  Does anyone know what the recommended oil change mileage is for an automatic gearbox in a B Class? I plan to call the manufacturer some time soon but wondered if anyone knew it off hand or had access to the correct information. I am thinking about keeping the car beyond it's 4th year and I'd like to know if there will be any costs associated with a higher than planned mileage.

  Have things really improved that much, to the extent that you can still get 200,000 miles out of an engine and it still be clean inside, on 20,000 oil change intervals? Its really evidence (IMHO) thats needed and time some consumer research was done. It would be easy for a selection of cars to have their cam covers taken off, cam lobe wear and sludging contrasted with conventional service interval cars and the results published.

  I will check cable adjustments and check transmission oil. It should be 10/40 grade. With engine idling the gears can be selected ok. Might it help to change the transmission oil? The manual does stipulate periodic changes. A lot of mechanics say this is unnecessary.

  Just about to set to changing the oil and filter on my wifes car after getting the engine nice and hot when I notice that the filter I have just bought is some 35mm longer than other filters I have used including the makers. Question: Although the thread and oil seal look the same as the others should I risk fitting it or wait until I have checked it out, I will not be until next weekend when I will again be able to do the oil chang.

  This estate has the diesel TDCi engine. It has been owned from new, done 26,000 miles and has the engine oil changed every six months. Regretably it does a large number of short journeys. The car runs brilliantly. The oil was last changed at the end of June. The oil is dipped weekly and until a fortnight ago was at the corrrect level every time.

  Why do some manufacturers specify manual gearbox oil changes, while other manufacturers say theirs are 'filled for life'? They all contain similar oils (such as GL5), is it to do with the actual gear materials, or some manufacturers simply see it as preventative maintenance?

  Medium hatch in for service yesterday. Oil capacity with filter change 3 litres. It is a habit of mine to check the level before draining, none on the dipstick of this one! Measured the drained oil inc that from the filter and there was 1.2 litres!!!!
