  • Colt vs Getz vs Swift 18 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I do Motorways only on weekends (but again if I change job I may need to go motorway everyday). Estimated mileage 6k/year. Looking for great reliability and low running cost. I'll be the only driver and since my wife just started learning she'd do after few months. Recently in this forum there has been a long thread on Colt where everyone praised the car. Swift also got high recommendations from every where.
  • SWMBO's new Corsa 7 May 2007 (Forum)
Collected it today and have to say it looks very good. I also really enjoyed driving it home, and taking it out this evening. Clearly needs to be run in and get some more flexibility - but very precise and light to drive and no squeaks or rattles yet! Feels very well put together. So what do SWMBO and eldest daughter get really excited about - the car now has an AUX socket so they can play their MP3 players over the stereo system!!
  • Recommend a used supermini/small fam. 30 Apr 2007 (Forum)
. :-) Would prefer it to be something at least as new as a 2000 reg if poss... OK, so she mainly does school runs with about a weekly 60 mile motorway round trip to folks thrown in. All of the family is tall (I'm 6'5", she's 5'8", daughter #1 is 6'1" (at 13!) and daughter 2 is 5'2" (but she's only 9...) ) so a bit of room is needed in the back.
  • Lexus or Subaru? 24 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Well My VW Transporter was sold last week, and my Defender will follow shortly..ideal as a 2nd vehicle, but not very practical as a sole vehicle, especially for long weekends away using the motorway. Anyway, I had always wanted one to run short term, so now it is out of my system! My priorities are reliability and minimising depreciation, budget £8k (ish). On my recommendation, a friend bought a MY03 2.0 Lexus Sport Cross which she thinks is fantastic.
  • Mk3 Golf GTi fuel/stalling problems 28 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Hi all I own a Mk3 Golf GTi 2.0 8v 95' N-plate, which has been running well since i bought it last July up until the middle of last week. I filled my car up as i do every 2-weeks. Left the forecourt travelled up the road to work got less than a mile casually gazed across the dashboard, and noticed the fuel gauge rapidly decreasing.
  • Underpowered Fiesta mk4 1.25 zetec 20 Mar 2007 (Forum)
When i say lacking I mean if I floor it in 2nd gear the car will crawl up the rev range and will not rev over 5000rpm. If I have a clear dual carriage way and accelerate in 3rd gear I will usually run out of road before it will get to 70mph. Hills make this even more apparent, on 4th and 5th gear climbs I find myself dropping down to third and not accelerating. I have noticed when in say 3rd gear going up hill at around 3000rpm and over, I can hear a rattling type sound.
  • What To Chose? Opinions Sought 11 Mar 2007 (Forum)
so in my situation or as a second car/weekend car which would you choose? a, b or c? all based on the idea they are finished so all turbo/schargers are fitted and running right and reliabilty isn't a huge factor just enjoyability? cheers chris
  • Aging population as car buyers 4 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I just look at my dad for instance - hundred of thousands in the bank and he wont spend ten grand on a new car because he thinks its a waste of money, and hes not the only one I hear this from. He said his Astra estate ( which was given to him ), is practical and costs very little to run, plus it would be hard to replace these days with a new car that wasnt overly complicated and therefore likely to cost money if you kept it beyond warranty period. The only sort of vehicle he reckons is even close is one of the french vans with windows, but as a long term proposition, he would want japanese/korean, who dont offer such cars.
  • Diesel engine disaster 22 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Over the summer it went into the Ford dealer for repairs, them keeping the car for a few days on each visit and changing various electrical parts. I think it runs more smoothly now but still not quite right so last week it went into the service department again. On Friday they told me that all the sensors and controls are working properly but they think there has been a problem with contamination of the diesel system, due to either water or petrol getting into the diesel.
  • So would you buy and oldish diesel.... 26 Sep 2006 (Forum)
But what to get - 5-6 year old diesels are going to have 80k miles on them, and so will be up to or over 100k within a couple of years of my ownership. While I am aware that people on this forum do run diesels to high mileage, there is a clearly a higher risk when I take on a car from someone at 5-6 years old. Cars that float my boat are an A4 / A6 with the 2.5tdi engine, or a 330D - not only that, but they appear to have better reviews than comparable MB's at higher mileage.
