  • KIA Cee'd (2007 - 2010) - What oil ! 13 May 2009 (Forum)
As we will be covering a lot of miles I thought it would be a good idea to pick up a bottle of oil to top it up in case it needed it as it is obviously not fully "run" in. The handbook wasn't very helpful as to what grade/spec of oil to use, so i phoned the supplying dealer who told me it needed a 5W40 fully synthetic, however they did not exactly inspire confidence in the way they were speaking to me, so i rang another dealer who said it used 10W40 fully synthetic.
  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2008 -) - 08 2.0d erratic fuel consumption 28 Apr 2009 (Forum)
If I drop the engine into neutral the engine will tick over at approx 900-950 rpm. If I set the computer at present fuel consumption the car is shown as running at 27-30 mpg at 60 mph. This happens about twice a week. When I took the car back to Mazda the car was checked out and no faults were found .... because it behaved itself (typical). The car is driven fairly steadily in general.
  • Hyundai i10 (2008 - ) - Small new car with sunroof & fold flat boot? 26 Apr 2009 (Forum)
    - Older Honda Jazz - but rare, aging and expensive for age I'm after an economical car (low tax, insurance, running costs) with good reliability and I'm leaning towards the Hyundai i10 but before I commit, I wondered if anyone here knows of any other newish small car that I've missed that has the sunroof & fold flat boot?
  • Toyota Avensis (2009 - ) - Odometer / Speedo accuracy 16 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I took delivery of a 2009 Avensis 2.0 diesel recently, the speedo reads 65 mph when the Tomtom reads 60 mph and the regular run over the same route reads 110 miles on the odometer. I have the Avensis T2 with 16 inch wheels, higher specification Avensis models have 17 inch wheels. I've spoken to a main dealer who doesn't believe it's a speedo calibration issue (calibrated to the wrong wheel size) and has informed me that you are allowed 10% speedo error.
  • Car damaged by workshop - iffy repair. 23 Mar 2009 (Forum)
i took my car to have a new part on it. the car was involved in an accident whilst at the garage. this resulted in having doors, windows, front wing replaced plenty of filler in the car, mainly to the back of the car the piece that runs up past the boots window and rear door window towards the roof. All parts were second hand sanded down and resprayed, the gaps in the doors are all uneven, and when closing the bonnet only half the bonnet shuts tight, im unsure if the garage has insurance it wasnt used on my car. i was wondering if i could get a mechanic to do an independant inspection or is there a firm i should contact who does this. im unhappy because the car isnt in the same condition as when i left it at the garage. i had to have a breakdown company come and collect me, when i picked the car up, after a few hours of driving it broke down, they seem to think the chasis is twisted.
  • Toyota Corolla (1997 to 2002) - 1997 1332 Igniter problem 22 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Anyway, having conducted the flash code retrieval (bridging TE1 and E1 in diagnostic port) the code 14 came up. This is "ignition No IGF signal to ECU for 4 consecutive IGT signal during engine running Open/short in IGF/IGT signal from igniter to ECU Igniter malfunction ECU" according to one site, but my question is does anyone know the location of the igniter on the 1332cc Corolla (its the newer 'bug eye' shape).
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - which engine? 8 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I am considering replacing my current car ('99 Almera) with something newer. Really I'd like another MX-5 but as I need to be able to transport bikes and want sensible running costs, it looks like it will have to be another small family hatchback or estate. The obvious choice is the Focus but I've never driven one so would appreciate your views on the various engine options, i.e. how they are too drive and their relibility.
  • FIAT Punto II (1999 - 2006) - 01 1.2 Recurring Flat battery 4 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I took the battery back and had it replaced under warranty for another new one. Put it on last week. Car has run fine for a week, and tonight the battery is flat again.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8 speedo stops working & engine cuts out 29 Jan 2009 (Forum)
This has been happening intermittently for some time now & I have had new battery, alternator, plugs, etc & even Ford diagnostics run on the engine cannot find a fault anywhere! Obviously there IS something wrong here - does ANYONE PLEASE have any ideas???!!!
