Injectors or not??????? - Ben Bartlett
I have a 1992 Peugeot 405 1.8td which has covered 109000 miles and it is not a happy bunny . Cold starting is a problem at the moment . It starts first time and idles for about 10 seconds and then dies . ( if you rev it , it also dies ) . After nearly flattening the battery , waking the neighbours up and reving the gonads off of it ( wild rage!! ) , it runs ok when it is warm ( maybe not as well as it used to ) and starts first time . I have changed the glow plugs but that has made no difference . I don't know when the injectors were last replaced but they look pretty old , they are no 1 suspect in my mind . Is there anyway of checking or is it a case illimination .
This is my first turbo diesel 405 and the injectors look like a bit of a job to get to , any hints and tips will be most appreciated ,
cheers Ben B

Sounds like an air leak into the diesel system that bleeds out after these first few minutes of difficult running, hasn't got that diesel filter with the angled primer button?

The behaviour you describe is exactly what they do when you change the diesel filter leaving a bit of air in.

Following on from David W's line of thought, there can be another cause which is also related to changing of the fuel filter element ....

If the fuel filter element has been changed recently, were the rubber element seals refitted correctly?

There are typically two element seals. One is round and flat with a largish hole through the centre and this fits into a recess in the head of the filter to seal the top of the element to the filter head whilst allowing fuel to pass through the hole. The other is a conical seal that fits below the element and is a tight sliding fit on the centre screw to stop fuel in the filter from running straight back into the filter bowl.

I have known the conical seal to be fitted at the top of the filter in error, thus severely restricting fuel flow from the filter and giving symptoms very close to those you have described.

Also, in my experience of XUD engines the injectors do not suddenly deteriorate. I've known many engines with well over 100k that start and run well - perhaps with a little smoke, though.

No, if this phenomenon has started recently (especially concurrent with a service) then go for the air leak.

Ben - Search for the long thread on Escort 1600 Diesel as it ran to many pages and diagnosed and cured every cold-start fault on a diesel (a later thread focused on my love-life but the less said about that the better)

Hope this helps.