  • how bright does a spark need to be? 23 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Odly, if I am lucky enough to catch the engine it fires and then revs lovely, but it wont start at all on auto choke(apart from the once in blue moon I happen to have pumped the mixture to a state it can catch) Is it possible that a totally sooted up set of plugs wont fire a cold engine with an over rich mixture, yet still be able to run smoothly once caught. I have tried 2 carbs now but not yet put in a new set of plugs. I am hoping that a second hand carb (set up right) with a set of healthy plugs could be the answer I need. I have tested all electrics (OK) and swapped 2 pierburb 1b carbs (i may have stuffed the settings on both) so I am thinking of getting yet another second hand carb and buy new plugs.
  • Tuning Diesel Methods (How ?)& Insurance 31 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Surely if it just increases amount of fuel injected, extra boost will be needed to provide the extra air required to burn the extra fuel, otherwise the engine will surely be running rich and emissions/smoke will greatly increase. I know some Co's claim they can modify the power characteristics depending on application eg. performance, economy or for towing, but how do theyir adjustments differ to suit each of these criteria ?
  • Audi A4 Tdi (90BHP) no boost & noisy 4 May 2006 (Forum)
I have looked in the haynes and it basically tells me nothing, it refers to the Boost Valve and a charge valve, are these the same thing. Any help would be great.......I need the car running by Friday so the old clock is ticking...
  • C5 HDI - Turbo pressure too high! 11 Mar 2006 (Forum)
He said yes, but thats whats broken and isnt available seperately. There has been a whining noise on over-run, best heard when stationary with the bonnet open, the noise has existed for a year and was queried twice while in warranty. The dealer has not yet asked Citroen about a goodwill payment (5 1/2 months out of warranty).
  • Help me to pick the right car this time 22 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I am undure what I would pick up part-ex - rear OS door has a dent in it which I have been quoted £600 to repair - but I have £1500 on top of what I will get in part-ex to purchese the right car this time. I know this is not the best way to run a car, and I am going to be losing heavily on the deal, but I think I will just have to put this one down as a lesson learnt. Your suggestions for suitable vehicles within this budget to look at would be great.
  • Sports car fun for a year! 12 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I can't afford to keep one indefinetly, so I am looking for a 'real' sports car that has nearly bottommed out in terms of depreciation so that my 12 months of fun won't cost me too dearly, taking into account depreciation and running costs. I reckon I'll put 12,000 miles on it. I'm open to opinions but I,m currently salivating over two cars at the moment: Car no.1 Porsche 911, 966 Carrera 4,(4wd) Tiptronic W plate, March 2000, 2 owners, silver, Black leather interior, Full Porsche history but dealer will service it with 'his' garage before sale.
  • Cannabis Candidate 27 Oct 2005 (Forum)
As we are crossing the junction a black Passat overtakes the line of traffic and swerves infront of me to avoid the temporary keep-left sign. He'd driven down the coned-off lane and run out of road. I'm very lucky to avoid both him and the kerb and give him a blast of the horn. His immediate reaction is to brake sharply whilst simultaneously waving his arms around and talking in sign language.
  • More Flexible Insurance 7 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I buy my cars from auction, run them for 2 or 3 months and then try to sell them in the hope that I can enjoy depreciation free motoring. I have managed this 4 times so far this year and my insurer has just told me they will stop the policy if I change my car again!
  • Mercedes E Class Rusting 96-02 Model 8 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Hello all, I have a Jan 1997 Mercedes E280, a fine car that runs great even with 99,200 on the clock. Has never required any repairs in 2 years of ownership. HOWEVER! As many Merc owners of this type will know there are rust problems. I have heard various reasons, like "its the streched steel construction" or "these were built in humid India" I have heard conflicting reports that Mercedes will repair rust damage and that these cars have a 30 year anti-perforation warranty.
  • Clio Engine Turns But Wont Fire 1 Jul 2005 (Forum)
My first thought was the immobiliser, but (a) the big round red dash light goes out every time as normal (it flashes rapidly if the key isn't recognised) and (b) the immobiliser wont allow the engine to turn when immobilised (I've checked). However, once the car starts there are no running problems at all, so it must be something that only affects starting. The garage can't find anything. Anyone got any ideas?
