    So it was with some trepidation that I changed the thermostat on the Synergie yesterday to cure a persistent coolant weep from the underside of the housing and erratic engine temperature. Anyway, the thermostat housing is a plastic moulding with 3 metal collars where the bolts hold it on to an alloy casting, and far from being a problem, the bolts turned almost immediately and spun out nicely.

    have searched the old backroom to your thread about mondeo pinking as I am stuck with the following- 95 1.8 zetec mondeo, pinks really bad during hot weather, but only after the 1st intial start up & run, the next run(s) after engine is up to temp allways produces terrible pinking unless you use minimal throttle opening. during cooler weather & at night no pinking. have replaced the engine coolant sensor, checked the grey "fusible diode" (ford parts description!)near the bulkhead- it seems to be a fuse as several others checked all turn out to have continuity both ways?. A frend in an ex ford franchise has put it on the fds diagnostics kit which shows no fault & the air temprature sensor shows readings on the multimeter similar to the book but its difficult to be realistic with a hot air gun!

    Engine stripped - 16 valves bent, 6 Valve guides cracked and cosmetically marked pistons. There is no evidence of oil or coolant leaks in the cambelt area that could have contaminated the belt. What caused the failure? The belt itself. Although I am replacing them anyway, the tensioners, water pump etc are all OK with no play or noise in them.

     Went back to the garage and they installed new battery and dismissed white smoke.  Less than a week later, coolant light on dashboard appears and checked coolant container which was below minimum.  Telephoned garage who advised topping up and keep eye on levels.  Two days later - car would not start - eventually started and white smoke billowed from exhaust pipes - we thought car was on fire with the amount of white smoke.

    The AA did some checks and confirmed it was not leaking. When putting in high revs at a standstill they told me the radiator was remaining cold and the coolant was not circulating. I have taken it back to the garage and they have spent 3 days with it. At first he said that the coolant was circulating and the next day confirmed it wasn’t.

      When the car does start sometimes I hear a bubbling noise whilst driving (possibly from the radiator) and the coolant has needed topping up several times in quick succession which is weird. The last week the low oil light came on and I topped it up. It's come on again today and it's a little low but no milkyness on the dipstick.

    When I carry on driving the needle slowly returns to the 90 degree position and then stays there until the next time it happens. In addition, I've been losing coolant and having to top up. But the temperature rise still happens even after I've just topped up to the max mark. As you will have gathered, my technical knowledge is severely limited. So any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

    There is no issues with the start up of the engine or engine performance and the oil on the dip stick is a bit dirty brown but not the dreaded coolant brown milkshake.  Opinions, should this be dead now if she did put anti freeze in? Is her engine likely to just die anytime.   Thanks for any help as the Internet does help much when you Google this issue.

    About 18 months ago I had a new radiator fitted (the original started to weep at the bottom). I had new coolant and ATF topped up at the same time (some ATF was lost because the radiator incorporates an ATF cooler). The car was serviced (oil, filters and checks) in July last year. Yesterday evening I checked the ATF and was surprised to find it was low.

    The warning light for the engine being too hot has been showing lately and I am unsure if this pipe is related to it or if I just need the coolant topped up. I have checked all around the area of the pipe and can see nowhere that it should be connected to.  Does anyone know what the purpose of the pipe would be and where the loose end should be connected?

    I’ve had it plugged in to the computer and nothing comes up. I’ve changed the fuel pump relay. I’ve changed all 4 glow plugs. Had a new coolant temperature sensor on it. Serviced with new fuel filter. I’ve put some diesel cleaner additives through a full tank. Has anyone had anything the same? It’s odd how once it’s started once, that it’s fine for the remainder of the day, until the next day where it starts all over again.

    In answer to DJL with the Volvo XC60 D4, if his car has Volvo's newish VEA D4 4-cylinder 2.0 diesel, the problem is almost certainly related to the well-known problem these cars have with the EGR cooler & valve. The EGR cooler design, and coolant flow to it, has been revised several times to fix the problem, which is overcooling of the exhaust gas. This creates condensation in the cooler which mixes with the exhaust gas, creating a mucky paste which eventually gums the cooler and valve up.

    Additionally as low speeds in first/second it surges slightly, only 10-30rpm, is this another issue or normal? The oil is fine, so is the coolant. Ive checked the air filter and tube they're both clean, as is the face of the throttle that I can see. Ive pulled the spark plugs and theyre all good as well although I dont know what the gap is.

    I had a failure of the O-rings which joins the heater matrix pipes to the pipes coming from the engine compartment. This led to anti-freeze/coolant leaking inot the driver's footwell. Ford have no altered the spec and there is no longer a joint invovled. However they can (or will) not supply new O-rings or tell me the exact sixe of the O-rings.

    It will drive well for a period of time and then kangaroo badly with the revs dropping and then suddenly returning to normal. It has just had a new throttle idle control motor unit and coolant temperature sender. Also it has had good second hand inlet manifold preheater and fuel pump relays. To give you an extra clue after the engine has cut out the fuel tank vent valve behind the airbox clicks in time with the inlet manifold preheater relay.

    Problem which has been going on for a few months now: loads of white smoke and what sounds like something blowing. the MPG on the computer sarts to rapidly fall too. no loss of oil or coolant. here is the puzzling bit - it only does it randomly. If I turn the ignition off then on, it will stop the smoke / blowing - mpg returns to normal. it can restart smoking within two minutes or stop completely until the next occurance - i can travel miles without it happening.

    Hi All I've had a coolant leak and fried the engine of my Fiesta and been told by a friendly mechanic that it will be cheaper to get a new engine and put it in. I know my engine code is DHA but have only been able to locate DHC and DHF engines in the local scrap merchants which I've read online won't work with the engine management computer in my car despite being almost identical to my existing engine (same model and and cylinder size etc).
