  • Air filter on Toyota 1.4 vvti Corolla 21 May 2003 (Forum)
The air filter on my Corolla 1.4 vvti needs replacing, according to Toyota, every 2 years or 20K miles on the full service (oil & filter @ 10K) - but I do 35K per annum, so have been getting through 2 minor & 2 main services every year for the last 2 years until the warranty ran out at 60K - expensive @ Toyota ! After one more Toyota full service (£180 thanks), I decided to get my local Kwik Fit to to the next oil & filter change - which they did very well (£26 with semi-synthetic) - in fact, the engine ran better than after the Toyota full service (?).
  • Smokey Ford Escort 1.8TD 9 Nov 2004 (Forum)
The car is a 95 1.8TD with 74K miles which appears genuine. The smoke is dark/black so its a fuel problem. I change the oil/filter every 4K miles and the oil level hardly moves and so far have never had to top it up between changes so its not an oil problem. The darker nights now allows me to see "exactly" when it smokes, as I use the person's headlights behind me to experiment!

There's a pipe that connects to the back ot the engine, and a couple of either switches or sensors. Also , might have overfilled at oil change - does this matter too much?

  • Audi A4 Allroad - sticking valve or rocker arm 21 Aug 2010 (Forum)
3.0 litre v-6 petrol, showing low compression on number 1 cylinder, spoke to a couple of people and they suggested the cheaper option first with an engine flush and then an oil change, which i have done, other than that its a costly bill for a strip down, timing belt was changed at 65k so thats ok, now done 97k, any ideas people, thanks in advance, wattie.

  • Valve Clearances. 22 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I have done 18,000 kms in two years (used daily) and it is soon due for the major service which includes valve clearance check. My question is, it has been ridden really gently and oil changes have been done every 1000 miles as per the schedule. Spark plug and air filter changed/ cleaned regularly! What else can I do to prolong the life of the motor? Thanks for any advise.

I have just has an oil and filter change (at same time as new cam belt) and they added this Ecotek 100 product. Anyone any experience of it? Is it just a way of garages earning extra money. They used half and left me with the other half for future top ups.

  • Dealer service or DIY? 16 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Wife's Clio is seven years old, we have had it serviced two yearly by a Renault dealer (inc a cambelt change) which meets Renault's service schedule, i.e. it has FRSH. Two year gaps is too long by my book so I have done intermediate oil changes plus changed the plugs myself and checked the brakes etc. Question: Should we invest 100 to 150 quid in another dealer service or should I do it all DIY now?
  • Gearbox problem 1.6 8v Clio 14 Sep 2003 (Forum)
It has been serviced etc by our local main dealer. I am having problems with 2nd gear - basically if I change gear very slowly, everything is fine. However, if I attempt a 'racing start'(!!), I end up crunching into second. Changing down doesn't seem to be so much of a problem. The last time this happened, I had the gear box oil changed and this seems to cure the problem temporarily.
