  • 1993 Polo starting problems 18 Jan 2012 (Forum)
I can get in the car in the morning, no matter what the weather or temperature and it will start first time every time, and run smoothly and cleanly. It'll go anywhere, at any speed for as long as I like and its gives no problems at all. If I stall the car at any point, it will restart without complaint. However, for the past few months if I stopped when the engine is warm for any longer than 5 minutes, the car wont start at all.
  • vw golf mk4 1.9 gttdi 130 - golf gt tdi 130 flat spot 16 Oct 2011 (Forum)
This would usually be attributeable to the turbo wastegate in my experience but I've also noticed a shiney area above the oil filler cap area on the top engine cover. I took the cap off with the engine running and there seemed a fair bit of pressure. The car starts perfectly every time and there is no smoke whatsoever even at higher revs so I doubt it's the rings. Could it be a blocked breather and if so which ones?
  • Ford Ka, Fiat Bravo - Two car family - trade-offs 3 Jun 2011 (Forum)
We really want to get down to 1 car, but work and home situations mean we need 2, with one as a ‘spare’ for occasional commute and around-town use.  Therefore, the thinking is for a little run-around   if the Micra/Fox/Polo/Ka scale for the shopping and a workhorse such as a Golf/Leon/Astra for commuting. We've been to a few car warehouses to see what's there, and found a 2008 plate new model Ka with around 13K miles at £5.5K and a Fiat Bravo 2007 plate, just under 40K for 5.6K.
  • Seat Leon FR TDI - To replace or not? A diesel dilema 28 Apr 2011 (Forum)
I have been scared by stories of injector failure, here and elsewhere, in the 2.0 PD 170 engine which is in this car. My intention was to keep the car to 6 yrs old and replace in Sep 2012. As a family we run two cars, and pay for them over 3 yrs, the idea being we are only ever paying for one car at a time. However, the scares over injector failure and making me wonder whether I should change sooner. I no longer do the miles to justify a diesel, at 10k a year.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV 2.0 GTI 2002 - Emission light/catalytic converter 27 Feb 2011 (Forum)
So, any advice/points to note on 2 issues: 1) The issue with the cat, should I give them another chance to replace it, but am I still going to be left with problems (they told me I had a 3 month warranty from when I bought the car - I'm worried the 3 months will run out and I will be left to pay to sort this out). I have also found the fuel consumption to be absolutely huge and it's costing me a fortune in petrol. I understood it wouldn't be overly efficient, but am I right to think (hope!)
  • Peugeot 306 - Cautioned for supposedly clipping someone 23 Feb 2011 (Forum)
When my Inlaws inquired what time the incident took place, it wasn't my Mother-in-law but Father-in-law who was driving the car at that time. He was then cautioned and told it was a serious matter,as it is reported as a hit and run accident.  My Father inlaw recalls the car at the side of the road and had to stop to let traffic in the opposite direction to pass, so he could manouver round the car and a lady who was walking around the car,(doing something or other) He did recall the lady as she was rather large and had a reflective jacket on, but never remembers hitting anyone.
  • Ford Focus TDCi (02 plate) - Focus 1.8 TDCi - clicking noise/glow plug light 26 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Also the dealer said problem 1 should be resolved by that long journey, which it hasn't been. I'm not sure how best to proceed with these issues I have run the standard check of DTC codes with the trip reset button, however this currently just shows 'none'. Is this meaningful, ie should I start by getting a proper diagnostic check done? Any advice on any of this gratefully received!
  • Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 01 1.25 Heating only works when engine pushed hard 9 Nov 2010 (Forum)
s definitely only working when the engine gets rather hot. I thought that it may have picked up some sort of air pocket so I have run the engine from cold to optimum temp with the reservoir cap off but this has made no difference. I even asked the garage to replace the valve to see if I had a faulty one, they did this but it has made no difference.
  • Peugeot 306 - A small list of problems... 6 Sep 2010 (Forum)
when i turn off the engine i can turn off the ignition remove the key and the engine will continue to run for a few seconds. On a short trip the car wont be affected as much. i am thinking prehaps fuel pump not shutting off fuel or something to do with the idle?  And lastly the steering wheel is off center although the tracking is fine.
  • VW Passat 1.8 litre (saloon, sunroof) - Passat battery drain mystery 6 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Did find water underneath rear driver-side, as expected, and a little underneat driver seat; cables that run through these areas appear to be fine though, no corrosion visible, wire shielding appears production-line intact. The standing drain on my battery is 0.09A (yes, 90 mA); this seems too high, this will drain my 70Ah battery in 30 days.
