Ford escort 1.4 CVH carb problems 20 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Just had my oil and filter changed at national tyres. The t*** who did it overfilled it by 1/2 cm on the dipstick! I then just thought it had spilled out somewhere over the engine. On closer inspection it seems oil has managed to get up into the air filter. -
BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 30K since last Service - no oil change please it's 16 Oct 2007 (Forum)
When phoned to tell him the mis-firing had been fixed with plugs + coil the owner did not want the car serviced as apart from the mis-firing it was going well!! Not even an oil & filter change - £30 worth of materials & labour. The mis-firing was £100+ VAT - the coil must be the expensive bit as there was only 45 mins or so between start & finish of the work. In true BMW style the owner had arrived with dipped headlights + spot lights on at 8:30 {And in true BR style, within 24 hrs of the last mention of lighting abuse, it gets yet another one ;0) - DD} Anyone want to buy a 318, Silver, 3yrs old, 1 careless owner........................ -
Oil Specification & viscosity Info. 1 Aug 2005 (Forum)
and your Owners Handbook is a very good place to start as it lists the temperatures and options. Oils thicken at low temperatures and thin as the temperature increases. The actual rate of change is indicated by their viscosity index (this number normally listed on the oils technical data sheet indicates the degree of change in viscosity of an oil within a temperature range, currently 40-100 degrees centigrade) An oil with a high viscosity index, will normally behave similarly at these two temperatures but an oil with a low viscosity index will behave quite differently. -
Peugeot 207 1.4i (07) - Engine rattle after oil top up 4 Jan 2016 (Forum)
I sought a second opinion who said their is a small injector or pump to fire the oil to the top of the engine and the wrong oil will seize it hence the rattle, tho can't be sure until he get the car and checks. He would change the timing chain etc at the same time as well as the damaged part. -
Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 05 1.8 Recommended oil & timing chain noise. 29 Nov 2009 (Forum)
My 30,000 mile 05 1.8 petrol Almera has always been serviced by a Nissan dealer using 0w-30 Elf or Total oil (French) I have noticed on some cold starts, especially if not used for a day - that the timing chain is making its presence heard for a few seconds and although the car is no-way due for a service I think I'll change the oil anyway - just to be on the 'safe side' So. the question is - what is the best oil to use for max protection on cold starts? -
Car Service Due at 70k. help/tips/advice 23 May 2005 (Forum)
I had always been serviced upto 50k (with a stamp) I know he has maintained the car, but i dont know to what extent and how much work has been done, how many oil changes. He done stuff like a new exahust and new radiator and new battery. I purchased some new sparks, and have got the oil filter and air filter, and probaly a fuel filter. He has told me that the majour service is due, belt change (getting done on Thursday) but im thinking its been servied upto 50k with stamps and i reckon he may have carried out the work, so why not flush the engine when doing the oil change to be on the safe side. -
Merc A160 - Mega Mayo! 19 Oct 2014 (Forum)
What's the best way of removing said gunge during an oil change? My thoughts were just to put several doses of engine flush through, but will that do the trick? -
Skoda Fabia (2000 - 2007) - 03 1.2 How do you switch off the service reminder? 10 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Hello. My wife has a Soda Silverline estate. which was recently serviced. Before it was due the Oil plus the little spanner appeared. It has now reappeared. I have checked the oil level and it is fine. Short of trying to find a garage is there anyway it can be switched off. When this happened before the Skoda dealer said that it only meant a change of oil was needed. -
Focus 02 1.6 oil filter sizes? 22 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Hello, I changed the oil and filter on my mother-in-law's 02 Focus 1.6 auto recently, when I bought the filter I was told that there are two that fit, one slightly longer than the other, no recomendation for one over the other. -

Bit confuesd about topping up as the car came with a litre of shell helix ultra 5/30w but it doesnt match the spec (vw 506.01)listed in owners manual (realised other day) but had already used it up at last top up. If your supposed to top up with vw506.01 why the hell do vw supply the shell stuff with the car ??? -
Audi A3 Sportback,1.6 petrol, 2010 - Front shock absorbers, what type 28 Jun 2023 (Forum)
Hello, I'm about to change my front shock absorbers. I changed rear couple weeks ago. I called a couple of car part shops and everyone comes with gas filled shocks... I never fitted front ones and I'm not aware about front shock types (for my car) I thought it's has to be oil filled shocks as rear ones i fitted.. -
Most common causes of scrapping a car these days? 1 Oct 2021 (Forum)
I've been doing bangernomics for a while, and have presided over the demise of five cars now, and not one of them was scrapped due to 'piston ring wear' - which is what everyone tells me you need to get the oil changed to prevent, so I'm thinking why bother changing the oil? 2 of them were head gasket going 2 of them were due to needing a large number of consumables replacing at same time to pass MOT, so was cheaper to buy another sub £1000 car to replace it. -
Rover 75 - Rover 75 and bmw 320 diesels 23 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Much has been said about oil-change intervals and vehicle inspections, but I see no mention of the crankcase breather system. My 75 with the BMW 2.00l diesel entered Bristol last week followed by a billow of blue smoke and a good smothering of oil in the engine bay. -
Citroen Xsara Picasso (2007) - Citroen Picasso Injector error 22 Jun 2015 (Forum)
My 2007 Picasso has done 120,000 miles. Every couple of months there is a problem with the oil. The mechanic says that due to the injectors possibly being faulty the oil container gets blocked and he needs to drain it and pour down some chemicals to unblock it each time. He says if the injectors are checked, and the faulty ones replaced, it should solve the problem. -
VW Golf R32 - Rear Differential Collapse 5 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Prior to the failure there was a high pitched background noise which I had not noticed before. Could something to do with the Haldex coupling oil change have caused the rear diferential failure? My Main Dealer is seeking a good will contribution from VW towards the cost of the repair. -
Audi A6 - Gearbox ECU 10 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I am now told by the dealership that the gearbox ECU is faulty and needs replacing. It seems to me that the dealership damaged the ECU when they did the gearbox oil change. I have no idea how I can prove if this is the case or not. Any advice please. -
Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 1996, 1.4 - Engine flush? 19 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Bought oil and filter for an oil change which I will be doing over the Easter weekend. I was given a free bottle of Wynn's engine flush. Never used this stuff before. Is flushing an engine before a change a good idea? -
Honda Gold wing 1200 21 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I appear to have swopped a few redundant paving slabs for a service. I have tried the goldwing clubs, but none appear to give free details away. OK with oil,oil filter, air filter and coolant changes, but would like some info on timing belt changes and whether it is an "interference" engine. Any idea of valve clearances, and whether hot or cold I really don't want to buy a manual and then give it away, as this would cost more than the slabs Not helped by the fact that the rear wheel has been replaced by a Scorpion back end!! -
Escort 1.3 HCS "chugging" 6 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I have a 1989 1.3 HCS which I serviced a couple of weeks ago. New plugs, oil filter, oil change (magnatec gtx). Did clean the hoses to the air filter which were clogged up which in hindsight (what a wonderful thing) probably caused the problem? Since then it has been chugging when it gets to temperature - loses power from accelerator and idles erratically. -
Service Intervals 21 Jun 2001 (Forum)
I bought a '92 518, 65k in January, had just been serviced with five green lights on the service indicator. Now 5 months and 6k later I've got two lights left and no sign of an oil change indicator light on. Recognising the importance of frequent oil changes can anyone tell me whether I can rely on the indicator to tell me, or should I stick to my own intervals of 6months/6k?
