  • Noisy Tappets 10 Sep 2001 (Forum)
I'm not sure if this is 'one of those things' with the engine but the tappets are fairly noisy. Once driving the tappet noise is non-existant as I think the oil pressure is up and OK. At idle, it's audible as a ticking noise. The car has been fully serviced and 4 years old with 60K on the clock. I'm wondering if the oil is not the right grade but other than that I'm foxed.
  • technical one... 30 Aug 2001 (Forum)
my car pulls slightly to right under acceleration, and to left under braking. there's nothing wrong with the brakes (the balance has been checked), and i was wondering what would be the first thing one of the mechanics out there would look for. the car is a '97 fiesta with 40k on the clock, hence front wheel drive and i'm suspecting play in the front bushes, which are then affecting the geometry of the car depending on the load being placed on the components.
  • bans by post 20 Aug 2001 (Forum)
according to the telegraph, the government is considering driving bans by post (automated) where the drivers dont even have to go to court... get flashed a few times in one day, and hey ho guess you'll get a ban in the post... makes those gatso's on straight clear stretches of the M1 easy mechnisms to cut right down on the number of licenced drivers...
  • petrol consumption Picasso 29 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Do you have any idea what petrol consumption I am likely to achieve in general mixed driving (rural town and country) from the Picasso with either 1.6 or 1.8 engines and a relatively light load (two people + boot full of luggage)? No-one seems to have any idea and I can't find any useful data because presumably the marque is too new.
  • Volvo V70 full size spare 25 Jun 2001 (Forum)
The brochure stated that a 16" wheel would fit but not a 17", but I can't seem to get it to fit - the battery seems to get in the way....I don't want to be driving around with only the skinny space-saver as a spare. Please help! -Martin
  • Citroen ZX tyres 11 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I drive a Citroen ZX 1.9D Temptation which needs new front tyres very soon. Citroen recommend only 175/65 R14 MXT tyres. Michelin say that I can also use Energy MXT or Energy XT1 tyres. Can I use either of the Energy tyres with confidence and has anyone had experience of these, particularly on the front wheels of the ZX diesel?
  • Speeding Fine 10 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I've been 'caught' by either Gatso or Laser trap doing 58 in a 40 zone. I have to question this as I know the location of the speed traps and drive accordingly. I've been offered the chance of accepting a fixed fine and three ponts as an alternative to appearing in court. Does anyone have any experiences of defending themselves against such an accusation......or will I be any better off just accepting the fixed punishment?
  • economical used cars 4 Mar 2001 (Forum)
I wish to buy a used car, but only have a limited budget. Iam used to driving a 11992 cavalier 1600 which has given sterling service and which my husband will still continue to drive.I am looking at similar Cavaliers but wonder about alternatives. My maximum budget is £2,ooo.
  • A bland farewell 24 Oct 2018 (Forum)
They either hadn’t done as instructed and checked the thing initially finding no fault after me giving it to them the night before to drive from cold, then they decided that it was just a “characteristic of the model sir.” This although a known fault is not a characteristic, had this been so it would’ve done it from new! The final straw came when the very young lassie behind the service desk stated that it was “down to my driving style.”
  • new driving article? 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
My friends ask me in this order: How are you? How's your car? Until recently it's just as likely for me to be driving a loaner as it was for me to be driving the car I actually purchased -- I will probably replace my X with a newer model once the warranty runs out in 2006, since I don't want to get stuck with the fix-it bill, and hopefully by then the issues will be taken care of.
  • N/A - Luton Van Road Rage 8 Feb 2022 (Forum)
Im blowing my horn thinking he has not seen me, I have a car close behind me so I cannot brake. The Luton Van effectively overtakes the HGV by driving down the centre line between myself and the HGV. I’m not sure if the HGV had to go onto the Hard shoulder to avoid a collision. After we overtake the HGV he returns to the left hand lane and then swerves in front of the car behind me flashing his lights and the swerves to left back and forth, we now overtake another HGV with another van in front, all the while he is driving up to me pretending to ram me from behind, then undertakes by breaking the speed limit again, recording me on his phone not looking at where he is going and almost rear ends another Van had I not pointed to it.
