Radiator cooling Fan - 1992 Astra Estate 22 May 2006 (Forum)
For 1992 Astra SRi estate at what coolant temperature should the radiator cooling fan start up? I was surprised this AM when an M3 jam caused a rise in the gauge indicator temperature higher than expected. The fan does work. The situation is complicated by the fact that the temp gauge reads low, normal thermostat temp = 88degC shows as 84 (engine temp has been checked with electronic thermometer = 88) So when the gauge shows 90 I worry? -
Rover 'K' Series Engine Cooling System 23 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I replaced the Cooling System Temperature Sensor on my Freelander the other day in the hope that this would cure a problem with the Cooling Fan not kicking-in causing the engine to overheat. When draining the Coolant from the engine, I noticed that the fluid seemed to be of very high viscosity - almost treacle-like. The engine was cold. Is this normal ???. Note: I got the car back from the garage recently after having a cylinder-head gasket replaced - I'm worried the garage might not have used the right ratio of water/anti-freeze, which might also exasperate the overheating problem ?. -
Golf Mk2 1600 Driver - Core plug leak. 2 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I have finally (I hope)traced the intermittent water leak (sometimes nothing a week, sometimes a litre) from the coolant. It appears that the smallest of leaks is coming from the Core plug on the Off side of the inlet manifold ( I presume that it has a water heated manifold. The pipe work is at best described as confused.) -
Another 306 thread! 6 Nov 2003 (Forum)
My first reaction is "get a second opinion." Further questioning reveals no evidence of oil stains on engine block, no loss of coolant, no mayonnaise under oil filler cap. Car only does low mileage (3,500 since April), mostly shortish journeys. What does the team think? -
Radiator repair fluids 18 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I am posting this on behalf of a colleague, who recently put some radiator repair fluid into his coolant. Somewhat curiously, since adding the fluid, the idle speed on his Isuzu turbo diesel powered Cavalier has increased dramatically - previously the car would settle at around 800rpm when up to temperature, but now the engine won't drop below 1400rpm! -
Thermostat - How important? 22 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I have replaced the thermostat in my 1989 Rover Metro (1989) several times over the last year, as they keep jamming closed, causing the engine to overheat. I have flushed the cooling system and replaced all the coolant with new, thinking that a previous owner could have used Radweld or similar to cure a leak. What side effects am I likely to have if I just remove the thermostat, and run the car permanently without it. -
Xantia follow up 27 Feb 2002 (Forum)
The only complication seems to have been the introduction of an airlock in the system following the coolant replacement, which I resolved with a little more help from this post . So fingers crossed, that's it over with. Thanks to everyone who responded, especially DW. -
Renault Clio Heaters 6 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Whenever the heater is put to "hot" it will only blow luke warm air out of the vents - no matter how hot the engine is. The pipes going into the heater are hot and I have flushed the system out and replaced the coolant, but to no avail. The only thing I can think of is that the flap is not opening properly or that the matrix is broken. According to the Haynes manual to check that the flap is opening properly I will need to take the whole dashboard out! -
Renault Clio - Water leak, Renault/RAC unable to find 25 Jun 2019 (Forum)
The rac came to my home, Unable to find a leak, but told me if i was to drive the car, make sure its only short trips and to monitor the reservoir and top up with tap water when required and to get Renault to check the car ASAP plus for Renault to change the water coolant since i had been using tap water Last Friday i took the car into Renault for 8:30, because it was a 25 miles to the garage, I asked that to check the car while the engine was hot and to give me a time when the car was going to be ready, after 2 and half hours, i asked whats happening to my car, i was told that they had not got round to my car, so i ended up going into town, 2 hours later i got a call telling me that my car was ready but unable to find any fault and did i want to go ahead to add the water coolant which i replied yes, The lady informed me that the price would be £40 changed to me since no fault was found, i told the lady that as far has i was concerned, my Car was still not fixed, But would not listen to me, So i told her not to add coolant. -
Carina II -- Tell me the worst, doctor 14 Jun 2002 (Forum)
When it had cooled I limped into the nearest garage who kindly pointed out that my radiator was empty (thanks mate!) and filled it up with water free of charge. I was surprised at the lack of coolant -- the levels were topped up and I had seen no signs of steam. A couple of gallons of water cooled the engine down nicely and got me back home. When I checked the car later on the driveway, I noticed no significant coolant leakage and all the hoses seemed fine. -

Nissan Pathfinder 2.2 TDI 2005 plate - Head or Head gasket gone less than 3 months... 13 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Fast forward to now (I picked the car up on 17 March 18), and last night the truck overheated. Once the engine had cooled down, I checked the expansion tank and the coolant level was well below minimum. Most of the coolant had apparently exploded from the top of the expansion tank and was now on the Lincolnshire highway or in the engine bay (you could see little puddles of orange fluid). -
Peugeot 207S 1,4CC- 2008 - Peugeot 207S 2008 water in ECU problem 23 Feb 2018 (Forum)
Today the car only lasted 2 hours after drying them out when they became full of water again and the car came to a halt once again. The water does not smell or have any colour so it can't be coolant or wiper wash. It is not the engine coolant sensor either. Does anyone have any advise please as this is driving me insane. Do I have to spend lots of money trying to find the fault or just accept the great decrease of value to my car and sell at a loss? -
