  • Small cars were do I begin. 1 Oct 2018 (Forum)
I am thinking of something small and easy to run as well as cheap to run but there's two snags why I'm struggling and am hoping I can get help on here as my boyfriend is useless as he's driven the same car for the past 10yrs he drives a lexus RX (he has a better salary than me , he's a doctor, my salary is peanuts compared to his you don't earn much as a receptionist) so as much as I Love his car I can afford that and he doesn't know much about cars apart from knowing a fair bit about Lexus's.

  • What is the best car theft protection? 8 Aug 2023 (Ask HJ)
Which is the best device for car theft protection?
  • Used family sized car options 25 Jul 2022 (Forum)
The Accord, with its 2.2 I dtec, has so far reached 124,000 trouble free miles (purchased at 50k) I'm not overly keen on SUV type cars and my annual mileage is now lower at around 22k a year. Ideally I would go for a hybrid lexus GS but they're few and far between and seem to hold their value. I normally buy my cars at BCA as my father in law is a car dealer so I use his account.  I drove a mazda 6, but its naturally aspirated 2.0 petrol seemed underpowered.
  • Do pedestrians legally have to use the button on crossings? 21 Jun 2021 (Ask HJ)

  • Hybrids and Starting Trouble 16 May 2020 (Forum)
Further chit/chat during our socially distanced VE day drinks elicited fact that somebody else's (now gone) Lexus had also had same problem. IIRC he is an engineer; he certainly does most of his own car maintenance. His comment on the street's 'Whatsapp' is the really annoying thing about hybrids is they won’t fire up unless there is enough power in the normal 12v battery, even though you have a racking great big battery in the back.

  • Conversation with a mechanical fitter 14 May 2018 (Forum)
I had the pleasure tofay of spending nearly an hour in the company of a hire car company mechaincal fitter/repair guy who was attending a relatives hire van His pearls of wisdom -  If your buying a car, buy Toyota or Lexus If your buying a car, dont buy a Renault  If your buying a commercial vehicle, buy a MAN TGE (far better aftersales support than VW provide with the Crafter), a Vauxhall Vivaro (easy to work on, not alot goes wrong) or Toyota Hilux (only ever need a service) If your buying a commercial vehicle dont buy any IVECO model ('Fiat rubbish') or a Ford Transit Courier with the 1.0 ecoboost engine (clutches dont last long) A few recent things he mentioned -  * currently only Landrover dealers can change the rear brakes on the discovery sport, its meant to be very complex with the electric parking brake  * there is a batch of full size 67/18 plate ford transits with the hill assist that locks fully on and needs a dealer visit to provide a permanent fix  * recently did a first year service on a ssangyong musso and found it to be as well built as the hilux  * the new cummings diesel engine in the hilux is a delight, easy to service and work around

  • family coupe convertible 12 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Something like this: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201022360156834/  Though perhaps 60,000 miles is a bit on the high side - wondering about all those 'up and down's on the convertible mechanism. Otherwise there are: 3-series (not keen on BMW image) VW EOS Lexus IS (still too new to be cheap, so not really an option) Chrysler Sebring Ford Focus and a few French cars, which I won't consider. I suspect the 3-series is probably best, followed by the EOS and then C70.
