  • During and after the airbags go bang ? 26 Sep 2009 (Forum)
after having seen the video clip of the old lady giving the mercedes a clip on the nose with umbrella and setting off airbags, what happens to the car in a SLIGHT BUMP with all airbags used ? Having been a fan of bangernomics in the past ( last uk transport 1964 herald and 1980's 205 diesel together made excellent and fun transport) a slight bump and a weekends work good as new. Is the car interior now beyond economic repair with all those panels in pieces, how does it work?
  • Ford Galaxy (2006 - ) - £500 to fix door damaged by gust of wind :-( 3 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Needless to say I'm not too happy and have contacted Ford to get this fixed under warranty - don't think I'm wrong to expect not to have to pay £500 for each gust of wind - especially as I live in Edinburgh. Not sure if the S-Max has the same 'strapless' doors! Let's see what Ford have to say ...
  • Are you `overtooled` or still aspiring? 17 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Modern tools are so good and you can buy things that never seemed available on accessory shop shelves in the 60`s. Are you still adding or replacing tools, on a job by job basis like me? If so what are your latest acquisitions?
  • Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 99 1.4 noise under trailing throttle 17 Aug 2009 (Forum)
The noise is a fixed frequency, i.e. it doesn't vary with speed changes. There is very slight play in the inner n/s cv joint, and the boot has a pin prick leak of oil. Is this joint lubed from the box? Could the cv joint be the cause of the noise? Is the box running low on lube? If yes to either of these scenarios, why is the noise constant and not speed dependant?
  • Renault Laguna III (2007 - ) - Considering new Laguna Tourer - Am I mad? 6 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Called in to the local Renault dealer today at lunch time (in my work car) and was astounded to be a offered a brand new Laguna Tourer estate 1.9 DCi Dynamic S (17" alloys part leather and reverse sensors) in a lovely metallic blue for £12995!. Its a lovely car and the saleman will consider the Mazda 'at a fair price'. Given past posts about the last Laguna I am anxious about spending my hard earned on a car that is unreliable.
  • 'invited' to a second speed awareness course 8 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I got 3 points back in 2000, that's it for me. nothing until this year did a speed awareness course for being flashed 4 months ago, I am having a bad year as within 24 hours recently I got two letters for being flashed (honestly not a fast driver) from different authorities. One was for driving through s london too fast at 7:00 AM sunday morning anyway, this London one are now offering me a course. I have already done one. It says on the form that you cant do more than one in 3 years So, what are my chances of getting away with it?
  • Toyota Yaris (1999 - 2005) - 04 1.0 PAS- very light and won't self-centre 27 May 2009 (Forum)
I am not sure if it?s a characteristic of the power steering on this car but the steering wheel doesn?t ?self-correct? all the way back to the straight ahead position when you turn a corner. At low speeds if I turn the wheel a little left or right and let go ?
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 05 1.6 DPF failure 24 Apr 2009 (Forum)
When the car went in for the new injector there was nothing discernibly wrong with the DPF. Ford won?t touch it because it?s out of warranty. I?m suggesting that the catastrophic failure is as a result of the faulty injectors that were fitted. Roll on the legal arguments. In the meantime I?m assuming that the DPF is located as part of the exhaust system.
  • Renault poised to scrap Laguna model 13 Feb 2009 (Forum)
If Renault does drop the Laguna next year then won't it mean a disastrous drop in residual values for the existing model(s) ?
  • Good old foaming at the mouth Derv 8 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I last saw this years ago using supermarket Derv and perhaps have been spoilt by exclusively using Shell none foaming fuel which gives a clear fuel `surface` in the filler neck. So what`s the score on foaming - for those who fill up with differing brands - perhaps this was a one off?
  • Small(-ish), Jap(ish), used chain-cam diesel auto? 24 Jan 2009 (Forum)
It has to have been made for quite some time so is available in sufficient quantities for its price secondhand not to be unreasonable. (I am, of course, aware that prices for good s/hand cars are artificially high now because people are scared to commit to purchasing new ones.) If it's not going to be Japanese, what would Back Roomers recommend? Thank you. AF.
  • MINI Cooper R50 (2001 - 2007) - 03 Coolant looks like chocolate 14 Jan 2009 (Forum)
It runs fine, doesn't overheat and performance is ok - initial thoughts were head gasket, but never heard of it being a problem on this engine before.. Car had done 56,000 and got full MINI service history. Any ideas what might be the cause? s
  • Finding a `dream bike` for the new year.... 1 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Its there though gleaming and smelling of oil, petrol and rubber on certain nights as owls fly silently over the house under a full moon. Amazing how that persists and yet the Yamaha SR500 single never appears. That`s dreams for you I guess... So what should I go and sit on in a showroom to try to generate something new? I have a 34" inside leg and long arms and feel scrunched up on some modern bikes that don`t have a flat seat to allow you to sit further back.

  • looking after subframes & sumps - pictures 25 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The van`s 3 years old now, never been polished, but this is what I do underneath. The grease on the subframes (as pictured today) has been on two years - Castrol CL waterproof grease. I touched up the brake pipes - not really needed - last August.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 99 1.9td Air con and rev counter 22 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hiya i have a 306 1.9td S reg, for a while now my rev counter decides to drop anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes into a journey, the air con seems to cut out about the same time, the light on the dash stays on though, just isn't cold anymore you press it off then on, no click or cold air.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 2.0 Sludge in inlet manifold - diesel? 29 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Whilst driving at the weekend a slight wooshing noise whilst under boost indicated an air leak upstream of the turbo, I found a slight split in the "S" shaped rubber hose that leads from the intercooler to the EGR outlet tube that itself leads up to the inlet manifold. I fitted a new hose today, quite straightforward, and at the same time replaced the water/PAS pump aux belt while in that area of the engine.
  • Advice - Insurance Write-off of old, but good car 29 Sep 2008 (Forum)
A friend has just had her car damaged in a minor accident, where another driver ran into the back of her car, and pushed it into one in front, The other driver has admitted liability and a hire car has been provided whilst the situation is dealt with. The problem is that her car is an S reg Rover 25, it had low mileage, full service history, was reliable and been owned by her from new, but even on a good day can't be worth much more than a few hundred pounds. The repairs have been costed at £ 1600 I fear that the insurance company will make a derisory offer of £ 100 - 200 for the car and she will be left without any transport or the means to buy a suitable replacement, ie not a complete heap.

Thankyou for any replies
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 2001 1.4 Automatic gearbox - engine cuts out 19 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Had a problem with my car for a while now, basically on my display i have a sport (an S in a circle) and ice (a snowflake in a circle) indicators, they flash on when i'm driving and instantly slow down the car so that it feels very heavy. I have to pull over and restart the car, if i don't do this the car cuts out and turns itself of.
