Hi, hoping someone can help.
I currently have a 55 plate mondeo estate tdci (running std Pirelli P6000 205/55/ R16 tyres). I bought the car with about 6k miles on and have put about another 10k on since then. I am guessing it has the original tyres.
I noticed recently that the inside edges of the front tyres are worn far more than the rest of the tyre. The additional wear is quite localised on the edge and not spread across the width of the tyres that much. Both front tyres are about the same. Also there is evidence of slight "shredding" across the whole tyre (little knicks out of the tread).
I have also noticed that during driving (at around 30-40mph) there is a little wobble on the steering wheel. There are no issues (wobble etc) noticable at motorway speeds.
I had the tracking checked today (I was convinced that this was the problem) but was told there was no issue and in addition there was no looseness in the steering and no suspension issues.
Any suggestions anyone? Help?!?

I had a similar problem on my previous Mk3 V6 front tyres. Running on the correct manufacturers recommended pressures, it was wearing both shoulders more than the middle and an overall wear pattern of about 3mm more wear on the inside of the tyre. Tracking was within Ford tolerances. After a new pair of tyres lasted only 7k miles before reaching the minimum tread depth on th inside edge I fitted anothe pair and decided to up the pressures by 3psi above the recommended. This not only cured the shoulder wear problem, which I expected as the pattern was a classic sign of underinflation, but it also evened out the wear across the tyre, which I didn't expect and still don't understand to this day.

The tracking is out at the front wheels.
Currently they are adjusted toe-out.
Regardless of what the book says or what the acceptable tolerances are, the toe-in/out needs to be 0 plus/minus 0.

my mk2 wears both edges of both front tyres faster than the centres unless the tyres are run at 3psi over recommended pressures, although not in 7,000 miles. I got 18,000 out of the last set of fronts, which still had about 3mm in the middle, but were completely bald on the edges.
Tracking has been confirmed at 0° toe in/out by two individual garages, and it still does it. Current tyres seem to be wearing perfectly evenly since I upped the pressures.
A "feature" of the car, I think.
Cheers

My MK3 TDCI ate the inside edges of the front tyres pretty quickly. I don't remember the exact mileage or make of tyre. I do remember that the first replacements which were a different brand wore evenly across. I don't recall the tracking ever being adjusted but it is possible it was done when in for a service .. lease car so I just handed the keys over really. Maybe it was some bushes starting to bed in or something like that which improved the situation. I'm pretty thorough on tyre pressures so those were always kept standard.
I think the tyres were probably one set Michelin and the other Continental but I don't recall which were the originals.

Coincidentally, my V6 Had Continentals on initially and I replaced them with Bridgestones, my current TDCi has the original Michelins on which are wearing evenly across, with manufacturers recommended pressures.

My Saab tries to wear its front tyres out unevenly, they wear on the outer shoulders, even though the tracking has been checked, and I put a few extra psi pressure in them.
I have not cured it but seem to have improved it greatly by going to a higher load rating. Most manufacturers only make my size in 87 load rating, but I now have some that are 91 load rating (and XL rated). These have worn better and lasted longer than the 87's I had on originally.
This may or may not be an option for you?

Thanks to everyone for advice so far.
Just to confirm I have tried a little extra pressure, but would expect that if pressure was low both edges would wear faster than the middle?!?
I will also try different tyre make when I renew as many people have been critical of the Pirelli's. Maybe I will try michelin and see how I get on.
I think my wobble may be due to the car having sat for about 10 months without use before I bought it (possibly flat spotted tyre?!) as someone suggested to me today.
Hard to quickly tell, but as fuel economy and overall longevity of tyres are OK it cannot be too serious. Like someone said - a feature of the car?!?!

I don't think it is necessarily the Pirelli's that are the problem. I put a set of Falken FK452s on my 02 Mondeo. At the time the previous tyres had worn badly in the same place as yours. There was a tracking problem which was rectified by my local Ford dealer. The Falkens have done about 7500 miles and I noticed the week before last that they were wearing the same way- they are nearly bald on the inner edge. My initial thoughts were that the tracking/alignment problem had returned, but maybe not. I will be giving it a go with the slightly higher pressure.

I am going to try:
1. Changing the tyres, ideally to something with higher load rating
2. Upping the pressure by 3psi
3. Getting the tracking checked again and making sure it is exactly 0 +/- 0
I will let you know how I get on...
thanks all
