  • Mitsubishi Lancer - Botched Repair on Brand New Car 15 Jan 2011 (Forum)
I bought a brand new Lancer last month and am pleased with it. It has a fancy reversing camera viewed via the sat nav screen on it, which failed after two weeks. The car went to the dealers for repair. They had a look and need a part that has to be ordered.   I collected the car ( in the dark) whilst the bit is sourced.
  • Am I insured to collect wife's new car? 31 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Does this mean that I can legally drive the car home even if the former owner has cancelled her insurance on the car so there is no actual insurance for the vehicle? I know that such cover is third party only and that the car will ping up on any anpr cameras as uninsured but providing I have my cover note that shows I am covered for other vehicles will I be legal? I dont want to get caught on a technicality. (The reason I dont want to insure it individually straight away is that it will sorned for a couple of months).
  • Inconsiderate horse box towing 18 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Also wondered if this might slow up say emergency vehicles trying to get past a queue of slow cars. Is this sort of discourtesy illegal, is it ever likely to get punished (not from a speed camera, thats for sure!) However it great for bikers who can run straight past the chain of cars and know ahead they will have a nice clear road .
  • Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 2000 1.3 Speedo Fault - Help 19 Sep 2008 (Forum)

  • The Cotswolds crash 10 Mar 2008 (Forum)
so 7 dead....I'm deliberately not going to say what i'm really thinking out of respect for those that have died, (inc the person who's caused it)....and....the two parents sat in different hospitals hoping to hell that their kids make it however, what's the betting there'll be a speed camera there after this and/or road lane changes/double white lines etc.......when in all likelihood the real reason is poor driving from a person with a history of poor driving, who in my opinion was dealt with particularly leniently on the last occasion, if the news headlines are to be believed.
  • Unfair World 12 Jul 2007 (Forum)
A friend recently got caught by a speed camera. His fault maybe? The crime was driving about ~3 m.p.h. over the speed limit on a deserted urban dual carriageway where the limit had been reduced from 40 to 30 by extending the 30 m.p.h. zone outwards.
  • 3% Cash Back From Shell 22 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Briefly... 3% cashback on Shell fuel purchases (max £5000 per year) so not as good as it might be for business use, but fair for ordinarry customers. 1% on other purchases extended warranty on DOMESTIC appliances - not sure if it's just washing machines etc, or tv's & cameras, sat nav & stuff) price drop refund - if what you buy gets cheaper, for short period after purchase. So looks an OK card, if you settle bill every month - certainly better than previous reward of Shellpoints.
  • Military Road 4 Jan 2007 (Forum)
This runs parallel to the A69 and is mostly dead straight with some "big dipper" style dips and some fun bends which are mainly covered in mud at this time of the year to add to the excitement. Very little traffic, no speed cameras and the traffic police are much more interested in the the A69 (in fact my bro, who is in the know, tells me they now only have 2 "jam sandwiches" and their unmarked car has been taken off them).
  • Christmas Present - Budget Sat Nav? 28 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Requirements would be ability to stick in postcode/address, press button and off you go (my wife has only just mastered the DVD recorder). UK only. No speed camera spotting. Garmin i3 is available for around £100. Any good? Alternatives? I know a lot of backroomers have Tom Tom, but it will be a complete waste of money as she will only use it occasionally and I'll rarely use it either.
  • Playing with the Volvo C30... 24 Nov 2006 (Forum)
It really looked the part and although it was difficult to get a full appreciation of its performance (the 13-mile test-drive route almost exclusively used 40-50mph inner-city camera-laden sprawl) I would say that Volvo are almost certainly onto a winner here. Only 5,000 destined for the UK market in 2007(?)so a certain amount of exclusivity guaranteed too. Add a bit of leather inside the cockpit and I think I could be tempted?
