1.3 Fiesta. 10 Oct 2002 (Forum)
A friend has had constant problem in the past with her Fiesta 'kangarooing' and failing to run properly or tick over when cold. This was diagnosed by a garage as a vacuum pipe that had become disconected. There seems some truth in this 'cos the problem stopped the day they claim to have reconected it. -
Just how is insurance calculated? 3 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Just been running some figures through as I'm planning to get an old banger for use as a second car, and need insurance to be as cheap as possible. Now I always thought the primary consideration was insurance group. -
Omega rust and final drive whine 16 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I have been looking for an Omega to replace my 14 year old Carlton and have found a large proportion of those inspected to have rust under the paint beneth the winding window seals on one or more doors. This can be detected as bumps by running a finger along the rubber, even if the paint has not begun to blister wher it can be seen. This looks like a serious and expensive problem to rectify, and very disappointing to find on 3 to 4 year old cars. -
Clio Auto Warning Light 9 Sep 2002 (Forum)
The coolant and gearbox oil have been changed and there is nothing wrong with the gearbox (in that it seems to be changing up and down as expected and the position of the comfort/sports setting swich still retains an impact). The car has been run with the light on with no apparant adverse effect. Has anyone had a similar experience which would help me to pinpoint the problem? Thanks, John -
Suzuki Swift - any good? 23 Aug 2002 (Forum)
The car would be used for a 30 mile round trip to work each day, mainly on country roads, and local running around during the weekend. Does anyone have any opinions on this car, preferably from ownership/ friends' experience etc. All info gratefully received. Regards Pat -
Honda Civic R 1 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Anyone out there with experience of both? How is the Honda to live with? The golf was mega dear to run, is the Honda the same? 2. My old man has an Impreza turbo and is always bragging. How does the Honda stand up to the scooby? (I would love an impreza but they are just to expensive.) 3. Any horror stories? -
Vauxhall - 97 1.6 16v Ecotec. When to replace H T Leads? 4 May 2002 (Forum)
Have 1.6 16v Ecotec that is 5 years old and done 105,000 miles with no problems. Starts and runs fine but I'm wondering if I should replace the H T leads. How long do they last? I can remember the subject coming up here many moons ago and advice being given on measuring the resistance of each lead. -
5th Gear. 1 May 2002 (Forum)
Ok, I'll start the inevitable thread! Cracking show! A twin Kawasaki engined 'Tiger' being thrashed generally and being given on 0-60 run with Tif. Excellent fun and lot's irresponsible airfield shinnanigans from Mr. Needel. Cracking. The tiger has one 1200 enging powering the rear wheels and another powering the front. IIRC nearly 500 BHP in a Lotus 7 based chasis/body. -
Pug206 problem 26 Apr 2002 (Forum)
A colleague had, maybe still has a problem with her (still under guarantee) Pug206 not starting. Since it had been started but only run for a minute or two, I suggested it was protection for the cat preventing a re-start. However, it was lifted away to the dealer who diagnosed: 1. Fouled spark plugs due to unburnt petrol(!) - replaced 2. -

MINI OIL LEAK 14 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Have had the car back in my local BMW dealer twice, the second timeyesterday. The conclusion is that the oil stains are actualy oily water from the run off pipe for the AC. I am still not convinced. Apart from getting independent advice Im at a loss what to do. 1.Are there any MINI owners out there with AC who have noticed similair stains underneath their cars?. -
Common Rail Diesel Woes 12 Mar 2002 (Forum)
A couple of anecdotes relayed to me via a supplier of Automotive chemicals concerning CRD engines. As you know these new systems run at incredibly high pressures and inject the fuel directly into the combustion chamber, A peugeot was suffering from a misfire on one cylinder, a compression test revealed almost non-existent compression so the head was removed. -
Cowboy servicing 28 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Upon requesting (verbally) for an MOT prep with brakes for his ageing 2.0 GSi primera, (N.Ireland MOT's are conducted by official government run centres not local garages as on the mainland) and specifically declining any washing, oil, filters etc (due to DIY servicing) He gets an additional £86 parts + VAT & £30 + VAT labour bill for a full service, they even replaced a 6 month old fuel filter! -
Injectors or not??????? 11 Feb 2002 (Forum)
After nearly flattening the battery , waking the neighbours up and reving the gonads off of it ( wild rage!! ) , it runs ok when it is warm ( maybe not as well as it used to ) and starts first time . I have changed the glow plugs but that has made no difference . I don't know when the injectors were last replaced but they look pretty old , they are no 1 suspect in my mind . -
Help for something I really should know please 4 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Symptoms; before starting engine, gear lever will readily engage all gears; with engine running gear lever will not select against resistance; applying force to gear lever engages gear and stalls engine 1. Am I right to infer that the resistance and stalling tells me this is gear linkage/cable and not clutch failure? -
Driving old clunkers. Why not? 28 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Bob Harris on the radio, memories of grilled mushrooms with Brie and bacon as a starter, rib-eye steak, perfectly cooked by the chef at the Clegg Arms, friendly, attractive waitresses, good company, fine wine (for the others, not me, I drank a jug of water). Car was running very smoothly and sweetly - only slight annoyance was the the imposition of a new 40 mph limit where it was previously 60. Dunno why folks buy brand new cars. Wheel in each corner and one to hold, what more is there? -
CD player 3 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Because my music gene is either damaged or missing, and I drive solo much of the time, the unit was last used sometime during the summer. During the Christmas running around, one of the girls asked me to switch it on. It was fully 10 minutes before it started to play anything, even selecting different discs. It now seems to play normally. Question; why? Do CD players have a rechargeable battery which needs time for a charge to build up. -
Cheap Runaround for Sister 13 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Question is what would be a suitable replacement capable of occasional motorway journeys, Very cheap to run and insure and which will not attract the attention of light fingered scum ? I am thinking along the lines of: Volvo 340, VW polo saloon, Ford escort diesel. or even a Van. Cheers Dave -
CO2 adjustment 10 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I have an 11 year old non cat but fuel injected Toyota. There have been occasional cold running problems so I took it into my local main dealer for a diagnostic. They said my "CO2 was very weak" although everything else was fine. They have adjusted it -- but what precisely did they mean? Incidentally, there was a fault code 28 showing up in the memory, which relates to nothing in the manual. -
akin to heart surgery 1 Sep 2001 (Forum)
The heart surgeon thought for a second, leaned forward and said, " Yes, but do you do it with the engine running?" Don't usually post jokes, but I quite like this, hope you do. Regards, Mike
