Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - 2000 TDI PD (115) Power Loss 29 Sep 2011 (Forum)
The turbo variable geometry linkage is working okay as the control rod moves a considerable distance if the vacuum pipe is disconnected with the engine running. I belive the "N75" or "N18" solenoid valves can fail? Do these symptoms suggest this? What I'm really asking, is does the symptom of the loss of power ONLY above 2,800 to 3,000 revs (when pulling high gears) give rise to the problem being definitly one (or more) particular component failures? -
Ford Fiesta MKIV 1.25 Zetec S - Master cylinder replaced now erratic idling!! 14 Aug 2011 (Forum)
one thing i forgot to mention was, when putting on new master cylinder i had the battery out completely overnight. i have noticed that there is a gentle hissing sound around the servo when the engine is running but i cannot feel/see any leaks of air. Thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated as i am in a state of imminent hair loss blimmer -
Seat Leon - Used purchase with intermittent issues! Pls help! 13 Apr 2011 (Forum)
I'm stationary when testing, would that make a difference? Other than that I have no idea what could be triggering the light. The engine runs ok and there's no loss in performance? 2nd issue. Sometimes the central locking fails to open the drivers' door and only the drivers door. Would it just need a bit of oil? 3rd issue. -
Honda Civic vtec e 1996 - Heater fan kaput! PLEASE HELP 5 Dec 2010 (Forum)
A mate of mine who used to drive HGVs said there's a heating device that lorry drivers use that has long heating strips that attaches to the top and bottom of the windscreen, and runs off thru the cigarette lighter but he couldn't remember what it was called, or know where I could get one. As you can gather I pretty desperate here so any helpful suggestions re: car repair solutions or feasible in-car heating alternatives greatly received. -
Volkswagen Lupo - loud screech noise from rad fan 2 May 2010 (Forum)
460441600&1&696dabb3cd71f92a47404c584970c5fd35f64422&TMPS That error code hasn't poped up yet. (only run the engine for 5 mins) I ran the car at 2k revs until the rad fan kicked in to get any air locks out of the system. Now when the rad fan comes on at 90 degrees, there is a really loud screeching sound. -
Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 1995 1.9 TD Smoky start 5 Feb 2010 (Forum)
After standing overnight I glow the plugs twice before attempting to start (though glowing once doesn't seem to make much difference). The car will always catch immediately but then runs rough for 15-20 seconds. Pumping the accelerator doesn't have an immediate effect and the engine struggles to rev. After 20 seconds (without revving) the engine settles down and is fine. Starting after that point is also fine. -
Dodgy garage, what to do next .... ? 1 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Not the normal engine 'off' sound from a 02 TDCi 1.8 Focus - it now sounds like something hasn't been bolted back properly! Should I continue to run the engine - is it safe (runs OK ...) So question - what should I do next?! I am clearly NOT going to be using the garage again. What I think I will do is (advise please): 1. Take the Focus to my local Ford dealer, to diagnose the air-con and more importantly the rumbling noise on switch-off ASAP. -
A Lovely "Day" Trip to Scarborough 11 Oct 2009 (Forum)
A couple of days ago my neighbour asked if I could run him down to Scarborough from Sunderland to look at a car, on private sale, for his son. "OK", I said, but it turned out that we had to set out at 6am this morning (Sunday). Something to do with the vendor of the car needing to get to play football. -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 96 1.8 (petrol/carb) erratic idle & cutting out 3 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Tonight, driving home it cut out on me about 12 times in a 8km drive ? When it cuts out , the revs just drop to zero? no stutter ?. no shaking like is running out of petrol ? the rev and petrol needles ?jump? once and the car just dies ?run start while the car is freewheeling does not get it back to life ? also while freewheeling after ?The Cut? the indicator don? -
Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 97 1.9TD unpredictable Blower 28 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Symptoms: After on the ignition, and on the air condition the blower didn?t turned on, but after few minutes, two blower starts to run. Off the car and redo again the same, blower didn?t start instantly. After some time both fan turns on. Run for a while and driver side fan only working other side not working. So the radiator specialist suggests its blower fan problem. -
Cars for tall families 24 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I like the idea of a 4x4 in terms of the height (not having to stoop/bend) to lift the little'un or shopping/baby gear etc into the car, but I'm not sure about running costs, and MPV's are just cars with more headroom surely? (which I don't need). Go on, tell me what I'm overlooking. -
Bank Holiday travel - the train vs the motor car 20 Apr 2009 (Forum)
However, having spec'd up the journey on t'interweb, it will involve 2 changes (not good with luggage and small children), including a final leg on a rail replacement bus (the ultimate horror), unless I go for the only available direct train which runs far too early in the morning for my likings. And the return journey is much the same, unless we get the only direct service of the day, which runs far too late in the evening for our needs. Not only that, the shortest journey times are around 3 hrs 45 mins, the longest well over 4hrs. -
