  • Range Rover - surging and poor starting 22 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Hiya, My mum's 1996 Range Rover diesel has been a bit temperamental recently. Two weeks ago it wouldn't start, was trailered away to local independent who diagnosed the fuel pump and replaced it. We got it back last week, but it was still reluctant to start in the morning (taking 30 seconds usually), and the engine surged from time to time, but stopped if you switched it off and then started again.
  • Any - Cheap way improve fuel economy by 10% ? 24 Sep 2014 (Forum)
Toyota, Honda, Citroen etc) charge upwards of an additional 3 to 5 thousand pounds for a petrol or diesel electric 'hybrid' version of several of their standard models - only to achieve little better than a 5 mpg real world improvement - then my invention, which could be applied to any modern petrol or diesel car for probably much less than £500 on the RRP - should be far more attractive.

  • Renault Clio - Should I change my car to a diesel? (advice) 3 Jun 2022 (Forum)
I have recently eyed up a 1.5 litre engine diesel red Renault Clio car at a local trusted garage that actually does around 60-80mpg. This I have worked out the costs of my fuel bill could potentially be halved with long distances I intend to travel – considering the MPG is double on my current clio.
  • Mazda 3 2.2 Sport Nav '17 - Mazda 3 2.2 Skyactiv Diesel Facelift issues 27 Apr 2022 (Forum)
Hi All, I've read up as much as possible on the limited amount of information available on the Mazda 2.2 diesel (2017). It seems they used to be very problematic with dumping fuel into the oil, DPF blocking, EGR valves etc... a lot of the forums I've read tend to talk about pre 2017 models; making me unsure if these issues are still present in the facelift model.

  • Honda Jazz - Good long termer? honda jazz 26 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Should add that I am wanting to save some cash on running costs so perhaps my first point is academic! Also been looking at the 1.6 focus, but dont think that its much better on fuel than my 2 litre, so apart from being newer, not much advantage. I do fancy the diesel 1.6 but being put off by all the horror stories on net about impending large bills from failing turbo, injectors, fuel pump, dmf, etc!!!!
  • Vw Passat 1.9TDI 52 reg - Car not starting 29 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Just recenly the car will start from cold but not  once warmed up AA sprayed easy start into air intake and car started first time, been in garage for 2 days now and they cant find the problem plenty of diesel from the pump but it is not getting to the injectors. There are no blockages within the fuel filter which is new but the car doesn't seem to have any fuel for starting only when running. Can't find any air leaks and or any crimped pipes.

  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 94 1.4d lack of power 17 Sep 2009 (Forum)
The oil and water seem clean. I've drained the fuel filter and tried again with the air box off. It starts up very well and the engine is very quiet (compared to a 306 1.9d with 165k anyway) I've got a new fuel filter and air filter in the post. The brakes are not dragging, I've checked each wheel.
  • Worst excuse from a mfr/dealer/tech 17 May 2007 (Forum)
What's the worst / most implausible / most outrageous nonsense you've been fed by a manufacturer, dealer or mechanic? Mine has to be when I ran out of fuel in a 2001 406 2.0 HDi. The computer was still showing a range of 20 miles, and when I added a gallon of diesel, the thing went haywire, went into a sulk in ECO mode and then died completely. It ended up having to be recovered to the local Peugeot dealer.
  • Road Pricing 22 Mar 2006 (Forum)
If our esteemed government is really serious about cutting congestion and not about raking in yet more stealth tax, then I propose the following simple remedy which will cut congestion and emmisions. Ration Fuel. All drivers will be allocated fuel vouchers. UK trucks that carry freight will obviously be allowed more. This would mean that the small efficient cars would do more miles,as would diesels. Of course this will never happen because we all know that all measures taken by the government to sort out congestion etc,are just a smokescreen to relieve the motorist of yet more money.
  • getting finer injection spray 12 May 2002 (Forum)
Now ever higher injection pressures are used to obtain better combustion more power and lower emissions, eg diesel engines with common rail and unit injector pumpe duse technology. Some gas turbine fuel injectors use vibration from piezo-electric vibrators to obtain a smaller fuel size droplet and hence enormous emission reduction benefits.
  • Kia Sportage 1.7 diesel. - More frequent DPF regens. 30 Apr 2024 (Forum)
Any ideas what's causing this? The engine runs fine but i did notice that in the 30 mile journey on the motorway the fuel consumption was about 5 mpg lower than normal.

  • Eco Cars in General - Cars with Low CO2 benefits 9 Sep 2014 (Forum)
I'm trying to figure out the benefit to the environment (if any) of buying a second hand diesel car over the same model with Petrol. If (for example) the the diesel does 45 MPG and the Petrol 25 MPG then obviously you will personally be consuming less fuel / producing less CO2 with the diesel.
  • Citroen C5 1.6HDi to Citroen C3 1.4HDi - From a 1.6HDi to a 1.4HDi - thoughts? 6 Jun 2013 (Forum)
Now I drive around 30-40 miles a week and no regular long drives. I live on one of the Hebridean Islands and fuel is very expensive (£1.65 average per litre of diesel) so I'd prefer to get another diesel car - and, it seems that the equivalent size diesel drives better than the petrol. I'm wondering what it'd be like to go from a 110bhp 1.6HDi to a 70bhp 1.4HDi, bearing in mind that the C3 is 500kg lighter than my current C5?
  • Ford Focus - Focus 2007 1.6 diesel longer to start after server 19 Apr 2012 (Forum)
I took my 2007 Focus 1.6 diesel in to a local garage for a 75000 mile service this week.  After picking it up, its noticeable that it takes significantly longer to start - used to catch as soon as you turned the key, now it takes maybe 1-2 seconds of turning over before it catches.
  • Peugeot 306 1.9 D Turbo - 306 1.9 Diesel Turbo - Priming pump 14 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I don't normally try my hand at much beyond routine servicing (though at 212,000 miles I must be doing something right!) so I'm not keen on re-arranging fuel lines to accommodate this pump unless the problem worsens.  Has anyone replaced one of these pumps, and if so, do you have any advice?
