  • 1.8 Golf MkIII - Revs drop on idle and loss of power, not when cold 3 Dec 2011 (Forum)
It's been into a garage twice and had an air leak sorted and had a part replaced (can't remember what it was, but close to the size of a packet of cigerettes and the seal was shot on it). Still got the same issue. Revs drop right down to aroun 200 then back up to idle. This leads to loss of power when you are lightly applying power to maintain speed.  Its OK when the engine is cold and when you put your foot down to accelerate. Thinking of getting rid if I can't fix it.
  • Volvo V70-06 - Dipped beam replacement 6 Sep 2011 (Forum)
What seemed like an inocuous dashboard message,"dipped beam bulb failure", turned out to be not only inaccurate but unreasonably costly. The fault is not the bulb, replaced but still no dipped beam; further investigation leading to a faulty electronic part, "ballast" ?, attached to the light unit and requiring a complete replacement at an estimated cost of £1150 +vat! Most likely cause is the ingress of water during recent downpour.
  • Vauxhall Corsa C - Stereo issues 29 May 2011 (Forum)
It will turn on manually but that means you must remember every time you leave the car to switch it off. From looking at the manual it appears that the red lead is one that controls this, so I tightened up the connection on it and wrapped it in insulation tape but it has made no difference. Does anyone have any suggestion of what might be the problem and how to resolve it?
  • Honda FR-V - Battery charging/losing charge 2 Mar 2011 (Forum)
If I park up and turn off the engine I cannot use radio/lights/fan or anything 'battery powered' as the battery seems to lose charge very quickly (I'm talking a matter of seconds) and the car won't start. If I use jump leads the engine fires up straight away. I have also noticed the headlights occasionally but regularly will dim slightly now and again.    Is this a battery issue? I have put a meter on the battery and it does appear to be charging ok.
  • Volkswagen Polo III - CEL light on - cylinder 2 misfire 1 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I got a check light a couple of weeks ago and it reported a cylinder 2 misfire. I changed the HT leads which solved the problem for about 10 miles.  I then replaced the coil pack which significantly improved the drive quality.  The light has since come back on.  The car drives better than it ever has, there is no loss of power and it idles comfortably.
  • Ford KA 2001 - Broken spark plug and defective easy-out 16 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Well I tried this and the easy-out broken off in the whole. Looking at it, it seams as though there was an imperfection which lead it to break off. So now I have both the spark plug and the easy-out stuck in the whole. Could anyone out there help? Thank you!

  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 98 1.8 Central locking 'bouncing'(locking then unl 4 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I shall check all the connections on the central locking control box at the weekend as I understand these can work loose and lead to poor connections, but if I just wanted to disable central locking could I just pull the appropriate fuse and resort to manually locking each door?

  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 99 2.0 JVC aftermarket cd player fitting 10 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I would rather it came on with the ignition, as it also doesn't switch itself off when exiting the car. It is wired straight to the existing iso lead, barring the steering wheel controls, so does anyone have any ideas?
  • Renault Clio II (2001 - 2007) - 2001 1.2 Engine occasionally cuts out 29 Nov 2009 (Forum)
It will start with a push. It was serviced recently with new plugs, air & oil filters and new oil. I notice that the plug leads seem to be the the carbon filled type which were never the best. Apart from that it must be a fuel problem. I think that the idle speed appears to be quite low. Any suggestions??
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 94 1.1 Major Battery malfunction 27 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I have never had this problem with any of my cars, so it has puzzled me I recently took the old battery out of my 205 as it was dead, and replaced it with a brand new one, the problem came when I connected the negative lead to the battery... as soon as I did, a crackling sound came from the front left of the engine bay, then smoke started coming out of the part that is on the right hand side that had a belt around it and what looks to be a fan inside the casing I have no idea what the part is called, but it is the only thing connected to the radiator with a belt on that side of the engine Bay
  • Mitigating circumstances for red light penalty... 8 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi, Have just received a notice of intent to prosecute for passing through a red light. As I have accumulated 9 points within 3 years, this will lead to a totting up ban. I went through the light in Bristol at 1.30am in the morning following a 5 hour drive from Manchester in my camper van on the way to Cornwall. I got lost on the roundabout, had to switch lanes and then got flashed.
  • East Riding of Yorks to get Speed Vigilantes. 26 Jul 2009 (Forum)
http://tinyurl.com/speed-patrols VILLAGERS are to be trained by the police to use speed guns, in a drive to put a brake on motorists. Pilot schemes are to go ahead in several villages, which could lead to the initiative being rolled out across the East Riding. Under the scheme, communities are expected to raise about £2,000 to buy a speed gun, which would become the property of Humberside Police.
  • Future cars, small engine with turbo 3 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Just checking the likes of autocar web site and found that the future of cars seems to be leading to small engines (1.0 Litres to 1.4 litres) with turbo's. This got me thinking that are we going to end up a nation of non paying road tax (sorry I mean Vehicle Exercise Duty) as all of these cars are 'green' ?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 2.0 ST170 hesitation at 2200rpm 21 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I noticed it in most gears, mostly if I cruised at 2200, and also if I accelerated through it in 2nd gear. It's had new spark plugs. I changed the HT leads this morning and it is better but not perfect. I don't notice it on cruising anymore, only when accelerating through the range in 2nd gear. Sometimes it feels like an automatic, when you put your foot down in, say, 3rd and it accelerates for a second then decides to change down and there's a surge of power when it locks up.
  • Toyota RAV-4 (1994 - 2000) - 94 2.0 Immobiliser removal and loss of ignition 9 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I have removed the 918T ECU unit from my Rav 4.First I could not run the starter motor until I was told to connect together the leads going to Pins 14 & 15 on the 15 pin socket. Others may be interested in this as it took me a while to find this out. I was highly chuffed to find the starter motor now functioned . That was the good news, the bad news was that the car still didn't start.

  • Traffic light duration. 13 Mar 2009 (Forum)
When going away from home the lights give plenty of time to clear traffic, including a right turn arrow. Coming back, the lights are on green for precisely 6 seconds, leading to tailbacks, especially at 'school chucking out' time If there is a mimser at the head of the queue who doesn't realise that being in gear would be a good idea then only2 or 3 cars get across.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 92 1.4 Strut removal problems 19 Jan 2009 (Forum)
it is rivetted to the lower arm; there is no room to put on a small seperator due to the drive shaft; I am nervous about driving in a wedge as there is a good chance of wrecking the rubber leading to new lower arm etc. any tips would be gratefully received. The track rod ends don't fit my seperator either. i am about to buy a small gear puller which would fit but again experience is great so a pointer to what works would be great.
