  • Mondeo - duff speaker connection? 17 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Yet another of those niggely little things that occasionally works/mostly doesn't on the old Mondy Mk2 - I guess it's at a comparable life stage to me! I reckon car years are like dog years i.e. seven car/dog years equals one man year. The LHS front speaker cuts in and out - mostly out - and I suspect it could be due to a poor connection behind the door panel.
  • Estate car for vet 9 Mar 2005 (Forum)
My sister in law is a vet, currently in New Zealand, but heading back to the UK soon. Out there she uses an old Subaru Legacy estate, but has no idea about suitable cars in the UK. I'm hoping all you knowlegable people can help out some.... Budget - assume up to £10,000, so will be 2nd hand 4x4 not necessary Mileage will be considerable, probably 20,000 per year Petrol or diesel, but assume diesel better with the mileage No pref for manual or auto Size - estate probably best bet.
  • Nissan Maxima QX - Nissan Maxima QX 10 Oct 2019 (Forum)
Have just inherited a Nissan QX. I wasn't sure about the car but Cannot believe how nice it is to drive.  The car is 20 years old and everything works perfect on it. Its big and comfy   not a sports car but comes with more toys  than my modern car.
  • MINI Clubman - Motorpoint or Main Dealer 12 Apr 2018 (Forum)
SWMBO wants an 18 month old Mini Clubman.  Fine by me and the two major sources are Mini dealers or Motorpoint. For what are effectively identical cars of age, mileage and specification, the Motorpoint cars are about 2-3% cheaper.
  • Smoking at the wheel 7 Dec 2017 (Forum)
The latest eciggies let out such a volume of smoke that smoking them at the wheel must be impossible.   I first saw a driver smoking one in a parked car with the window open.   The car was next to me and I had difficulty seeing the smoker.   Using a mobile phone while driving is illegal; how about smoking an ordinary cigarette ?   My car, ten years old, has a cigar lighter.
  • Honda Shuttle (1999) - European Breakdown cover for older cars 17 Aug 2016 (Forum)
Now the Shuttle is more than 16 years old we are being refused breakdown cover for our holiday in Germany/Poland. Although I have every confidence the car won't let us down, we need to have some peace of mind. Can anyone recommend a European breakdown service for older/classic cars??

  • Hiring in a car in the uk 21 May 2014 (Forum)
Could anyone let me know if there is a upper age limit to hiring a car in the UK. I have family coming over from NZ later this year and want to hire a car, but the one doing the most driving is 87 years old. There seems to be a limit of 75 on some of the rental websites but some are fairly vague over age.
  • First car, Fiesta or Corsa 14 May 2013 (Forum)
Buying for a 17 year old (who wants a RWD Escort with Cosworth power). Insurance costs have helped to narrow the choice down to a 2002 1.25 Fiesta or a 2002/3 1.2 Corsa, perhaps 40k miles. Assuming both cars are reasonably reliable(?)

  • Why will car drivers not reverse, incompetence? 15 Sep 2010 (Forum)
After a week in Cornwall, where my car appeared to be the only one fitted with a reverse gear, incl being asked to move my non blocking carefully parked car so as to prevent a 35 year old women "struggling" ( her words ) to reverse. She was driving a wee Peugeot & there was room for a people carrier.
  • Small Car for the elderly 15 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Hi I am looking for advice on which car to buy my elderly mother (80 yrs old and with one hip replaced). She has been used to driving an aged Fiat Punto but this does not have power steering and is beginning to get long in the tooth. What she would like is a reliable, cheap to run, easy to get into and easy to drive small car.
  • Abuse...which make of car attracts most? 15 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Mate of mine with a 3 series gets lots when he is driving around, things like not being let out at junctions and other drivers wanting to race. As soon as he mentions the car at work out come the old cliches. Which cars do you think get most problems?
  • Getting rid of smell in the car. 16 Oct 2006 (Forum)
In HJ's column last week, HJ described how to get rid of smell in the car as below. Did he mean white malt vinegar or coloured? First use bicarbonate of soda to get rid of the bacteria, then leave open bowls of malt vinegar in the car and boot overnight. This may read like an old wives' tale (and may well be one) but apparently it gets rid of the smell.
  • What is a "Kev-Car"? 15 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Guess I'm getting old. Heard the term Kev-car last week for the first time, and now heard it again yesterday twice. I believe it means a heavily modified car. Is this true? Where did the name come from? Is it in common useage?

  • Selling a car at auction 30 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Hi Has anybody here experience of *selling* a car at auction? I know somebody planning to do this via BCA but as his car is over 5 years old (it's worth about £1500 according to Parkers) I don't think they allow you to set a reserve price - which sounds like a good way to get fleeced to me!
  • Is it possible? 4 Apr 2002 (Forum)
...to buy and run a reliable car for less than £100 a month? This to include depreciating the purchase price over 12 months and one tank of petrol a month. (obviously talking old banger for occasional 2nd car use here) Two 30-something drivers, both max no claims, car garaged overnight, good area, no DIY servicing....
  • You can't sell Betsy ! A Christmas tale... 22 Dec 2008 (Forum)
A tale of three cars fighting for the affections of just two adults. The old Betsy a humble ford Mondeo estate, Little Bets the Ka and new Betsy a Vauxhall Signum. Old Betsy was bought second hand 4 years ago. The year my biggest customer went bust owing me what was most of that year's income.
