Why don't I just do it? 17 Apr 2001 (Forum)
The saliva was running down my old jumper as I read all the threads under 'old cheap + fast'. I go back to the last one - the only time you lucky young lads on here will see a Wolseley 6/110 is on 1960s police black and white films. -
CO measurement on Gunsons tester 3 Feb 2001 (Forum)
Reading after stabilised was 0.1% CO On removing probe to air reading went back to 2% after 10 min for fumes to leave tester. I emailed gunson but they have not replied. The car would not run surely at 0.1% let alone at normal 750rpm idle which it did. Any suggestions gratefully received. -
diesel seat ibiza vs 206/306 12 Jan 2001 (Forum)
Ahh well, my H 205 turbodiesel although only 165k has reached the stage where ancilaries are starting to fail. No short runs & hants to cornwall weekly so it has to be on form. Scan of this site, HJ books & others boils my £5kmax + whatever 205 p/ex to seat ibiza turbo diesel, or 206/306 turbo job. 206/306 'coz interior of 206 & vehicle size seen remarkably close to its "bigger" bro. -
Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 01 1.6 headgasket changed, but still have problems 29 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I think I made a hasty purchase, but small, cheap automatics are like hens teeth, I'm self employed and my daughter is autistic and needs running around to a lot of appointments (plus I live in the sticks) so being without a car was a nightmare. Anyway, at the end of June, Piglet came to a dead stop wilst I was driving, no warning lights, no noise, nothing. -
Ford Fiesta 1.6 tdci - Garage diagnosis does not make sense to me 2 Apr 2016 (Forum)
I questioned the fault they had found and they said that the coil was open circuit at start up and then were ok once running. I said this seemed unlikely as a coil is good or bad and never in between. I said this and explained I was an electrician and understood how coils operate. I was told that it was possible due to the needle on the injector being part of the coil circuit and that the other garage had not diagnosed it as they dont have the test kit that we have. -
2003 Ford Mondeo 2.0 Tdci 130 - 2003 Mondeo 2.0 Tdci 130 Trusty Glow Plug Light! 13 Feb 2012 (Forum)
It belches out plenty of white smoke smelling of unburned diesel if you try and rev it. Eventually, the car starts on what feels like three cylinders, and when it is warm, it runs okay in limp mode (clearly no turbo etc), but it does go. It restarts from warm fine too. I can't help but think, if I can get the car to run right in limp mode, the problem will go away once the car is recoded. -
10k in an 'ugly duckling' ? 28 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Handling (I'm starting to smile) now the warmer weather is here has been absolutely fantastic, empty roundabouts are a particular joy when driven properly and you feel the rear squat down when the torque of the engine comes in when accelerating away. I mention the warmer weather because I was not sure about the run-flats during the colder months, but that may have also been because they were slightly under pressure and a few extra pounds seems to have made a big difference to both the grip and feel. These tyres run at much higher pressures than any of my previous cars . -
Mazda CX-5 SportNav (petrol) - 14 reg. Report 7 Feb 2025 (Forum)
As some may remember, I've had this car since 2016. I've put over 50,000 miles on it and it has been remarkably cheap to run. A couple of brake disks fitted on the rear a few years ago. New tyres. Apart from that, until recently no repairs needed. Last autumn, after a longish drive to the far north-east from Hertfordshire, I could hear a knocking noise from the suspension. -
Any - Car for the Mrs. 30 Dec 2024 (Forum)
So what you guys and gals reccomend for her. Budget £7k tops as it'll just be a run around for her, engine no bigger than 1.6, preferably smaller but not a deal breaker. Automatic obviously and reliable. Shes learnt to drive in a Hyundia I20 and thats a little to small. Any thoughts on the Honda Jazz, Nissan Note etc? -
Citroen C3 - Intermittently going into limp mode 14 Sep 2024 (Forum)
If we turn off the engine then restart it, the fault light disappears and it will drive fine for another while before it happens again. It was running fine before we left it in for a service, so we left it back with the local garage to investigate in case there was something they did during the service but after having it for nearly a week, they have said the fault is being caused by the one of the valves being faulty and that it needs a new cam cover at over £600 including labour. -