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - Vectra estate at £5995 - any good? 27 Jan 2009 (Forum)
However, are they any good? I am very keen on reliable cars, that are quiet to drive on motorway, cheap to run, and safe. Will the 1.8 engine do the job, ot will it be worked too hard? Will it fall apart - I've read enough Vx posts on here to frighten me - although they seem to be for the diesels. I wouldn't normally consider a Vectra, but at this price it seems rude not to.
  • Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 1994 1.8d Droning noise 18 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Hi, Feel cheeky as ive just registered and this is my second cry for help,Hope im not pushing my luck but i really dont know anything about cars or engines and being short of cash need to ask and hopefully learn a bit so i can save on garage costs. I have had the car 2 days and noticed today first time i took it for a run, that there is a droning noise that gets louder as i go faster, cant work out if its from front or rear. The best way i can describe it is it sounds like a noisy diff which i had happen yrs ago on an old mk2 escort i think it was which was cured by putting oil in.It seems to start at around 20mph and as i said gets louder with more speed at 70 i cant even hear the radio lol.
  • Happy New Year from New Zealand 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
None of the locals seem to complain though - it seems that half of the roads weren't even tar-sealed until about 25 years ago. Local past-time seems to be running over possums at night... Good news is... diesel at 45p/litre and petrol around 60p, and this in a country which has to import all its oil! And more amazingly, the pump prices have fallen by around 45% since the summer oil peak!
  • Problem with online Breakers 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I haven't - various phone calls sorry the computers gone wrong will sort it out etc still no refund Tried to phone in the week running up to christmas, nobody answers phone. I have emailed the 'umbrella company but got no reply.(2 Weeks) This experience has rather soured my opinion of what promised to be a useful service not a huge sum of money but it is the principle of the thing that bugs me.
  • My car dilema! Advice please.. 29 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Does anyone have any other suggestions of cars, strategies etc that will mean i can achieve most of the above and cheaply run a car for the next few years. Cheers!
  • BMW 3-Series E92 Coupe (2006 - ) - 320d or 325i 24 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I'll only do 10-12k mile per year and therefore given the higher cost of diesel the difference in running costs will be fairly small and will probably all balance out when taking into account the higher cost of servicing a diesel. 2. The credit crunch seems to have hit the price of larger petrol engine cars more than diesels and there are some 325's available at pretty keen prices at the moment.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2003, rusty doors...anyone else got them?? 17 Dec 2008 (Forum)
however, after a couple of days of ownership i decided to give it a more thourough clean, and, on my hands and knees poised with cloth in hand there it was RUST running along the (inside)bottom of every door, not just a bit but deep old flaky rust, hidden out of sight from a standing position. as you can imagine i was in total shock to find this amount of rust on a fairly new car and just wandered are there any more out there with this problem, if so, what have you done about it?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.8 - diesel smoke 29 Nov 2008 (Forum)
It is not difficult to start - it takes maybe another 2 or 3 turns of the starter on a frosty morning than it does when it is a hot day. It also runs smoothly more or less immediately after it has started. More noticeable is the dark greyish smoke that it emits under load e.g overtaking. This is constant, not just a single puff when you first press the accelerator.
  • Vauxhall Cavalier (1988 - 1995) - 1995 2.0 Knackered Alternator??? 23 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Having limited auto electrical knowledge, my first course of action was to change the battery. Put it on yesterday, put a multimeter across the terminals with the motor running. The voltage peaked at 18.8 volts!!!!!! Surely that's not right??? Also when I tried to take a reading with the heater, heated rear window, lights etc. Both headlight bulbs blew. So, if you haven't all knodded off by now!
  • Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 02 1.2 Problem with front wipers - intermittent mo 19 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Usually it's just towards the top of the motion and then they won't return so I have to either flick the arm or put them on full motion. I believe that the rear wiper uses the same relay as they do run in sync when working fine and this seems to be working OK. In fact if I put the front and rear wipers on intermittent then the rear works fine and the front seems to work on 1/2 mode, ie - when the rear makes a full sweep and return the front just go up and then when the rear goes again the front go back to the original position.
  • Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 96 1.6 - petrol judders 17 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hi my p reg 1.6e megane has done 62,000 miles and has run fine until I have recently started getting a jumping in the car when you take your foot off the power. I took it to a local garage who fixed a leaking head gasket ect this cost me £200 but did not cure my problem.