  • Is it a Vauxhall, Opel or something else 11 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Odd post I know but I know you guys will be able to help me. I was watching Police Camera Action last night from around the early 90s. The cops were chasing someone and had a Senator, a Range Rover and another big car which rang a faint bell and brought an odd memory back to me. Trouble is, I can't remember for the life of me what they were.
  • What to do? 19 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Problem - today we received a slip of paper from the Plymouth police, noting that the V5 ownership had changed, and asking us for further details, reply c/o speed camera partership etc. The old address no longer had post forwarded, so anything before that would have been lost. No date is given on the slip, and as on the last trip into Plymouth (we go there less than once a month) we were both driving, we have no idea who was snapped.
  • Scenic 1 ! Plip Key Immobiliser 7 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Friend has 2 keys for his car but only one of the plips operates the central locking / immobiliser. Having followed advice on a previous post, I have checked using my camera phone that the plip is actually transmitting which it is. I assume this means that it has lost its "code" or whatever. Does anyone know if this can be done without going to a dealer? I remember reading a post somewhere about pressing the internal locking button in a certain sequence either gave you the key number or let you program but I can't find any link?
  • Red Barchetta 3 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Having read many arguments on behalf of the pro and ant motoring lobby on the subjects of cameras, speed limits, GPS monitoring, road tolls etc etc I was reminded of a Rush track called Red Barchetta, set in a future where actually driving a car yourself is rather frowned upon. While searching for the lyrics to the song I found the article from Track and Road in 1973 by Richard S Foster (A nice morning drive) that was the inspiration for the song.
  • I have a question Volume 24 13 Dec 2003 (Forum)
It does not need to be motoring related. In fact, in this thread it should not be. No politics No Speeding, speed cameras, traffic calming No arguments or slanging matches Nothing which I think is not following the spirit of the thread Nothing that risks the future of this site (please see the small print for details http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/credits/index.htm ) Any of the above will be deleted.
  • Variable speed limits 11 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Now question, given that the road was clear and the signs had just not been switched off, are these guys (assuming the camera was working properly) going to get done? The guys doing 80 being 40 over the posted limit must be in instant ban territory must they not?
  • Which type are you? 10 Nov 2001 (Forum)
He tells me he has passed my thoughts on to the governments John Spellar for a response on the study. He also enclosed a copy of the DETR document "The effects of speed cameras: how drivers respond" It seems they categorise us into four types : conformers; the deterred; manipulators and defiers. Mmmmm. I found the full document here; http://www.roads.dtlr.gov.uk/roadsafety/research11/ If you lok at Chapter 3 under The 4 types of driver, you will see in which category they (you know who "they" are) have lumped you.
  • Spain 22 May 2001 (Forum)
Drove across From Zaragoza to Madrid, sometimes travlling at 200 Kph, along beautifully maintained and arrow straight roads, when the roads passed through villages and towns, obviously we had to slow down, but instead of finding a Speed camera or a craftily hidden copper, they have a system which will turn a set of traffic lights to red if you approach the well marked sensor at over 50 Kph. Spain obviously hasn't caught on to the use of the motorist as a revenue "Cash Cow" - the fuel is much cheaper too - Diesel approx 45p / litre.
  • New Jaguar XF spotted? 30 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Amazed to see a prototype in village residential street, it was a case of spade down, in to the house, grab camera, and saunter round the corner - only to find it had disappeared in to a garage of one of the houses in private courtyard (nowhere else it could be). Coming out to resume digging duties a while later, blow me if it wasn't parked about fifty metres away, engine burbling, so with no time to grab camera, I went for a look.
  • Audi A5 Cabriolet - Windscreen Replacement. How many opportunities? 5 Jul 2024 (Forum)
There was light visible at the bottom of the screen. The second screen has smears on the inside by the camera (rear view mirror) meaning that the lights are stuck on high beam. A third screen is on order now as the engineer noting the warranty claim said the screen required replacement. There is no way of accessing those smears from behind by dismantling the rear view mirror housing apparently.
