• Nissan X-Trail - Family SUV recommendations - £25k 22 Aug 2016 (Forum)
  Budget is £25k flexible and the prime contenders seem to be a nearly-new Nissan X-Trail or a 2013/2014 XC90. I am looking for opinions on these and any choices that I might not be seeing. I am spiritually opposed to MPVs and keen on boot space, quiet driving, and enough grunt in the low end to move.

  But I love the cabin size etc Need a 7 seater for family/shared school runs but also one that's presentable for taking clients/work colleagues in. 4x4 desirable as we tow a kayak trailer from time to time. I also like the 'height' of a 4x4 type car. Considering xc90 or x5. But also an s-max. Any thoughts or other suggestions? Thanks

  Call from insurers, inspector has found more damage to door frames etc. Given another courtesy car...brand new XC90. Value of my car about £7.5k ...V70 2008. Estimated cost so far. Repairs to mine...ongoing...£5k. Hire of S class for 2 months around £7k, now XC90 on hire for two days and no end in sight....madness!

  Just had my XC90 back from it's first 'proper' service at 12k. This is the first experience I've had of main dealer servicing for many, many years, as the previous family cars have all been old and serviced at dependable but relatively cheap independants.

    My monthly lease allowance is approximately £800, unfortuantely not enough for either Volvo XC90 & XC60 hybrids. My two primary requirements being CO2 emissions < 75 (thank-you spreadsheet Phil) and a SUV build (I'm 1.9M tall with a dodgy back so need to step into, not down into the vehicle).

  Does anyone know if extreme hot dry weather running has any detrimental effect(s) on an engine? I picked up a new XC90 on Thursday, and whilst out on a weekend drive the external temperature gauge showed 48 degrees C! (I'm in the Middle East). Yesterday after parking in the sun for a couple of hours the dash read-out was 54 degrees!

  Just been watching one of the numerous house programmes on TV(Channel 4's Selling Houses) and noticed the camera lingering for rather a long time on the Peugeot 607 driven by the presenter. If you watch Location, Location, Location you'll see them do the same with a Volvo XC90. Not really bothered about a debate about the pros and cons of soft marketing, but it got me thinking once again about the long, chequered relationship between cars and TV. Everybody has their favourite, but for my money you can't beat VHK 741S, a Granada which used to appear on The Sweeney back in the 1970s.

  Mostly 2WD cars with plenty of RWD and a few 4WD including some Subaru Outback and Forester taxis! Saw very few large SUVs - in fact I saw just two Merc MLs, two XC90s and I think that was it.

  Today, I paid a deposit of £500 for a Volvo XC90 T6. (Purchase price £11k) When I test drove the car, there was a strange noise when putting the car in reverse. The dealer said that he wiuld investigate and fix it. However, I have now looked on the internet and fond that the car is prone to gearbox failures which generally cost in the region of £5k to resolve.

  We've got a new Volvo XC90 arriving in November, about £17,000 saved in the kitty and a wheezing '93 Saab 9000CSE with 160k on the clock to chop in (I trust the salesman to keep a professional attitude when he makes his offer of not a lot).

  However, due to the bad Scottish winter last year I’m considering going for a 4x4 such as BMW X5 (3.0d SE), Volvo XC90 (2.4 D5), Honda CRV (2.2 i-DTDi ES) or Lexus RX400h.   I'm intrigued - not so much because I'd rather have this engine than a D5 in a V70, but that Volvo seems to think it's a viable combination. Is this merely Volvo's attempt to counterbalance the effect of all those XC90s on its average CO 2 value - i.e. all for show and not seriously expected to sell - or should those to whom the V70 represents family motoring nirvana be rushing to place their (all right, our) orders now?

  My 2003 XC90 T6 started behaving strangely about 6 months ago (shortly after converting it to use LPG), and I received a Transmission Service Urgent warning message a few times. The car drove perfectly well with no further errors until about 2 months ago - when I noticed the transmission felt like it was slipping (no increase in road speed when the engine speed was increasing, and then finally the transmission engaging and the car would shoot off).

  For some rather complicated reasons, I will be returning to the UK in a few weeks time to sell a 1 year old Volvo XC90 (2.4d SE right hand drive, exported on purchase and which I will first re-import - it has the full UK guarantees etc). I can only really spare about 4 or 5 working days in London, before needing to return overseas.
