Paris introduces classic car ban 20 Jun 2016 (News)
The issue of high levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) being produced by modern diesels has been in the headlines ever since Volkswagen admitted fitting ‘cheat’ devices in emissions tests. Perhaps surprisingly, the Paris ban makes no distinction between petrol- and diesel-engined cars. Also banned from Paris under the same legislation are all motorcycles registered before 2000.
Skoda Octavia Estate vRS (2005-) 19 Jun 2016 (News)
The big news was the increase in power with the second generation Octavia getting the same 2.0-litre TSI engine (originally referred to as TFSI but changed for Skoda, SEAT and Volkswagen to make things simpler) as the Golf GTI and the same 200PS. The turbocharged engine is a wonderful unit to exploit and with a 0-62mph time of 7.3 seconds, this is one swift Octavia. The engine revs freely and is happy to be pushed up to the red line while the six-speed manual gearbox has a short and sporty shift.
Skoda Octavia vRS TDI (2006-) 19 Jun 2016 (News)
That changed in 2006 though when Skoda added a TDI option to the line up. The engine was the trusty 2.0 TDI Pumpe Duse (PD) which was used across the Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda ranges and even made its way into oddball stuff like the Dodge Caliber. The Octavia vRS got the 170PS version of the TDI engine (rather than the more commonly used 140PS) and although it has 30PS less than the petrol TSI version, it has 70Nm more torque.
Skoda Octavia vRS (2013-) 19 Jun 2016 (News)
However, the big difference is that the diesel is available with the option of 4x4, albeit it only with a DSG gearbox. But it's the petrol we're big fans of. The TSI is shared with the Volkswagen Golf GTI among others and it's a superb engine with a smooth revving nature and great response when you want it to perform. Acceleration from 0-62mph takes 6.8 seconds - a Golf GTI with the same engine is only 0.3 seconds quicker.
Skoda Octavia vRS 230 (2015-) 19 Jun 2016 (News)
What the vRS 230 does get is a new electromechanical front locking differential. It's the same system used on the Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance - a car which the vRS 230 basically mirrors. This diff can direct 100 per cent of the engine torque to either front wheel if needed. The idea being that it gives you more traction when exiting a slow corner.
Timewarp Austin Metro makes £7700 at CarFest South auction 1 Sep 2015 (News)
Donated into the auction by Hornby, the track was eventually sold for £11,220, with 100 per cent of the proceeds of the sale going to BBC Children in Need. Campervans always prove popular at CarFest, and a 1967 Volkswagen split screen campervan that was previously owned by legendary Blues musician and CarFest regular Seasick Steve eventually sold for £30,800. Another celebrity-owned car proved popular.
1000 lots set for Auburn Fall auction weekend 30 Jun 2015 (News)
The catalogue also includes a 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air 409 Bubbletop, which has benefited from a nut and bolt restoration. And the last car that caught our eye is a very original 1979 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible with just 177 miles on the clock. Steve said, ‘I’m never going to stop being a collector, I simply want to take it back to being a hobby.’ Another notable private entry is an immaculately restored 1929 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Convertible Coupe, engine no.
A Grand Monday: Citroen Visa Leader 14 Apr 2014 (News)
. The original Citroen Visa, launched in the UK in 1979, wasn't a huge commercial success, despite some glowing magazine reviews. It seemed to lack the flair and panache of rivals such as the Renault 5, Volkswagen Polo and Fiat 127, and it seemed a little too big to be city-friendly. But with five wide opening doors and a range of engines that included the flat-twin from the 2CV, there was no denying that it was a great back-to-basics choice.
