VW Golf - Proof of ownership problem 21 Sep 2021 (Forum)
Her partner has now left and she needs to sell the car which is currently SORN. She vas the V5C but it is in the name of her partner. She could get a backdated letter from the friend who gave it to her saying something like "Dear Tracy, please accept this car registration xyz.999 as a gift" Would this work as proof of ownwership or is there a better way of doing things so she can sell it. -
Newer sporty car / convertible.... with towbar 5 Apr 2021 (Forum)
It seems a lot of sporty cars are no longer homologated? for towbars and there's no towing weight on V5c then you should not fit one even if you can. I don't really want an SUV or Ford Ranger etc. -
Any - Buying a car from deceased estate 3 Feb 2021 (Forum)
I've found advise on how to proceed as a seller of a deceased relative's car but nothing from the buyer's perspective. If I get the v5c/2 and the car is free of finance , have i any other concerns ? The car is advertised for £18k. Thanks -
Any - Tell DVLA you've sold a vehicle 21 Nov 2017 (Forum)
However, I've noticed there is a page on the DVLA website that you can use to notify them online: https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle It says "You can’t use this service if you’ve already sent your log book (V5C) by post." so I assume you shouldn't post in the section at all if you use the website. Does this automatically trigger a refund of the unused part of the vehicle tax, or do you need to claim that separately? -
Insuring a car 20 Apr 2014 (Forum)
The car must be insured. Would buying insurance give a wrong impression that I have accepted the car? - When the V5C comes through the post, should I return it to DVLA with an explanatory letter? Thanks -
Skoda Yeti - Notifying DVLA of sale to trader 20 Jun 2024 (Forum)
Obviosuly I’ll make sure payment is taken prior to them taking the car but should I give them them V5C and then notify online tomorrow morning or should I do it the old way and complete yellow section 4 and keep that and post it off, rather than doing it online? Thank you Jay -
BMW 7 Series - UK car bought at an auction in Belgium 13 Jul 2023 (Forum)
The car had no paper present (no conformity certificate, no logbook, ..) but I learned it was a UK car before, registered in the UK. Do you know how I could get for example a copy of the V5C logbook of the car and the conformity certificate ? Is it possible while residing outside of the UK ? I've seen it's possible to ask it online at the DVLA but apparently you must have a UK address... -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 15-10-2016 Part 1 22 Oct 2016 (Forum)
Local Toyota Dealer is quoting £1200 to replace ECU, & Locks. Why do Toyota Dealers not order New (Factory) key, on production of V5C, if necessary, and as a matter of course ?. If I could get a Factory Key, a local auto locksmith would program it for £40 !. -
Mazda cx3 - SJPN 26 Mar 2024 (Forum)
I have basically the same situation as this poster (https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=174646#m1433014), only the reason I didn't receive the NIP is because I forgot to update the v5c Log book with my new address - I only updated on my drivers license. Consequently, when I had a speeding offence 6 months ago, the NIP was sent to an old address. I am now charged with failure to respond (they managed to find my correct address for to send the SJPN (presumably from my drivers licenc and car tax etc... - What is my best option in order to avoid the 600 fine and increase in insurance premiums? -
Any - Vehicle registration - how long? 11 Apr 2023 (Forum)
Basically, I think I drove in a bus lane by accident when it was in operation on the same week I got the car. However, the dealership had sent off the V5C form to officially register me I think and then I received it about 7-10 days later. So my question is if I did mess up at any point after I purchased would the council (or Tfl) know where to send me the letter (fine)? -
Anything you've had for years. - SORN system shenannigans and failure. 22 Dec 2022 (Forum)
Phoned DVLA again, got helpful chap who after he'd done some looking explained that "the old type log book will not work with the automated system!" (it's a V5C from 7/09), so he SORN'd it and said he'sd send me a new log book! So, if you try to SORN something that you have had for years, and your "vehicle is not found", that could be why. -

Phoning the DVLA 25 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I traded my Picasso in 2 weeks ago & sent the yellow part of the V5C off to the DVLA (by recorded delivery !) to notify them of the change of ownnership. They say to allow 4 weeks for them to send conformation that they have received it and have ammended their records, but as i hadn't heard from them & am about to go on holiday i thought i would phone and check that it had been done. -
Ford Focus RDS 5000 VIN Number Storage 16 Jan 2006 (Forum)
After following the instructions in the Ford Audio Guide supplied with the car, I have discovered that the VIN on my V5C & VIN Plate is 17 characters in length, and the RDS 5000 only has a 16 character memory, 16 also being the max. length stated in the Audio Guide. Am I missing something simple, or is there no way to store the full VIN on the radio, making this useful security feature a waste of time? -

Hello everyone,I'm hoping someone could help me,I've received a PCN for driving in a ULEZ zone and I want to appeal as my car is compliant,it's a 2017 diesel but my problem is it says when going to appeal to provide evidence but on my V5C certificate the EURO category of my car is not stated I've checked online and it's 6b I've driven on this same road that I got the fine on for more than 6months with no issues same in other parts of central London and never got a fine to say I was shocked would be an understatement.Does anyone know what would be deemed acceptable for them as proof that my car is compliant. -
Bought used car didnt received V5 1 Jun 2021 (Forum)
Hi I bought used VW Golf in April from car dealer not private seller and still haven't received V5C document. So I filled out and sended V62 form and I added New Keeper green slip. But problem is I forgotten to actually fill out green slip. So new keeper details were blank. Of course I put all details in V62 form but is there gonna be problem because green slip was blank? -
Vehicle check question 8 Feb 2016 (Forum)
As the vehicle is 250 miles away with a dealer (I plan on going Tuesday). Do I go there and inspect the VIN printed on the V5C to the VIN on the vehicle? Which I would have done regardless as part of my check. Quote: Finance agreement recorded They have provided the details so I will ring tomorrow (in a few hours) to confirm if settled in full and if so confirm by email. -

If you look to the right you'll see a link to a story about a specialist national police unit set up to counteract vehicle crime: "Stolen V5C etc". {here's the link as it won't stay on the RH side of your screen forever:- http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/item.htm?id=6023 } The story says that the unit has recovered 1200 stolen cars since it was set up in December 2006. -
SEAT Leon ST - Dealer forgot to register the car in my name 29 Jul 2021 (Forum)
Fast forward 18 months and rather embarrassing I've discovered the vehicle has been untaxed for a year. Furthermore I've discovered via the DVLA that the last v5c issued was when the car was registered in 2016, hence why I've not received any tax reminders in the post. For whatever reason I've at some point genuinely thought I set up a direct debit, clearly not. -
Car ownership change - Disgraceful shameful DVLA scam 8 Nov 2019 (Forum)
Being aware of the 'two months tax for one month's ownership' scam which we are attempting to avoid, on 31st Oct went online to change Focus ownership from MrsF to son, who was temporarily with us until he found somewhere to live. New V5C arrived today so went on line to retax. Told '....expired on 1st Oct... (a lie - it was taxed for a year in Aug) ....can apply from 1Nov but it is an offence to be the keeper of a vehicle that is untaxed and does not have a SORN.....
