  • Fuzz Townshend's classic car maintenance tips: How to check your tyres 29 Jun 2017 (Forum)
I need to find out where all these "100% scrap" (but 100% legal) 10 year old Porsche tyres are dumped. Could be a major contribution to road safety.
  • The longest you have kept a car from new? 15 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I can't claim any records in this respect but a neighbour of mine has had her little old Ford in almost daily local use since 1983 ('A' prefix). Who,...
  • Pop-up trafficators - MOT? 1 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Those of you of a certain age will remember the pop-up arms usually situated at the top of the 'B' post instead of conventional indicators on some old cars. Will a car fitted with these still pass an MOT today or do flashing indicators need to be fitted? Thanks in advance.
  • VW Passat 130 First Service 29 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I have just booked my car in for its service at a vag dealer in Glasgow. Going to cost me £220 including vat (longlife service). Is this a reasonable price for a first service. Car is 18 months old with 16000 miles.
  • Best seats?? 25 Oct 2005 (Forum)
What in anyones opinion are the best seats ever put into a mass produced car?? (That can still be purchased and used day to day today e.g no 30 year old renaults) The swedish and french cars all seem to get good reviews. Is it wise to steer clear of german seats?

  • Independant Honda servicing 2 Mar 2005 (Forum)

  • Diesel to Hybrid SUV Choices 2 Sep 2021 (Forum)
I have recently reduced the number of miles I do annually and have been thinking about changing my car, even though I am not under any pressure to.  I have had my faultless CRV for a couple of years and am considering changing to a hybrid.  Reliability and cost are the 2 most important things and I have looked at: RAV4 Excel Hybrid CR-V EX Hybrid Both cars are under a year old so have taken most of the initial depreciation hit and are similar specs.
  • Volkswagen Golf V - Golf MkV - How long can I expect it to last? 17 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Hi, Need a used car at around £5000 and although I was never looking at a Golf my local dealer has offered me a choice of 2. It's the right size for what we need but I had thought about getting a 3-4 year old Citroen C3 Picasso, instead of an 8 year old Golf.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 07 1.6 Windscreen washer sediment 21 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I've been playing with cars for over 40 years, and never had this problem before. I admit that over the years I have rarely added any washer additive, but why should I suddenly get this problem with a 2 year old car? In future I will try to remember to use an additive that will hopefully keep the system clean.
  • Honda Civic UK (2001 - 2005) - 2002 1.6 Gearbox Noise - Input shaft bearing? 18 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Growling noise just audiable in 1st and 2nd at the moment and only when moving off Any point going to Honda? Car owned from new, 45000 miles, has FSH and is just over 6 years old Do I need to get this sorted pronto or can I push it on a bit? (really skint at moment) Really gets my goat as I think a gearbox should realisitcally last the life of the car My 27 year old VW camper has done 105000 miles and is still on original 'box!!

  • Insurance help needed 26 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I've had a Toyota Starlet and just bought a Volvo S40, called my insurance to change the vehicle on the policy and they're asking me to pay additional £509 for the remaining 6 months. Whereas I've rung other companies, including MoreThan with whom I've got another car covered and they've quoted me £539 for the whole year. What shall i do? Shall I just get a new policy with someone else and let the old policy on the old car until it expires or shall I call my current insurance company and ask them to cancel it?
  • Dealer rip off or common sense ? 22 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Thinking about my recent thread on BiL's 330d (my old car). When I had the car all servicing was done by the book and the tab picked up by the lease company. Now it's in private hands BiL has carried on the credo of FDSH down to the recent coolant and brake fluid (he's a flyer so a bit....well you know).

  • Advice wanted on selling 6 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I hope someone here can help me - I got lots of advice when I posted a question about buying my first car. My Dad died recently, and since my mum doesn't drive, we need to sell his car. Mum doesn't want to advesrtise it, and have people phoning up, and wanting test drives etc. It's a 9 year old Carina, so we know it won't be worth very much, but we don't want to be completely ripped off either.
  • Expensive or cheap service 2 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I am a bit worried about going for the cheaper option as it means the plugs will not be changed until the car is 5yrs old. Any opinions - am I about to be ripped off - it is currently booked in for the 40k. Thanks
  • BMW V MB v Rover 10 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Ideally it should not be more than 4 years old and 60,000 miles. I know these cars aren't cheap to run but something of this ilk wouldn't be too bad on the pocket. I only do about 11,000m/yr so a two year old, 40,000 miler wouldn't be so bad as I'm planning to keep it for at least four years.
