  • Chirruping noise on starting Saab 9-3 17 Jun 2005 (Forum)
My 1998 Saab 9-3 2.0l non turbo has developed a strange chirrup/high pitched squeak when starting which vanishes after approx. one second. The timing chains are quiet, it runs with 10w40 semi-synthetic oil and a Saab oil filter. It has only done 72000 miles and is used for a 30 mile round trip every couple of days - no short runs at all. The noise seems to be coming from directly underneath the rocker cover at the end where the sprocket to drive the front camshaft is.
  • vectra engine management light 4 May 2005 (Forum)
i have a 95 vauxhall vectra 1.8i the engine management light keeps coming on every 2-3 days (3 times yesterday) with loss of power (and being overtaken by OAPs) ive done the paperclip test and its not showing up any logged faults with the engine running. without the engine running it shows up 0335(cranshaft sensor) which ive heard is normal and shows ive got my paperclip in the right place. does this intermitant fault mean something is about to die?
  • Cars and movies 28 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Everyone knows how cool this movie made the Alfa Romeo Spider but, can anyone, without reference to the DVD, remember how far Benjamin had to run to the church after running out of gas? I?ll give the answer tomorrow if a) I remember the answer or b) I remember posting the question. Cheers, Dave.
  • Abstruse Insurance Question 23 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Dear all, I've just bought a different car, and have run into a little problem in insuring it. My current policy has 3 months to run, but the underwriter will not insure the new car - something to do with them only doing diesels or Rovers or something, rather than my driving record.
  • Advice about broken 1988 volvo Automatic 10 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I have a 1988 Volvo Automatic 2.3 Estate which has been with my mechanic (who I have known for over 30 years) since the beginning of February because it keeps stalling. He has done everything to get it running including change two petrol pumps, renewed the distributor and wiring etc. There is a good flow of petrol and a good spark but it will not run for more than a minute. We are at our wits end. Please can you help?

  • Help! Battery or Alternator? 13 Aug 2003 (Forum)
The mechanic tested it to find that the alternator wasn't functioning. So we replaced it and it was then running fine. Two days ago the same thing happend, again we had it tested to find this time it was the battery and again this was replaced. We then took the car for a run and with lights, wipers and fan on found the battery to be draining yet again?

  • Thermostat - How important? 22 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I have flushed the cooling system and replaced all the coolant with new, thinking that a previous owner could have used Radweld or similar to cure a leak. What side effects am I likely to have if I just remove the thermostat, and run the car permanently without it. I guess the car will just run cold for longer, and never get up to it's 'optimum efficiency temperature', therefore, being slightly less efficient. Am I right, or horribly wrong?
  • Vauxhall Brava Diesel 6 Jan 2003 (Forum)
My brother runs a 1995 Vauxhall Brava 2.5 litre diesel with the Isuzu diesel unit. It went wrong before Christmas and was diagnosed with a faulty injector pump. He had a replacement one fitted and it went fine until a few miles from home when it stalled and eventually started with some difficulty.
  • Symptoms of a worn distributor cap? 19 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I have also noticed that the chrome exhaust tip seems to foul very quickly with darkbrown/black exhaust residue on its rim. Could this be the result of unburned charges ending up in the exhaust? Note the car runs slightly rich on a dyno run but because the acceleration is progressive rather than sudden the hiccup problem does not occur. What symptoms would you normally expect of a worn dis' cap? Regards, dan

  • DS 5 - Smoke from DS DS5 Diesel engine after a short run 16 Jan 2018 (Forum)
It does regular short journeys and as such doesn't get up to temperature. However it often gets good long runs at speed, the last being 500 miles over Christmas up to Aberdeen and back. I've always filled it up with Shell V-Power Diesel.   Today I went on a short run of about 10 minutes to the supermarket, and back home again after about half an hour.

  • Nearly new car running very badly 12 May 2005 (Forum)
I have a 2001 Citroen Xsara 1.4, which I understand uses the PSA 1.4TU engine. From about 6 weeks old, the car would run a bit 'rough' when started whilst warm, and fine when started cold. Dealer couldn't find any problem even after a few visits, so I took it to another dealer who were more helpful. By this time, it had periods were it would run really rough, with a bitty yet 'boomy' engine tone, and was very much down on performance.
  • Next car in 18 months time -a blog. 22 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I suspect that many other BRs are in a similar frame of mind half the time so I thought I?d record my current thoughts and see how these change and develop over the next 18 months. We run two cars. SWMBO has a 2005 Grand Scenic and I run a 2002 52 Mondeo. The Scenic is used mainly for my wife?s business and school runs. It doubles as the family car on those increasingly rare occasions when all 5 of us go out together.
  • Volkswagen Passat (1988 - 1997) - 96 2.0 Poor running, hesitation. 5 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The car then feels hesitant and you can feel that it isn't happy - at one point this afternoon it was so bad I almost thought I was running out of fuel. If you accelerate sharply for a brief second or two it clears but soon comes back within another few seconds. I had a routine service by Tune Up about a month ago and when I advised of the symptoms (although they weren't so severe or common then) a fault code was found in the system - lambda lower limit error indicating that it was running rich, I hope I've got that right, I know nothing about such things?
