Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2002 1.8 TDDI whistling away 6 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi, my trusty 90HP focus has started whistling, and its only just run in @ 144K. Only happens under load, with a rise to the note up to 2000 RPM, then it levels off at that note to the redline, does kind of warble a bit sometimes mind. Performance doesn't seem any worse (and yes I do like to "make progress"...), but with regular trips to London or Wales at the weekends from Notts I don't want it to let go way from home (or ever for that matter). -
Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 01 1.9 Thumping noise 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)
If I remove a vacum pipe (situated drivers side at the front) the noise stops. The noise is not present until the car has been running for some time and not at all before the engine has warmed up fully. When I first noticed it I spoke to a mechanic who said it was a valve of some sort and not to worry, he also stated that he had replaced a 'valve' on another VW only for the noise to return six months later. -
Jaguar S-Type (1999 - 2007) - S-type - good deal? 16 Jun 2008 (Forum)
This car is basically very similar to a new XF, with is 34k. It seems a lot of car for the money - hardly run in and 14k less than what I would need to pay for the equivalent new. Now, obviously this car is a previous model, so will date. The question is, has it already taken most of the hit for this and am I picking up a great car very cheaply because it isn't trendy, or would I be in for a shock when its value drops like a stone?? -
Peugeot - 1990 2.5DT J5 vacuum pump question 9 Jun 2008 (Forum)
ve done the pump test on the brake pedal and it does move down a few inches on startup (so to me it?s not a servo issue). However when the engine is running and I put my finger over the pipe coming from the vacuum pump it has very little ?suck? ? even if I rev it. I think it?s probably a poor vacuum pump, however can anybody tell me if the pump should actually produce a good vacuum, on mine it? -
Mazda 626 (1987 - 1991) - Why is my fuel consumption so good? 6 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Is there anyone else out there whose fuel consumption has exceeded expectations...all I have read about to date are BRs whose consumption has been disappointing. The car runs exclusively on Shell (I dont think this makes a difference, but its cleaning qualities were recommended) and has new Michelin Energy tyres fitted. -
FIAT Cinquecento (1993 - 1998) - 97 1.0 Stuttering Cinquecento Sporting 16 May 2008 (Forum)
When joining a main road it is necessary to slip the clutch seriously in order to keep the revs up, just to stop it stalling. We recently had to have a new clutch. The car has been on some longer runs to ?burn off? any gunk in the system, but it makes no difference. Our local garage has been unable to find anything wrong. Everything to do with the fuel system has been cleaned. It might be sensible to get something newer but I hate to throw a good car away for what should be a soluble problem. -
More VED talk 7 May 2008 (Forum)
Has anybody else noticed how most colleagues / friends have no idea there family vehicles are going to cost more to tax in many cases. I run 2 cars on a strict budget. Neccesity means i buy 6 months tax each time. In an age where most people pay there insurance monthly, possibly buy the car and pay monthly, the need to buy a tax disc once the rises impact out of ones spare cash in a single month is going to be increasingly difficult. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 96 1.25 LX Problems in starting car 26 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Itll then take a couple of go's, like 10-15 seconds of trying and sure enough shell start up fine and run fine. Rang my mechanic today and he said to try my spare key as the chip might have gone in the other one, but that didnt work. I don't think its the battery since it wouldnt start at all if it was? -
Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 02 diesel no power or acceleration 12 Apr 2008 (Forum)
After waiting three weeks they phoned to tell me the diagnostics could not find a fault and it was still not running properly. They said it could be dirt in the fuel system and said they cleaned out the tank and fuel system. After that hadn't made any difference they then said it could be the micro filters in the injectors and they would need replaced costing at least £1000 on top of the £700 pounds they charged for the injector pump to be reconditioned. -
Accident waiting to happen - it just did 12 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Well today I passed the scene of an accident that must have happened about 5 minutes after he passed me. He had clearly run into the back of someone. Both cars looked slightly crumpled. He and the other driver were standing, unhurt. A few minutes on I passed an ambulance, and then a police car, with lights on, presumably going to the scene. -
Vauxhall Meriva A MPV (2003 - ) - 2004 1.7 cdti Brake constantly squealing 11 Apr 2008 (Forum)
The handbrake seems to operate as it should - no change in behaviour. MPG doesn't seem to be suffering, and the car doesn't pull when braking. After a 10 mile run on the motorway last night, the wheel and brake disc were very hot, and the others were cold. There is friction somewhere. A sticking caliper ? Handbrake not releasing properly ? Does this model have a separate drum brake for the handbrake, or is the existing pad and disc used ? -
Isuzu - NQR lorry - Sparks from battery when starting 21 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Starter relay? Really grateful for any ideas as it's too big to tow and I'm a bit stuck if I can't get it running... Thanks! -
Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - oil overfill 3 Mar 2008 (Forum)
The car has done some mileage since (in the order of 700 miles, about 500 of which are mine). There are no leaks or anything unusual so far. It drives well. Fuel consumption on the long run was as expected. I wonder, if the overfill had caused a problem, would it be noticeable by now? Should I request the dealership to check the exhaust gas is up to MOT standards, in case damage to the cat has been done? -
Rover 200 (1995 - 1999) - 1997 214 - Clutch has gone funny!! 7 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Biting point is right at the bottom of travel - it used to be 1/2- 3/4 way up. You hardly have to move your foot before it takes up drive!! Its girlfriends run around and she has just called to say that shes struggling to change gear. Any ideas what it might be? I thought that the clutch was biting a bit high before and now its gone right to the bottom of travel in about 10 miles. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1997 TD - starting problems 20 Dec 2007 (Forum)
My car has been running fine for over a year, however over the last couple of weeks when i turn the ignition on the glow plug light did not come on, all the other lighs on the dash were on. tried to turn the engine over but nothing. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1999 1.9 diesel estate. Cold starting problem. 17 Dec 2007 (Forum)
After a few tries I sometimes go in the house and come out five mins later and try again and eventually get it going but it takes quite a few attempts before it's running. I took it to one garage and they put in new oil and a new starter motor. A few weeks later I went to another garage and they put in a new fuel pump idle control valve which cost about £20 plus labour. -
Your commute - plan it on public transport 12 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Currently I work about 18 miles from home, and the road is a glorious old one that nobody else seems to use (it runs parallell to the motorway so perhaps they are all on that). It costs me about 11p per mile (very rough - £60 gets me about 530 miles) in fuel. So my current journey costs me about £2 each way, and takes about 25 minutes. -
Volvo V50 vs Honda CRV (New or Nearly New?) 30 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Am still torn between the two, and am just looking for general advise on either car, and information with regards to buying (best price) and possible running cost guidance? Thanks in advance for your help. Nathan -
Vauxhall Frontera (1991 - 2001) - Has my car really been serviced? 16 Nov 2007 (Forum)
On the way home the car felt 'slightly' different due to the tracking but usually i'd expect it to run more smoothly after having new oil, plugs & filters but it didn't. I lifted the bonnet and nothing looked like it had been touched. The oil filter, for example, didn't look any cleaner than anything else under the bonnet even though it should have been brand new. -
Honda Prelude (1983 - 1992) - Idling speed reduced and lumpy 27 Sep 2007 (Forum)
He apologised for not having exhaust gas analyser but they don't carry them. The carb controls all seem to be free, nothing sticking as far as I know. Engine seems to run fine through rest of the range. If someone knowledgeable could give me a few pointers as to what to look for next I'd be most grateful. When I got back to london (in a tight parking space), I could smell dreadful exhaust fumes in the car and underneath but the parking space may have caused this.