  • Mazda 6 2008 - Recall on my car whilst in production 19 Aug 2010 (Forum)
A very quick question. For those of you who are unaware of the issue i am having with my car, i had an engine run-away which simply means my car hit max revvs on its own accord. Mazda are simply blaming me for not checking oil levels when i specifically told them i do according to the handbook. Ok, the case has been going on for over a year now and yesterday i have just found out from VOSA what Mazda have failed to tell me after many letters asking them about a recall for the same issue which was introduced to Mazda 6's with a build end date of 2008, which left my car in that frame.
  • Mazda 3 1.6d 2006 - Cambelt/tensioner issues? 24 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Anyway in the last 2 weeks it now makes this noise everytime from cold for about 5 seconds, appears to be running rough, and now makes a strange squealing/grating metallic? sound that isn't over-loud but distinctive enough above 3000rpm.   I am really stumped and the garage are dragging their heals, they have it booked in for August.
  • Next doors cat & the space time incontinence 5 Jul 2010 (Forum)
What if there`s an error and you have to pull forward and not down? So that when your genome code is run through the medical repair machine - your left leg drops off - rather than you growing a new liver. Cos if we can`t allegedly get it right all the time with car manuals - what hope is there? I mean, every other creature we know seems to have limits to their understanding.
  • Renault Clio 1.2 Dynamique petrol 16v - Clio emissions light permanently on, car sluggish 27 Jun 2010 (Forum)
They hadn't bothered to tell me this earlier, so I lost a day's pay for nothing and the car still isn't fixed. So right now, I've got a Clio which runs (a bit sluggishly) with an annoying warning light, and which may well fail its MOT this month if I don't get it fixed.   After all this messing about, and even after reading the discussion boards, I've lost any sense of what the real problem and costs are likely to be, so any advice would be very welcome!
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 06 1.6HDI FAP DPF Removal Experiment 16 May 2010 (Forum)
I don't really want to cut out the honeycomb filter element inside the DPF, it is too valuable an item for that I think. Some questions I have no answers for yet, is what the ECU will do when the EOLYS fluid tank runs empty. Maybe I should try removing the magnet sensor in the fuel flap, to stop the EOLYS dosing taking place each time I fill up. Any comments would be appreciated.
  • Mazda 3 1.6 Petrol 05 Plate - Low Rev Vibration and Ambient Temperature Problems 26 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I had the alternator changed over Xmas as that was making a noise, when the mechanic replaced it he told me that the bearings were running out of alignment, the recent vibration is making me wonder if I've only just noticed the car does this or whether it is a new fault? Some ideas I have had are that if its got an exhaust gas re-circulator then it is becoming sooted up?
  • Mazda 323 - Mazda 323 Problem - Help Choosing Between 2 2 Apr 2010 (Forum)
The 1.6GXI private sale has had a new clutch, timing belt, waterpump and seems to have the last few years' receipts available at the least, maybe more to be dug out of a loft. A new clutch at 60k sends alarm bells, and it has mostly been used for short runs as far as I know. It's silver, and the rear wheel arches are in a really bad state for a car that has just turned 8 years old. 2 months tax left, 8 months MOT, total of 3 owners including the guy who is selling.
  • Ford Mondeo TDCi 130 Zetec - Replacement for poor Mondeo 26 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I'd really appreciate it if Backroomers could offer opinions on those cars as sound buys, what it's like running an older high-mileage car (it would be a first for me), and any suggestions about other family-size vehicles. I'm not necessarily wedded to diesel, though the economy seems attractive. Sorry this is such a long post, but would appreciate informed answers.
  • Renault Espace (1997 - 2002) - 02 2.2 DCI difficult starting 16 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Then, I'm thinking it can't really be any of the major faults reported in Vol1 & Vol2 (EGR, injectors, HP pump, turbo etc.) because some days its fine, and always after its started it runs OK anyway. Am I maybe looking at another sensor (TDC?) that's misbehaving, or a bad connection somewhere? Vol1 & Vol2 have made me rather fearful that it may be wise not to start poking around and going down the path of guessing and changing things - and at 90k maybe its time to chop it in.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 07 1.8 DMF again and vehicle decision 12 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I've been asking around this site while trying to choose some sort of car to buy to replace an Omega with something cheap to tax and run. There are specific interior space needs, I want diesel, and ideally would prefer auto, but probably can't afford it. Above all, I want to be get something that will be reliable for as many years as possible.
