Rover 214SLI K reg 5 Dec 2004 (Forum)
During the last oil change, the drain plug proved difficult to remove and I found that the threads had stripped or x-threaded. I have made a temporary repair but another oil change is due soon. Is there a repair scheme for this problem, do I need a new sump or will a suction pump suffice. -
Any - HJ's expensive unnecessary advice-Sat Telegraph 8 Oct 2014 (Forum)
He's still at it. Yet again, 'all engines....need an annual oil change' .!!!!! I do wonder if HJ is subsidised by the oil industry. Does anyone with even basic physics/chemistry qualifications [that's pre-uni A-level, by the way] seriously think that great aunt Minnie's Ford Fociesta needs an oil change after 3,000 miles and 365 days of twice weekly trips to the shops and the occasional social drive? -
1997 Saxo 1.5 Diesel 14 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Is there anything that would be done other then oil / filter? Is the car at the stage that I just do the oil changes and deal with any problems as and when they happen, as opposed to doing "preventative" servicing? Hope this makes sense? -
Oil sump drain plug 6 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Its been many years since I have changed oil on a car & have decided to take HJ's advice and go for a 5k change between services on my 1.6 Megane. Although I can see the drain plug and could undo it without having to use ramps (sloping drive and basically scared of ramps) I'm having trouble worning out what size key to use. -
Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI 55 plate - oil pressure 13 May 2010 (Forum)
the engine emits a clattering from the top followed by oil pressure light despite two services and an oil flush in the last 1000 miles. There has been evidence of oily deposits blocking the oil pick up pipe in the sump and despite oil changes and a flush this has reoccured after 0nly 300 miles this time. where could these deposits be coming from, the oil feeds to the turbo are clear, and how can i rectify this problem? -
Ford oils 27 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I have been to a RapidFit (Ford) garage to see about an oil change for my Rover 420SLDi Turbo. They recommend their 15/40 oil which appears to be a mineral oil, their 10/40 also seems to be a mineral oil and only their 5/30 is semi-synthetic. Rover recommend 15/40 or 10/40 to PD2 standard. -
OIl sludge 7 Jan 2001 (Forum)
My 95 ford fiesta 1.1LX appears to use a lot of oil, I can see no leaks, it does not appear to burn any oil but it does have a oil sludge problem, it is reguarly serviced and doesnt do short runs. I have changed the oil filler/breather cap (i.e. crankcase ventilation) to solve the sludge problem but this hasn't made any difference. -

audi 100 air filter 13 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I've recently added an old audi 100 to the 'fleet'. I thought I would change the plugs but could only get 4, so I decided to change the air filter instead. When I removed the old one it was covered in oil, any ideas? I cant see any obvious areas of oil leakinkg under the bonnet. -
Volkswagen Polo IV - Oil Pressure Problem 19 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Got a VW polo 2002-2005 model, 1.2 petrol engine, chain driven oil pump and the car has covered 70k miles. Was driving along and the oil pressure warning light came on, along with quite a large loss of power having to rev it more than usual. So far, I've done the obvious things; changed the oil and filter and changed the oil pressure switch which made no difference and didn't put out the light. -
BMW E39 535i (1998) - BMW E39 automatic problem - oil? 21 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Hello, 101k miles on 1998 535i, serviced 2 months ago by an independent. He said he'd changed the gear oil as well as a fairly major service to get the car back on the road. He told me that I'd probably find the gear changes in the auto box a bit jerky at first but if it didn't settle then I could take it back to 'get the gear oil topped up'. -
Is it normal for a MINI to use a litre of oil every 10k miles? 5 Aug 2014 (Ask HJ)

FocusFocus - Mixing Anti-Freeze with sump oil 28 Oct 2013 (Forum)
In needed to top up my 4.5 litre sump with oil and managed to pick the wrong container and put in about a mugfull of antifreeze. Shall I drive it to my nearest dealer (6 Miles) and have the oil changed or drive normally and hope it dissipates in normal running? -
VAG PD Engines. - Petronas Oils - Anyone Used It? 26 Apr 2013 (Forum)
I notice that Eurocarparts are offering 25% of oil until 30th April using a promocode. I see that they supply Petronas Synthium 5000AV that is specced at VW507 which with the discount is just £24.25 for 4 litres. Has anyone used it? was thinking of stocking up for the next oil change in the autumn. -
Toyota Carina E 2.0i - Oil on spark plug (top thread) 30 Jan 2011 (Forum)
On changing the plugs on my Carina E, I found that there was some oil on the top of the plug. There is no oil on the tip however, where it seems to be burning nicely. Can someone suggest as to what might be causing this? -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 5w-30 synthetic oil 23 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I have seen Havoline 5w-30 synthetic oil which conforms to Ford spec (WSS-M2C913-B) £15 for 5 litres.Apart from the financial gain would this be an improvement on Fords recommended semi-synthetic.I change my oil and filter every 6 months. -

Which oil - semi or fully 1 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Is fully sythetic the oil of choice, or is a semi more than adequate for most cars? For instance looking a Esso products: http://www.esso.com/eaff/essoireland/products/mn_lubricants.html Would it be worth using Mobil 1 in the oil change, or Esso Ultron Semi Syth? -
Marea maintanence 15 Dec 2002 (Forum)
This seems a bargain. To ensure that i get my value for money, i am sticking to basic rules such as oil change every 6 months, regular wash and wax etc. I have booked the car in for a oil change and brake fluid change at halfords, and also asked for a power steering fluid change, I was sure that i read someware that this was good practice ( the car has now done 27,000), but was told by halfords that there is no need to change, there is no drain point, and to drain would involve breaking the curcuit, and therefore a replacement part would be needed - is this true? -
Diesel and heating oil 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
(it doesn't have any). It says on the burner to use No.1 heating oil. I don't use it often, but have nearly run out of oil. I recently changed the filter and cleaned the burner, but need more oil. So, can I use diesel instead of No.1 heating oil? That way I can just buy a little as and when.
