The Third Way? 26 Mar 2002 (Forum)
As one Filipino said to me "it's just an expensive badge, that's all". (Stands, arms akimbo, ready to turn and run). -
Discovery SeriesII queries 27 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I won't bore you with the details, but on top of all the niggling faults I have endured, there are a couple of recurring problems on my latest one which the dealer has been unable to resolve for the last 18 months. The first is a vibration when the vehicle is on the 'over-run' at around 1100rpm. It feels like a transmission problem because the engine does not do it when the vehicle is stationery. The main dealer has told me it was the ACE (anti-lean) hydraulic pipes resonating, but I've driven other ACE equipped models and some do have it, some don't. -
"Check Engine" warning light 14 Jul 2001 (Forum)
The dealer also checked the computer itself, and it seems fine. I wouldn't say that it was an exhaustive check, but its a good as I'll get out here. The engine runs fine. Absolutely no change at all, as far as I can tell. Perfomance the same, consumption, temperature, oil pressure, CD volume - all the same. In the course of investigation it became apparant that if the battery is disconnected, even for a brief time, then the light stays off - usually for a week or so - then it comes back on. -
TuningBox for Diesels 21 Jun 2001 (Forum)
what a difference! It's difficult to explain the driving characteristics here but when the standard engine used to run out of puff @ 3750rpm ish, but now there is now another powerband, useable right up to the 5000rpm red line - to this effect I can be on the motorway at 95mph, put my foot down and the car accelerates rapidly. -
Skoda Fabia 13 Jun 2001 (Forum)
I think the summer weather may have improved things (I commented on this the other day in the ULSP thread) but it is possible that it needs a fair bit of running in - I had the same thing on my old Nissan. I'd be interested to know what anyone thinks the long term reliability is going to be like. Is it going to be about average or will it be a bit of a dog? -
16 important OIL questions answered! 8 Jan 2013 (Forum)
It is only really important to change oil regularly if the engine covers a low annual mileage made up of slow, short runs. This is being cruel to the oil and the engine! The oil, regardless of its quality, gets full of fuel and water vapour, and never gets the chance to evaporate it all off with a long fast run. The consequences are corrosion, ring and bore wear. -
Think once, think twice, think squirrel? 16 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Little did I suspect- As I passed an oncoming car, a brown furry missile shot out from under it and tumbled to a stop immediately in front of me. It was a squirrel, and must have been trying to run across the road when it encountered the car. I really was not going very fast, but there was no time to brake or avoid it,it was that close. I hate to run over animals, and I really hate it on a motorcycle, but a squirrel should pose no danger to me. -
Any - Stop / Start Systems 10 Dec 2017 (Forum)
And it's "our own" faults Here in the UK, despite the fact that VED is a drop in the ocean compared to the total cost of running a car, the level of VED any particular car attracts has a massively disproportionate effect on percieved value in the market place and hence on sales. People will moan like Bill about VED levels, yet never a murmour about depreciation! -
Vauxhall Corsa - Lack of Power/Gutless 12 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I bought a second hand fuel pump from a 2004 car that had only done 46,000 miles as the bottom end was knocking after running out of engine oil. 14. I have now ordered new vacuum hoses for the EGR and boost control valves and the hose to the boost unit in case these are collapsing internally. I really am out of ideas now! -
Citroen C3 8 year old - Car insurance putting us in harms way to save cash 29 Jul 2010 (Forum)
We were recently ran off the road by another driver, He was charged with dangerous driving and leaving the scene and being an idiot. During the hit and run, we were forced by the impact, off the road and went part way into a field, the car left front wheel was destroyed after hitting the roadside curb and the right wing impact side, was dented from the impact and mad max like behaviour of the driver. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 98 1.3 engine management fusing (F28) 8 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I located the fuse on the side of the road and changed it for a replacement 15A fuse (this was fuse number 28 in the auxiluary fuse box under the bonnet) the fuse supplies the engine mannagement system. The car started with no problems and I decided to get going whilst the car was running, I travelled annother 2.5 miles and once I was about one third of the way across the Forth Road Bridge Northbound when the same problem occured, the rev counter dropped to 0 and the engine stalled again, this being one of the least convenient places in the entire country to break down, since there is no hard shoulder. -

2,500 miles with the Aygo 9 May 2007 (Forum)
For the first 7 or 8 weeks the car was used predominantly by my wife for her local trips with the very occasional run out. 7 weeks ago I sold my car so we have been relying on the Aygo and I have been driving it a lot more. When I first started driving it had done about 1500 miles, but it seemed very sluggish ? changing to second gear needed lots of revs in first or it would die. -
SEAT/VW tdi pd VW505.01 oil follow up 21 Nov 2004 (Forum)
He even went as far as to say that engines run on non 505.01 spec oil are a time bomb waiting to go off and WILL be damaged (what!!!). He also said that 505.01 is only availble in synthetic form. Millers now do an oil that meets the 505.01 spec. -
Next fill of biodiesel 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
It's not actually illegal to run on cooking oil, whatever the quantity - it's just that you have to register with C&E to pay the fuel duty on the cooking oil you use as fuel. If you pay 35p a litre for the oil and 28p a litre for the fuel duty, then you can still save a lot of money. -
Need your help please.... 21 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I run a 22 car driving school, most of my cars are Vauxhall Corsas, of which on the whole are good and reliable but the one I am about to tell you about is worrying me now! It is a long and drawn out story, but I feel if I cut it short you will not get the full picture. -
Renault - RAC breakdown. Not a good idea 1 Jun 2025 (Forum)
I upgraded the policy to include free call out and nationwide recovery. I had a local auto electrician do a call out and simply replaced a fuse, got the vehicle running again in 5 minutes flat. There was still an issue with the lights and wipers not working though so I called the RAC back. They wanted to charge me to attend and if required an extra £850 for recovery? -
Any - Tyres again, finding the right deal. 30 Aug 2024 (Forum)
Our Forester summer set are getting thin, still very legal but i don't like going below 3mm even on the shoulders, up to now i've been running winter/summer sets (have second set of wheels), was going to leave tyre buying till next spring for new summer tyres but have decided this time to stay with the summer wheels and go all season instead, will flog the existing winter set which still have plenty of tead in due course. -
any - Modern petrol Estates - any known vices? 1 Aug 2024 (Forum)
I looked at what I can get for an absolute maximum of £7k + £1k contingent for sorting things on AutoTrader, and there seems to be a fair selection, so I like the panel’s opinion. We do everything with the car: short school runs, dog tasks, commutes, and the occasional 300-mile cross-country stint. We covered around 9500 miles last year, which is about right for us going forward. I'm looking with simplicity and travel comfort in mind, up to six years of age, about 520 litres of boot space with seats up, and I don't mind autos or manuals. -
Hyundai i30 GDI Turbo petrol - Petrol particulate filters 25 Jun 2023 (Forum)
I traded in my Golf TDI in June this year for a new Hyundai i30 1.4T GDI (petrol) as my daily commute has drastically reduced to just 3 miles in each direction with a longer run of 15-20 miles at weekends. With just 3k on the clock a warning light popped up on the dash yesterday which the handbook says concerns the build up of soot in the petrol particulate filter. I really had to dig deep into the handbook (over 500 pages!)
