  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0 tddi, high fuel consumption 2 Feb 2008 (Forum)
i have just purchased a 2001 Mondeo tddi 2.0l zetec(60,000miles) and am getting really bad fuel consumption, ie, 26 mpg around town, this has been consistent for 4 weeks and i have been driving like a Sunday driver (im not a boy racer) the garage have done a diagnostic test which did not show any engine faults, but the oil level was 1/2l above max, the mechanic said this could be the problem so he drained it out, also the air flow sensor was unplugged (i noticed this about three weeks ago) so i plugged it back in but there was no noticeable difference to the engine running when i did so, have i bought a pig in a sack??? has anyone got any ideas???, Edited in to current indexing system - what a difference three years makes !
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 1993 1.5d Bleeding Diesel fuel filter 27 Jan 2008 (Forum)
He tried this, even taking the screw right out instead of the 2 turns the manual recommends, and no fuel appears. The car struggled to run initially, but he bled air at the injector hoses, and this seems to have improved things. Just for argument sake, he looked at my Astra 1.7TD, which has an indentical filter arrangement, tried to bleed that (bearing in mind he hadn't changed the filter here, so assume it would flow with diesel as soon as bleed screw opened), and again no fuel appeared.
  • Flooded roads in the West Country ! 13 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Took me 75 mins to do 7 miles this PM! Floods everywhere, every little dip in the road filled by torrents of water running off the hills and fields, numerous roads closed, the deepest I went through was only about 8", apparently it had subsided, a broken-down SEAT was testement to its previous depth. Various other abandoned cars including a nice looking 56 plate E-Class just up the road from here.
  • Peugeot 406 (1996 - 1998) - 98 1.8 petrol help with cooling fans 9 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Everytime I turn the ignition off, whether I've done 2 miles or 100 miles, the cooling fans at the front of the car start to kick in. The temp gauge is reading between 70 - 80 so the engine is not running hot. The fans never actually kick in fully, they just turn over in a feeble attempt to start up, but keep doing this for about 20 mins after ignition is switched off. This is resulting in a flat battery more often than I'd like.
  • Rover 400 (1995 - 1999) - Starts without glow plugs? 20 Dec 2007 (Forum)
While he was buildning it back up after its HGF, he thought he would test the three glowplugs. He found that none worked at all. He showed me just now by running a current through a good plug and sure enough, the tip glowed red quite quickly. He did the same with the glow plugs on my Rover - no response at all. So how come, even on a frosty morning, is the car starting after just two seconds if the glow plugs arent working ( he tested all three, all the same )?
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - '97 1.7td Constantly flattening battery 18 Dec 2007 (Forum)
We just want to rule this out as a possible cause, and the alarm is the only thing other than the clock that is running when the car is not used. Its the standard factory fitted alarm which sets as soon as key is removed from the ignition. Any advice on this or any other possible causes please?
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 2002 1.9 Diesel - smoke and clatter 14 Dec 2007 (Forum)
It's calmed down slightly since I have had it, and I am getting the oil and filter changed tommorow. The car starts and runs fine (although the idle speed is a little high) It's only done 58000, but I lot of may have been with a faulty timing control solenoid. When I bought the car it sounded like it was about to blow up, but at high revs it quietend down, hence I guesses it was a timing issue.
  • Claim from other driver his fault, I'm TPFT 28 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Apart from telling my insurance co. that it's being written off, what else is there to do? I'd like to get the car scrapped before the tax runs out on 30 Nov. Can I scrap it before his insurers examine it, or can I just supply photos? As it happens I have off-road storage space, but SWMBO is unamused at rusting heaps littering the view.
  • Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - 1999 1.8 20v - air flow flap V71 motor fault 19 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Any advice would be appreciated, i'd find it hard to swallow a £700 garage bill for something that doesn't impact the running of a perfectly good car (just the annoying noise ! Many thanks in advance Kevin
  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - '97 1.2 86k Stuttering Engine 13 Nov 2007 (Forum)

  • Jeep - Fitted with LPG - good idea? 9 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Seems likely that it will be a 4-litre Cherokee with an LPG conversion. I wonder whether this is a good idea? My feeling is that it will be expensive to run, may have the transmission problems I have read about here, may be troublesome in the LPG department setting aside the availability of the stuff, and may not be CC exempt from next year. Quite apart from that I am worried about my daughter driving such a thing.
  • Least depreciating car - £8,500 8 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Hi all, With upto £8,500 to spend, what is the least depreciation car to run for 2-3 years? The criterias are 4 seats, not over 4-5 year-old (anything older and I would worry about electronics) & 50k to 100k on the clock, RWD or with RWD handling characteristics, good ride & handling and reasonably quiet on the motorway.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Surely this car can use any Diesel sold in UK ? 8 Nov 2007 (Forum)
    I have used all brands of fuel (from brand name stations and from supermarkets). Surely a 2006 car from a major manufacturer should be able to run on any diesel fuel sold in the UK? {tweak to Subject Line }
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2.2 TDCi-Smokes when accelerating/economy not good 31 Oct 2007 (Forum)
The car was ten months old and had covered just 17,500 miles. If I had to pay the bill, it would have been £7,800.00. This new engine runs much better than the last, however since I got it back it produces loads of exhaust smoke under hard acceleration and I struggle to get more than 35 mpg, even though most of my motoring is on an autoroute/motorway at sensible speeds.
  • Volkswagen Polo (1981 - 1991) - mk2 1.3 violent judder/mifire under load diagnosis 24 Oct 2007 (Forum)

  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Tyre shoulder wear problem 3 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Hi, hoping someone can help. I currently have a 55 plate mondeo estate tdci (running std Pirelli P6000 205/55/ R16 tyres). I bought the car with about 6k miles on and have put about another 10k on since then. I am guessing it has the original tyres. I noticed recently that the inside edges of the front tyres are worn far more than the rest of the tyre.
  • Skoda Fabia (2000 - 2007) - Good Cust service 1 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Henrys allowed me to collect the wheel, take it home and apply loads of Autoglyms finest to it to save me time in the long run with cleaning. Took it back and as well as changing the wheel over, they also valeted the car inc wet clean of the seats (for those of you that have seen vrS seats you will know how much of a bonus this was).
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 1.9 GTi overfuelling 10 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Could this be causing the problem? Is it true that the fuel pumps are either on or off on these? Should it be supplying a constant run of fuel across the rail? The only thing i can think of is maybe the coolant temp sensor but the worry i have is the amount of fuel it is pumping, it quarter fills a 5 litre jerry can in about 20 seconds of cranking!
  • Rover 200 and 400 (1989 - 1996) - - Battery drain problem? 30 Aug 2007 (Forum)
As I said, I have changed the alternator, and the battery.....both in the last 6 months. Shouldn't the nomal running voltage be at least 13 volts?
  • 1.4 VW Polo. Fuel consump w/ full tank? 18 Jul 2007 (Forum)
.********* However, last time, the efficiency seemed fine between 3/4 and 1/4 tank - is there any reason a car will run very inefficient with a full tank? Could it be the sensor in the tank reporting a false level? Would a leak behave this way? I'm wondering if there's a leak which only happens when the tank is full?