VW 2023 T-Roc Life TSI - Excessive tyre wear 31 Jul 2024 (Forum)
I immediately swapped over front and rear tyres but I will be very lucky if I can get 15,000 miles out of these tyres. They are Falken 310A Eco Run. I always drive as economically as is possible currently averaging 57.933mpg over 9,154 miles. I do not slew around corners or roundabouts, I do not accelerate quickly nor brake heavily and this mpg better than VW quote. -
Renault Clio - aircon intermittent 12 May 2024 (Forum)
Now we have this hot weather, The air con is luke warm/cold , But not ice cold , But then it will run cold for a matter of a minute and then back to luke warm. I am going to take advantage of a free air con check at Protyers next week and i have just spoke with the service manager who explained that my car should be OK or they would not have been able to Re gas in December, So i thought that i would ask your thoughts before i go and take it for a Air con Check . -
Ford Fusion - Engine overheating 21 Feb 2024 (Forum)
I tried a test this morning with a cold engine and coolant refilled to the maximum mark: 1) Started cold engine - still no leaks from anywhere after 15 minutes 2) Attached OBD reader to see temperature with engine running 3) Waited for temperature to rise and cooling fan to kick in 4) Thermostat appears to open okay as hose to radiator becomes hot 5) Temperature got to 101, still no fan, coolant starting to rise in the expansion tank 6) Decided to switch off engine - did so - fan suddenly kicked for just a few seconds 7) Restarted engine - temperature 99 - no response from fan 8) Coolant becomes increasingly agitated and then boils out of expansion tank making a big mess - but still no leaks from anywhere else I do not know what to suspect first - any ideas would be gratefully received Many thanks :-) -
Hyundai i30 - Hire car 20 Jan 2024 (Forum)
As a honest car for doing all the basic things right, I would consider it with perhaps the bigger 1.5 engine. However I can see the attraction of the 1.0 with running costs. It's currently averaging 50 mpg in quite mixed driving. -
VW T Cross - VW 1.0 (95) Tsi engine 'flutter' 12 Jan 2024 (Forum)
Recently, from dead cold for the first mile or two, the engine 'flutters' in the good old days, it's the sort of missing you'd get from pushing in the manual choke too early. Once the engine warms up, there is no problem, the engine runs quietly, smoothly and pulls well. As a simple old soul, I reason this fluttering/missing shouldn't be happening at all in todays engine and none of my previous small engine turbo cars have done this. -
EV discussions 8 Oct 2023 (Forum)
I will probably regret this as it's more work for moderators but if it works it might keep everyone happy. No harm in trying. Some current EV threads will get locked if they have run their course as it takes too long to move entire threads when they get to a certain size (more than about ten posts) -
Toyota MR2 - Vecta immobiliser 15 Jun 2023 (Forum)
As was common in those days, it is fitted with a Vecta immobiliser. The car was stored carefully for a number of years, as the children grew up, with the engine run to temperature at least monthly. We (my trusted local garage actually) have just completed a recommissioning, with all fluids changed, new plugs, HT leads, coil, distributor cap, etc. The fuel pump has also been replaced and tank flushed out. -
Hyundai i30 2018 1.4 Petrol Turbo - Engine Overheating - is garage correct ? 8 Feb 2023 (Forum)
After short while I carried on my way with no issue. I had been noting for a week or two previously that the engine cooling fan had been running more than normal when the engine was turned off. Happily (?) the car is still under warranty and a main dealer service was already booked before this incident. The dealer said the plastic reservoir had a split in the seam and there was evidence of leaking and the coolant level was low. -
Suggestions for a car 18 Oct 2022 (Forum)
I'd looked at a few 3 series bmw as well 318i and 320d but my dad says it costs a fortune to service and run a bmw, is this true? Any help and suggestions welcome. -
Premium Location Fee 29 Sep 2022 (Forum)
I recently got caught out by a nice little earner run by one of the leading car hire firms. I knew in advance that the standard limited mileage might not be quite enough to cover my three days' hire, but it was likely to be roughly the same as paying the extra for a flat rate.