Manchester congestion charge - Why I am voting yes 8 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I had a bit argument with a friend last week on the matter, he was saying it would take him too long to get to the city centre by public transport, which I then pointed out but they will be a tram stop at your door which will take less than ten minutes to go get into town. Compare that to driving into town spending £3 a day parking 1 mile from your office etc. I run my own business, own and run my own car, yet I am voting for the charge :). I am not bad, I just have common sense. Edit lets please keep this friendly, I think there might have been discusions on here before I can't remember. -
Renault Megane (1999 - 2002) - 99 1.6 16v. Misfire / vibration after wet coils 24 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Unburnt fuel in the exhaust. I have dried out the coils and cleaned the plugs and the engine starts fine and runs fairly smoothly when cold. When it's up to temperature, it bobbles a bit and sound like theres a slight blow from the right hand cylinder plug chamber (but this could be from anywhere and misleading). -
Peugeot 806 MPV (1995 - 2003) - 01 2.0 Expert HDi 110 black smoke and poor economy 2 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I have disconnected the exhaust where the cat connects to the centre silencer and the cat seems to be clear. The engine runs a little better and the turbo seems to come in a bit quicker, but it's not a massive difference and I am still getting plenty of black smoke coming out the cat. Even with the exhaust silencers disconnected the intercooler pipes don't bulge when the turbo's spinning. -
FIAT Punto (1994 - 1999) - 95 1.2 non-starter. 14 Aug 2008 (Forum)
-Then, and slightly more serious, at completely random times the ignition warning light would come on which was followed half an hour or so later by the car ceasing to run. It was later decided that this was because this warning light meant that the alternator was no longer charging the battery and that the engine was running solely off the battery- hence the inevitable break down shortly after the light came on because the battery was completely flat. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - How long do I have to reject a car 10 Jul 2008 (Forum)
THis car has had about 6 attempted repairs. Its my own private car. It has only done 13k and has been serviced only be Ford and run only on Shell diesel (I used to use V-power diesel by now use the standard stuff since the prices went mad!). -
FIAT Punto II (1999 - 2006) - 1.9D, the old smoker, quits in time for MOT.. 4 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Every year, pre MOT, I have to thrash it up and down the local motorway sliproads in third to the limiter. It more or less blacks out the motorway on the first run, you can do this 8 times before it diminishes but its still there. Last, night I anticipated the same in preparation for todays MOT, but not so. To my amazement, there was a greyish black HAZE on the first full throttle third gear, to the limiter run, but after that almost nothing to be seen. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1995 turbo diesel rough start 8 Jan 2008 (Forum)
hi, wonder if any of you guys can help me with this, i know these cars pretty well but seem to have ran to a dead end. basically from fully cold ie. left overnight then the car is a pig to start and when it does it smokes heavily with grey fumes for 5 minutes or so. the glow plugs have been replaced yesterday and i can confirm they definately work by putting them across a battery and they glow brightly at the tip, one was dead so it now catches first turn of the key but you need to keep the accelerater pressed down then rev the car to get it to fire properly and settle to idle, it's like a massive flat spot when you first start it which makes me suspect it's suffer from fuel drain back overnight, priming the bulb doesn't make much difference and ive replaced the leak of pipes and fuel filter seal as they are the most common points of air ingress. ive measured the glow plug feed whilst running and it stays more or less at 13.4 volts for circa 3 minutes then the relay switch's off so im ruling that out. having read the xantia thread that's running at the minute it could be exhaust valve clearences but id have thought this would affect more than just the very 1st start of the day, you can start the car leave it to idle for 5 minutes (thermostat still closed so don't really suspect you could say it's warmed up) stop it and it restarts fine with no smoke, the cold start waxstat is taught when cold and goes slack as it warms so suspect it works, ive also tried removing the waxstat wire and fully adjusting the arm on the bosch pump by levering with a screwdriver so it is definately in the cold start position and again it has no effect, so now im at a loss to explain what's happening, so all help would be gratefully received. -
2001 Ford Fiesta Ghia overheating 27 May 2007 (Forum)
I recently purchased a 2001 fiesta ghia (with the 1.6 zetec se engine). The problem is it keeps running really hot. The only real pattern to it is that it will stay cool as long as its working.. if for example I'm on the motorway it will be fine, however, when i come off the motorway and get stuck in traffic thats when it can really shoot up..
