  Hidden Heroes: Vauxhall Meriva VXR 16 Aug 2019 (News)
  The Vauxhall Meriva isn’t the obvious basis for a performance car, but that didn’t stop Vauxhall, or more specifically its sister company Opel’s OPC division, from turning it into one.  Launched in 2006, the Meriva VXR was the fourth model to appear in the brand’s new performance line-up, following the Astra, Vectra and equally unlikely Zafira.  It was powered by a 1.6-litre, 178bhp turbocharged engine and got a body kit, 17-inch alloys and a choice of four colour schemes - red, blue, silver or black - while inside the Meriva’s flexible interior layout was clad in a leather and alcantara mix.  It was a ridiculous concept - a tall, high-riding mini-MPV with rather insipid monobox styling, with a tyre-shredding power output that gave it a top speed of 137mph and the ability to sprint to 0-60mph in juts 7.8 seconds.

  The Beaver Bullet, which was built to combat the negative press reaction to an oil-burning Rangey, was the first diesel-powered car to maintain an average speed of 100mph for 24 hours. It broke all diesel speed records for a 4x4, and over three days in August in 1986 at the MIRA test track, two diesel Range Rovers took a total of 27 sprint and endurance records.

  The move - also happening with it's sister brand, Opel, across Europe - is part of PSA's plan to boost sales and cut costs.  S ales of Vauxhall cars have been falling for some time but the decline accelerated last year, dropping 22 per cent. In 2017, Vauxhall sold 195,000 cars in the UK. The Managing Director of Vauxhall Motors, Stephen Norman, explained that he didn't expect any redundancies among the dealership workforce of 12,000 as the showrooms affected would take on the PSA brand.

  The oldest Ford Escort XR3 in the UK is going under the hammer. The car, which was one of three used on the original model’s press launch, was restored in 2016. It will be offered for sale at Barons’ auction on 27 February and could fetch up to £15,000.

  Learners to get motorway lessons from 2018 14 Aug 2017 (News)
  The Government ruling lifts the ban that prevents provisional licence holders from driving on motorways, provided that they're accompanied by a qualified instructor and using a car with dual-controls. According to the Department for Transport (DfT), young drivers are up to seven times more likely to be killed or seriously injured on the road, compared to those aged 25 or over, with the majority of accidents taking place in rural areas.

  What's more, around half of doctors questions said they felt pressured to diagnose whiplash, despite there being little sign of injury. LV says the UK sees more claims for whiplash per car accident than any other Western European country, despite legislation being introduced to curb the number of false claims. Eight in every ten accidents where one driver admits liability will lead on to a whiplash claim (78 per cent), versus 35 per cent in the Netherlands and 30 per cent in France.
