OTT/Stupid or Honest? 19 Nov 2010 (Forum)
About 20 minutes later I get a call with her upset (she's pregnant - thus more hormonal than normal) saying she's just scraped the front of our car along the side of another while trying to park. I suggested she left a note on the windscreen with her details (she left an apology with her mobile number and offered to pay for repair). -
'Keepers' - preservation of brake pipes, etc. 15 Mar 2023 (Forum)
I still have an old jar of lanolin grease I inherited thirty years ago which when heated becomes liquid enough to paint onto things but almost solidifies at room temperature. Excellent for brake pipes. I've always just painted old engine oil on springs and subframes every three years or so. -
Chrysler PT Cruiser (2000 - ) - Parts not exactly free... 28 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Had to abort a trip to Sussex last Sunday at Roehampton Vale, where I became very aware of a dragging brake. In the petrol station there, the o/s front wheel was nearly too hot to touch. The AA sent a local proxy with a get-you-home truck which got us back here. On Monday took the car to my fine Aussie indy near here. He said the o/s disc had taken some punishment and anyway had corrosion on the inside braking surface. -

Driving, heat, and corporate manslaughter 27 May 2009 (Forum)
Frankly the thought of driving for 10 hours + in that heat scares me. This time we solved the problem by driving back overnight. On the plus side the heat was no problem, and we hit no traffic and did the trip to Calais in about 10 hours of easy driving. On the minus side, we drove straight through the night after a full days work, following several long days of work, which left me feeling knackered for about a week afterwards, and although it felt okay at the time, I? -

Car Ventilation 28 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Fresh air in the face could help to prevent this. Anyway, enough ranting. Anyone any suggestions - apart from buying a car made 10 to 20 years ago ?? -
Fan/hand encounter 27 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Took the astra in yesterday to get a leak in the exhaust fixed. the thing blows when cold, but quietens down when warm, so I assume a hairline crack. By the time I get to exhaust shop, it's all quiet, as the car has heated up. Up on the lift, the bloke looks underneath, holds hosepipe near ear, and near exhaust... Car is running, and heats up to the degree that the fan kicks in ... Bloke can't hear anything, so lowers car, opens bonnet, starts delving around with hosepipe... leans forward, reaches hand down to steady himself... brrrrrrrrrr as it hits the rapidly-spinning fan ... makes a mess of three fingers, blood all over the engine compartment .... this despite the large DANGER/GEVAAR/INGOZI sticker on the cowling above the fan ... -
Ford Focus Estate - 2017 Focus deals vs 4-5 year old cars 15 Feb 2018 (Forum)
My priorities are the engine. The only feature I want is heated front screens. Other than that I want the smallest wheels and fewest features. Modern cars have so much tat. Why do I need emergency brake assist? If I want to stop hard then I'll press the pedal hard. -

BMW 330 SE Saloon - Washer Jets 16 Apr 2005 (Forum)
If I 'pump' the wahser jet stalk then they 'squirt' water onto the wqindscreen, but if I pull and hold they splutter only. The other annoying factor is that when I started the journey, they worked fine. I aprked the car for about an hour, came back to it, the problems started. I know the washer jets are clear and no-one has tampered with the car. Any ideas from my learned colleagues please? Many thanks... -
Fresh Air 1 Feb 2012 (Forum)
In the good old days (1980s) I used to drive Vauxhalls and the centre face vent was connected to the outside air. I could have toasty warm feet, demisted windscreen and cold air to breathe and keep me awake. Climate control, air con etc are all wonderful and I would not be without them but why is there no new car that can give fresh, external air, when the heaters etc are on? -
Volkswagen Polo II - Very little hot air 6 Oct 2010 (Forum)
The car is a 2000 polo sdi hatchback and I think that there is a leak somewhere in the ducting between the fan unit and the windscreen vents. Has anyone experienced this or more importantly can anyone tell me how to get at the ducting? -
04 Fiesta with washer lights! 3 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Can't believe what I saw tonight - parked up was an 04 reg Fiesta with lights in his windscreen washers! These were white and not the usual boy-racer blue. Either these are now a factory fit option or they were the owners first priority when he took delivery of his new car! Wonder if he has invalidated the warranty in its first 24 hours.... -
Mondeo washers 25 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I have just been given the use of a V Reg Mondeo Ghia. Problem is windscreen washers - it would appear that a pipe has came adrift somewhere - every time I press the washers, the water comes leaking out the bottom of the car, just under where the bottle is. Is this an easy fix - at first glance I couldn't see how to access the bottle? -
