked like the bar in a working man’s club and a nasty aftermarket stereo, beyond that the 45 was way more than the sum of its parts.

  The all-British team face fierce competition from John Abel and Leigh Powley in the 1937 Lagonda LG45, who were compensated for their second place with their own set of Alpine Cups, and Peter Lovett and Rob Henchoz in the 1937 BMW 328, who had to settle for third place. Alpine Cups were also awarded to Clint and Brad Smith in the 1938 Jaguar SS100, and Paul Wignall and Guy Woodcock in the 1929 Alvis Silver Eagle. Spirit of the rally winner was the crew of this 1936 Jawa Aero Minor 1.

  Skoda came out on top with 77 problems per 100 cars, while at the bottom is Chevrolet with a whopping 288. BMW is the worst ranked premium manufacturer, and third-bottom overall with 196 problems. In contrast, Mercedes-Benz tops the premium charts, with 88 problems. SEAT and Peugeot both have 99 problems – and a glitch is one.
