  • Nissan Micra timing retards 25 Jun 2004 (Forum)
My 1998 Nissan Micra, 1.0 engine, automatic, retards timing for about 20 degrees. It has been checked at a Nissan dealer, and two independent garages. The last one discovered that the ecu puts out spike waveforms when it is running normally.
  • Toyota Corolla Verso 5 May 2004 (Forum)
The 114bhp T Spirit costs £20,095(Twenty thousand and ninety five pounds) with metallic paint and is not even available as an automatic. Add the leather and SatNav and it costs £24,195. Now I am a great fan of Toyota but £24,195 - for a Corolla!!

Just one question though - Do you need to be a member in order to post pictures? If so, are you automatically a member if you post on the Back Room or if you have a hotmail address? Many thanks Ok - that's 2 questions - never mind -- "Ah...beer - my only weakness - my achilles heel if you will"
  • Saab 900 discs and brakes. 11 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Evening all, I checked my discs and pads today, and thought they could probably do with replacing, as it's an automatic, and is heavy on pads anyway. So I rang the local Saab garage for a quote and they said £250.00 incl fitting. I then looked on Eurocarparts.co.uk, and found the Saab OE parts for £127.00 incl vat and delivery.
  • car novice 30 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I have an 1998 Ford Escort AUTOMATIC done 40,000 miles and I must admit it has so far given no major problems. Recently when I start it first time in the morning,it starts quickly but as soon as I try changing to 'Reverse' or 'Drive',it switches off.
  • Air-con 26 Jan 2002 (Forum)
My friends are not convinced, claiming high fuel bills and loss of power. Any setting of the heating system to the screen on modern cars automatically turns the A/C on, so is the manufacturer and honest John correct or should A/C be used more sparingly (cold/weekly/or unless you need it)?
  • Scorpio surging 1 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I have a Ford Scorpio 2.0i K plate automatic that will sometimes hesitate when starting off but will then suddenly surge forward. The engine does not increase revs at first but then takes off and is difficult to stop. I have also experienced surging on a high speed motorway run.
  • headroom 28 Jan 2001 (Forum)
Dear Honest John I am intending to buy a car for my 18 year old son who is 6 feet 4 inches tall but has a long body rather than long legs. He needs extra headroom rather than leg room. We want to get him an automatic rather than manual gearbox and are looking for a car with about a 1200cc engine nearly new any suggestions Yours David Lindsay
  • Lacetti 1.6 SX - Chevrolet Lacetti Automatic Engine Warning light 10 Apr 2012 (Forum)
Cut a long story short, a few months after purchase the car started to struggle to change it's gears (automatic transmission), and had a loss of power, uphill especially, the engine warning light appeared, and car had loss of power. NOTE, this only happens when the roads are wet. Took the car to my local garage where purchased.
  • any - boot size 2 May 2021 (Forum)
Which similar car, at under £2000, has the same or greater boot capacity. It must be ULEZ compliant, preferably petrol automatic and capable of carrying about 700Kg? Is anyone interested in my 850? Good tyres, 6 months MOT, drivable.
  • Mercedes A180 CDI - Mercedes A180 CDI Alternator causing Transmission 1 Feb 2019 (Forum)
I have an A180 CDI Avantgarde 2005 (automatic). Have been driving it for 1 1/2 months without any problems. Last weekend I got the alternator error on the dashboard and drove it to the local garage. It appears now that the car won't move at all as there is a transmission problem.
  • Hyundai i10 - grrrrrrr noise 18 Dec 2018 (Forum)
2009 automatic 72000miles, noise starts when I boot the gas down from a standing start. comes from bulkhead low down central area. gearbox fluid looks ok and box works as it should. at first, the noise stopped when slipped into neutral but now it's just the same. makes noise when stationary and moving, gets a bit worse as revs rise. driven gently its all ok for a few hours.
  • Potentially going onto 12 points 14 Nov 2018 (Forum)
Speed Awareness course and potential hardship aside, 3 of my 9 points will lapse on 26th November. If they don’t get round to issuing a summons until after 26th November, will the summons automatically lapse, as when they check my record, I’ll only be showing 6pts, and if that is the case, will they just send me a 3 point penalty and a £100 fine?.
  • Car Recommendation 22 May 2018 (Forum)
Hi All,  I have really been struggling to find my next car of choice which I intend to keep for the next few years. I want it to be slightly luxurious, no bigger than medium sized, ideally an automatic (but no biggie), petrol, and more importantly have all the extra such as pano roof, heated seats and sensors or reverse camera. Honestjohn recommended a Kia Venga/ Hyundai IX20 but are there anymore recommendations?
  • Honest John’s Motoring Agony Column 10-03-2018 Part 2 17 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Ref the question ' Pressing matter'. The comment about left foot braking on automatics. Will the automonus city braking prevent a runaway incident where the accelerator is pressed instead of the brake? I have a Kia Niro with this automonous braking feature, and because the parking/emergency brake is foot operated I do not consider left foot braking an option.
  • Accord and Avensis CVT 30 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Hi, Sorry for another post but thought the topic was changing in my last one. I want another automatic large family car. Avensis/Accord size. I like the sound of CVT’s. I’ve heard many hate them but I’d like to try one and Honest John reckons the Multidrive S CVT in the Avensis (2009-2015) is a great one. which Accords had a CVT and was it as good as their other auto boxes?
  • Ford Mondeo - Which gearbox and maintenance requirements? 4 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Hi, I believe the MK5 Mondeo 2.0 Ecoboost 240 (Petrol) has a '6F35' automatic gearbox which is a traditional torque convertor box.  Can someone confirm if this is true? If so, does it have any service requirements?  I don't see any mention in ETIS about it but my dealer says it has a powershift box and requires fluid and filter change every 30k or 3ys.
  • Toyota iq - Buying low mileage car 2 Jun 2017 (Forum)
I was looking for a small automatic car and found the Toyota IQ in Toyota garage. It's 7 years old but have only 12k miles on it. Clear MOT history. What could be the problems with this car as it had low mileage? Could it already start to rot?
