• Loss of Coolant 22 Sep 2001 (Forum)
  It has provided 5 years of excellent service. However during the past year it has started loosing coolant. I have to top it up about every 2 months. The rate of loss has suddenly increased during the last few weeks, to the point when the coolant light comes on, it now needs topping up about every 80 miles (the light will start to flash from this point) .

  hi guys firstly the head gasket has been done with mls gasket ages ago with cam belt and bolt kit ect ect and has ran fine since over 30k ago,any way the other day i thought i would do a coolant change with all the rocomended coolant i.e oat long life coolant (the red colour stuf).at first after i done the change i suspected a air lock so i bled the system as recomended ran it with blowers on hot and then finaly i started gettin heat through the blowers,its been fine all week then today i noticed the coolant fan cme on when driving about 2 mins after starting the engine then went of 2 seconds after turning engine of.it has been doing this all day and nite,the temp gauge never moves above half way(normal reading as always)ive checked pipes ther all hot and the watter seems to be circulating through the header tank fine small hose at the top, the car was fine before i did the coolant change any advise would be great thanks.ps no coolant loss of  leaks but obviously the problem has accurd since the change,wish i never started.thanks again

  Looking for some help and recommendations. The story so far... Started off with huge amounts of pressure in the coolant when cold. When I would undo the coolant cap, when cold, a huge rush of air would escape and cause the coolant to drop. Also had dark discolored coolant with soot particles. Took it to Dees Of Wimbledon Ford Dealer, and they (without investigation) said I need new engine for £8,000,told them to stick it.

  Slowly lost around 3 pints of coolant from my 100ps Passat over the past 6000 miles or so. 89,000 miles total. No visible oil in coolant or vice versa. Almost impossible to see much else but no obvious leaks or overheating. Is it a 'please take my credit card' job or can I check more myself?

  The car never overheated, and the most I had to top the expansion bottle at any one time was about a quarter litre. On checking recently I have noticed air bubbles in on the coolant, quite a froth sometimes. Coolant level remains constant, as does oil level and there is no sign of cross contamination. Head gasket on the way, or perhaps something simple? (and cheap!) Thoughts appreciated.

  Apologies for my ignorance. Car is eight years old over 100k. If fill the coolant level up via the expansion tank and you overfill, I assume that the excess will drain out and via the overflow pipe when the car gets going. Now the question I have is. 1. If you over fill your coolant, will this cause any damage to any engine parts, gaskets etc, whilst the excess is draining off?

  Do I need to use the recomended Skoda coolant when doing a complete change? or is this the usual "trying to get you to use the main dealer stuff". Also is it an easy job?

  It's time to change the coolant on my 95 ZX Volcane TD. I've heard it can be a pig of a job to get rid of air locks. Anyone got any handy hints? The wife's Xsara (same 1.9TD) also needs doing.

  A recovery truck came and the guy topped up the coolant and bled through using the pipe in front of the engine. He found the cap for the coolant also. He got the engine working again and we carried on the journey. I did 150 miles then checked coolant and topped up again.

  My thermostat is sticking open on the motorway and the engine temp is dropping on longer journeys so I'm looking at replacing it. I've always been a bit mystified when it comes to coolant systems and been wary of messing with them. It has green coolant in at the moment, to replace the thermostat, I was going to drain the system first and then its just 3 bolts and a hose clip to take out the housing and thermostat.

  Hi all,  I have a coolant leak. It is actually leaking from underneath the car when the car is hot. The drops of water /coolant are dripping from the aluminium exhaust surround (heat guard whatever) on the passenger side of the car towards the front, so basically somewhere inbetween the handbrake and the middle of the passenger seat, but underneath.

  The coolant light on my 2005 Passat TDI has come on twice in a month. The water does appear to be going down but there is no apparent leak under the card. Any ideas ?.

  I've got a bucket of old coolant from the car, I've seen the oil tank at our council waste disposal site but I've never seen anything about old anti-freeze. What's the best way to get rid of it, that doesn't involve drains or an empty field?

  I remember, in a previous posting, someone mentioned that carbon monoxide detected in the coolant header tank vapours was a sure-fire indicator of a leaky head gasket. Can anyone tell me what this detector is, and where I can get it from? Thanks in advance.
• Ford Focus - Foamy Dark Yellow Coolant 19 May 2010 (Forum)
  Hi All, Had a look under the bonnet of my other half's 2001/Y MK1 TDDi Focus to see that coolant had been spraying out from the pressure cap. The coolant is foamy and a dark yellow colour, and has stayed that way once cooled down. There's a layer of foam with coolant liquid underneath in the expansion tank.
