classic car insurance abroad 6 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I'm not sure if this counts as a technical query, but it's certainly giving me grief... I live in France and I am trying to buy a classic car in the UK to bring over here. Importing it doesn't appear to be a problem but I want to insure it the way I insured my old cars in the UK, ie a straightforward classic car policy. Problem is, over here classic insurance seems to be dirt cheap but all you get is the equivalent of third party cover and no agreed valuation. -
Approved used cars - worth the extra cost? 17 May 2018 (Forum)
Hi, I wondered if I might be able to get some advice on buying a used car that is a couple of years old. I am looking to buy a used car for about 15k that is couple of years old and has less than 30k mileage, ideally it will have less than 20k. I have a thread on the make and model and have received some good advice – thank you. -
Peugeot 307 - Twist or stick? 9 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I have looked at Audi A4 cabriolets but my £10k will get me a 5 year old car with similar mileage (1.8T). I would go for petrol as the car will only do about 4k miles per year. Any other suggestions or advice welcome? (also, apologies for the length of the post!). Cheers, Rob -
Older car breakdown cover for Europe trip sought 14 Apr 2025 (Forum)
Just wondering if anyone can recommend breakdown cover for my 2008 Ford C-Max for holiday in Belgium? I've seen ETA Insurance cover older cars, but have no idea of their reputation. amny breakdown companies don't seem to cover cars over 15 years old. -
Mazda 5 - New car 9 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Got Mazda 5, 2013 has 52,000 miles. Nice car, runs well with sliding doors. Thought had it for 6 years. I’m spending quite a bit on petrol, thinking whether it’s time to change to a hybrid. Would it save petrol having a hybrid. I would probably look for a car, about two years old. -

The Car Shop - prices 2 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Has anyone had experience of this outfit. It is a large supermarket type place with cars mainly under three years old with branches across the country. Salesman claimed that the company did not actually own any of the cars displayed. My actual question is does this place haggle at all over the sticker price when there is no part exchange or finance deal involved?. -

Resurgence of interest in running a modern classic 18 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Recently Bobbin posted about running a classic alongside a newish every day car. How about a modern classic for an every day car? More and more buyers are shunning anodyne modern motors in favour of old cars updated to deal with modern driving. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/classiccars/8796564/Classic-cars-reborn.html -
car warranties 2 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Regarding the directive on new car gaurantees if I read the paper correctlly then second hand cars must also be given a 1 year warranty including private sales. This applies upto 4year old vehicles ,I have ordered the full directive to read fully .It may or may not have something to do with so called dealers passing themselves of as private sellers. -
What is Chelsmford Car Auctions like? 5 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I want to sell my car (2-3 year old low-mileage mondeo sedan) quickly and thought the auctions looked a good bet (British Car Auctions, Manheim Auctions, Chelmsford Car Auctions). There seems to be a huge difference in costs with Chelmsford looking very cheap. -

Road tax expiry 31 Jan 2010 (Forum)
A friend is taking delivery of a new car on 4th March. The current tax runs out at the end of February. If he 'forgets' to renew the VED on the old vehicle but trades it in on the 4th, will this be picked up by the DVLA? -

CAT C AND D SALVAGE EXPLAINED 22 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Firstly consider how badly damaged the vehicle must be to have such a high repair bill. Now think of the same car but when its 4 years old, the Pre Accident Value will be less than the repair bill, the price of the parts to repair or labor rate will not have dropped because the car is older. The same vehicle with the same damage will now be a cat C , make the same vehicle 6 years old and the insurance company will only sell it for parts, cat B. -

Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 100k in 3 years - good buy? 21 Dec 2009 (Forum)
First of all the long shot - does anybody out there have an inkling of which outfit runs / ran a fleet of such vehicles? Secondly, they were all priced around the £4k mark which struck me as quite reasonable for a 3y old example with 100k. Recent experience with mine and my wife's 10y+ old cars seems to suggest that it is age and neglect that kills cars far more that mileage. If a car has seen this intensity of use, I would expect the mileage to be mostly motorway miles and the cars to be mechanically pristine. -
Nightmare Altea 17 Jul 2006 (Forum)
This version of safe mode doesn't let you do 40 mph or anything near that, it maintains idle speed which is enough to ensure that brake and steering assistance is not lost. Despite 8 visits to the dealer and many different parts replaced the car has continued to fail and we estimate that we have had to make 15 emergency hard shoulder visits in the last year. Has anyone successfully rejected a 2 year old used car? I have little faith that the dealer is suddenly going to be able to fix the fault so I feel like there is little choice other than replace the car and let it be someone else? -
Volvo 440 18 Aug 2001 (Forum)
It will be parked outside. We are concerned about the safety aspect and potential running costs of an old banger - he has no knowledge of, or interest in car maintenance. We have heard from a very reputable garage (that we personally use) of a car as follows: Volvo 440 1993L 5 door 1.6i with FSH and 55Kmiles previously owned by elderly couple and serviced regularly at said garage.