  • Chevrolet Aveo - When to call it quits? 18 Dec 2019 (Forum)
The car managed 12 months of event free driving, but a monster MOT (over £700) in September this year, alongside a recent misfiring issue (likely coil pack problem, possible bigger engine problem) have meant that I have spent close to 2.5k on a car that is unlikely to resell at more than £700 (We Buy Any Car estimate).
  • VW Polo 2004 1.4L - 54 Plate VW Polo randomly cutting out 26 Oct 2019 (Forum)
It's been absolutely fine until now so I thought maybe I had just stalled it. I did also just have the exhaust manifold replaced (no idea if that helps). Today driving to work it happened again, I slowed to go over a roundabout and it just cut out so I manged to limp it over and turn hazards on, again after 2 attempts including revving the engine it started - I got 200 yards down the road, it happened again - this time I was just driving at about 30mph, it was when I pressed the brake to slow in traffic that it cut out.
  • Chrysler PT Cruiser 2004 - key will not turn all way in ignition to start eng 18 Jun 2018 (Forum)
(very annoying). lights on dash work, electric windows open, sunroof opens etc, but no engine start, chiming noise and flashing security light. On way to the shops and whilst driving did note that there was an unfamiliar clicking noise to the left hand side backseating area of the car very similiar to the car doors locking themselves, which in fact did happen.  i just rectified this when i stopped driving by pressing the open button on the key fob and got out of the car (didnt think anything of it - it never happening before).
  • A quandary, third car or not? 25 May 2018 (Forum)
Help me with a quandary, oh knowledgeable BRers. SWMBO drives a 3 year old Sorento diesel Auto. We own it outright, it's now done 45 k miles. Bought at <2k miles and 6 months old. Her mileage has increased from 15k/yr to now nearer 20k and whilst considering its size and weight the Sorento will do 35-37 mpg on a run, day to day its  nearer 30-32.
  • Audi A3 - Second hand car troubles - rights? 1 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Sunday July 22nd I bought an Audi A3 (2006) for my pregnant wife to use as her family car when the baby comes later this year. 63,000 miles (petrol) and we paid £4,100 cash. Car drove fine in test drive, no problems mentioned by the dealer. During the drive home the ESP light came on fleetingly and my wife said she felt like she lost power; I spoke to the dealer and they said it was likely as the car had not been driven for a while and it was blowing the 'cobwebs out' (I realise how ridiculous this may sound to people who know about cars; I am unfortunately not one of these people). 2 days later the car has lost power again when my wife is parking, she has pressed the accelerator and it has lurched toward (it's an auto) causing the door to be scratched/dented slightly.
  • Hyundai i30 - £500 deposit returns policy and rights 11 Jul 2016 (Forum)
I said I had not even test driven one of these cars and that if I paid a deposit this would not mean I was obliged to buy it. He said no it would be subject to test drive and that they were not that bad. I asked if I should test drive one they had here and he said no we can get this one in. I then said I would want finance and so he did all the credit chequers to see if I was eligible and I was.
  • MINI Cooper - Motability insurance - I was denied 18 May 2016 (Forum)
I hadn't spoken to them but my mother said they claimed I need to wait 5 years AFTER my points expire (total 8 years for one offence). So not only will I not be able to drive this vehicle but I won't be able to drive the next car in 3 years.   This spanner in the works has thrown the whole thing into a mess. The purpose of this scheme is to help my mother who is immobile and my sister by her own admission is incapable of matching the needs of my mother (her confidence is shot).
  • Ford S-MAX - Starting problem, temperature fault in CAT 19 Jan 2015 (Forum)
They cleared the alarm and advised us to see how we got on. If the fault came back soon then they said they would suspect the CAT itself. The car has been driving fine since then though now 2 months later the engine warning light re-appeared.   This time I took it to a completely different garage and they confirmed the warning again came from the temperature sensor in the CAT.
