  • Pug 306TD Conrod Failure-Engine Change. 27 Nov 2007 (Forum)
All, had a, what would appear to be fairly common, conrod pop on my 98 'S' puggy. Have dropped another engine in, and having read the very good advice on this site, swapped the injector pumps to avoid the immobiliser problem. Engines all in, ready to go (minus coolant at the mo till i know it starts), and it turns, and nearly fires up on easy start, but wont go the final bit and start up.
  • Are you a "swaggering petrolhead" ? 21 Nov 2007 (Forum)
However, such questions do not disturb the intellectual certainty of Mr Monbiot. According to his article in Tuesday?s Guardian, critics of official policy, including road safety experts and serving police officers, are nothing more than ?swaggering petrolheads?. A case of "Please do not put facts in the way of my plan" ?
  • RTA-advice needed? 25 May 2007 (Forum)
Since I have not been involved in a situation like this I am not sure what the best thing is to do next. Obviously I want the car to be repaired to a good standard, at the taxi driver?s expense. I am concerned that if I don?t accept his offer of getting it repaired at ?his? garage there is a good chance that I won?t get any money out of him at all. However, I don?t want to accept his offer if the work is not carried out to a good standard as it will affect the value of my car.
  • Seat adjustment advice 4 Mar 2007 (Forum)
It may be just the car is too small, although in theory for cars 'one size fits all' it would be easier if I was only 5-7'' etc. The only car I remember that was similar was an original Mini back in the 80's where you always had a hunched driving position. Reason for all this is I have got some back pain between my shoulder blades, feels like my spine is seizing up (2 hours per day commute) and wanted to get it sorted.

Quote: "Following yesterday?s official launch of their 10-year initiative, Global Cool descended on Downing Street this afternoon to show Tony Blair and Environment Secretary David Miliband just what they?re about. Joining the Global Cool team as they presented to both MPs and business leaders were acclaimed singer/songwriter KT Tunstall and Hollywood actor Josh Hartnett, " Josh Hartnett was interviewed by the BBC this morning, the following is an e-mail that I have sent to Global Cool based on what he said: ___________ Hello, Firstly to say Global Cool is a great initiative, messages like switch the TV off at the wall etc are right on line.
  • Changing - Legacy to Outback 23 Oct 2006 (Forum)
When I described it as looking like a Legacy she looked again and said, ?Oh, we do have a Subaru Legacy Outback, but it?s a Japanese import. We will insure it if you fit a Tracker?. Now that, in effect, is a further expensive insurance premium add-on, initial fitting cost and annual payment. Total, £150.00 more that my original insurance, plus the costs of the Tracker.
  • The Avensis/Is220D engine 10 Jul 2006 (Forum)
At work I drive a variety of VW's (golf and passat in either TDI110/PD100/PD130 flavour) and so this is what I would be comparing with. Although the golf PD105's, for example, are much slower on paper, I found they felt alot quicker as they seemed to pull alot stronger straight from idle, but where the PD100 starts to get flat the IS220d really picked up strong.

  • Tyre speed rating surprise 28 Jun 2005 (Forum)
In simplified terms, the rating is obtained by increasing speed in 10kph increments, each for ten minutes duration, until the tyre starts to fail. Tyre Speed rating table (Rating / kph / mph) S 180 / 112 T 190 / 118 U 200 / 124 H 210 / 131 V 240 / 149 W 270 / 167 Y 300 / 186 VR 210+ / 130+ ZR 240+ / 150+ Now imagine a Pirelli P6000, this being a tyre widely considered to be run of the mill; it is factory fitted in huge quantities to 'family' and 'executive' cars the world over and is specified as a replacement by many a leasco.
  • Another bad VW dealer story 4 Jun 2005 (Forum)
After a short drive and a couple of minutes pushing on the front struts I traced the knock to a worn bottom joint on the N/S drop link. I wrote this down for them to take and show to the dealer. I really do find this kind of poor service (putting it politely) absolutely disgusting. We all have to make a living, but the service manager at this particular dealership obviously saw this couple (both about 80) as a soft touch.
  • Admitting Liability 11 May 2005 (Forum)
In short she pulled out of a junction as the traffic was stopped waiting for the lights to change she crept forward onto a keep clear patch (to allow space for people to emerge from that junction!) someone came charging down the outside lane (a right hand filter lane) and clipped her(my) car o/s bumper. This span her car onto another car waiting patiently in the traffic queue at the lights (waiting to go straight on). Anyways its pretty clear (to me) that it was not her fault as she was slowly moving into a keep clear space to turn left to join the right hand filter traffic lane and that the other guy was racing to 'beat the lights' and did not see her emerging to that lane (the lights were changing to amber).
  • New discs & pads for PUG 205 GTi 30 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I have been toying with the idea of replacing the pads and disks on my PUG. From the S/H I gather that the discs are genuine and have covered some 65k (genuine!) miles from new, while the pads were last replaced @ 35k. By reading through the forums here (and not wishing to re-hash old topics) and my own 'real life' driving experience, I accept that the PUG doesn't have the best of brakes.
  • Should I exchange my new Toyota? 15 Feb 2005 (Forum)
We have been sold such a car in the past without knowing it so were cautious this time. She promised us the car was from Toyota and had probably been a rep?s car. The V5 confirmed the previous owner as Toyota GB. When I got home on Friday with the car I found a Hertz document referring to my car (reg number) along with a date of hire. Pretty clear evidence that it was previously a hire vehicle.
  • Unsprung Weight theory 12 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I bought a Ford Special (kit car) as an uncompleted project in about 1965. It had a lightweight fibreglass body mounted on a 1930's Ford 8 chassis and suspension. The suspension comprised two transverse leaf springs, one front and one rear, and it had feeble lever-type dampers. The springs each had seven leaves which made them too stiff for this now-lightweight car so I took out three leaves from the front and four from the rear.
  • Car keys 18 Oct 2003 (Forum)
It soon became obvious that I would have to accept an alternative - a locksmith would come, pick the door lock and re-program the car\'s electronics to accept an ignition key that he would provide. Apart from not having my spare key, I didn\'t have my car pass information with me either i.e. No number to program the new key. A phone call to a neighbour with a key to my house, however, sorted that out.
  • which fuel (petrol) 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I'm sure this topic appears in other threads, but was brought to mind when reading the recent 'which diesel fuel' thread. This is a tale starting 10 years ago, so things may well be different/better now, but it?s absolutely true and with no exaggeration: I had an Uno Turbo which over time developed a misfire. It was just about tolerable (to me, but maybe not to many people), but still not cured, when fitted with the expensive 3-prong sparkplugs this model was supposed to have.
  • 344bhp - Oh My Gawd! 22 Jul 2003 (Forum)

  • Cutting congestion 26 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Why then, do so many of my neighbours choose to drive EVERYWHERE ? Despite having lived here since the mid 80's, there are certain inhabitants who I've hardly ever seen on their 2 feet. Why is this ? Don't get me wrong, for a trip to the supermarket I take my car and for longer/inconvenient journeys I use it too.
  • Number Plates 2 Apr 2003 (Forum)
\" \"Er no, but the cars outside\" (smug smile now gone!) \"The laws changed and we need to see some ID as well as the V5\" \"Thinks \" I know the law\'s changed thats why I\'ve brought my V5!\" \"Well we will need to see something, here have a leaflet it explains everything on it\" Walks out of shop goes home and gets the requisit bits of paper and returns. ( severe sulk on!)
