  • peugeot 406 hdi 90bhp 2000 fuel problem 8 Sep 2003 (Forum)
There is a little like black pump below the first injector which seems to pump fuel into the fuel filter, its made by elth, can anyone tell me what this does, and if it is supposed to make quite a loud sound sometimes when running, this maybe a suspect in my fuel problem, the car is cutting out and displaying the engine management light which will start again immediatly but i have to turn the car over for a long time and it will eventually start, at this stage i have had a diagnostic of low fuel pressure so i was told to replace the lift pump in the tank which has not cured the problem has anyone got any ideas what the problem is.
  • high hc emissions? Renault 9 4 Sep 2003 (Forum)
The guy at the MOT station told me that it could need anything \"up to a new engine\". The car is in excellent mechanical condition and I want to keep it as a run around. Question is what does \"high HC\" mean and what is the likely remedy? I want to take it to a local garage for an opinion but would like some information about this fault so that I know what I am talking about.
  • ecotec engine problems ......! 28 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Sometimes the engine light (orange thing) comes on , if I turn off the engine then restart it sometimes goes out . The car on a run drives fine , good acceleration right through the rev-range no missfires at all , the car has only a K&N airfilter thingy on and no other mods engine wise . What on earth is wrong with the damn thing........anyone help me out with my new car ?????
  • Fiesta TDCI problems 28 Aug 2003 (Forum)
We have a Fiesta TDCI that after 2/3months from new developed an intermitant problem that manifests itself as either a short term lack of power, short term rough running or a total engine cut out. The supplying dealer has failed to sort the problem and does not seem able to apply logic to the diagnosis of the problem. Ford customer assitance does\'nt and the Ford technical helpline suggested a wiring/earth fault unique to the car or a fuel leak in the high pressure distribution.
  • Self deluding drivers 27 Aug 2003 (Forum)
These are the drivers who ONLY indicate when they know they're just about to do something stupid, dangerous and wrong!! Just done the obligatory M25 Thurrock run and spotted no end of contenders for the 2003 'Wreckless Driver of the Year' award nearly all of who indicated - albeit very briefly- before dangerously veering out, cutting in, changing lanes .... etc.
  • Service Station Fuel Pumps 20 Aug 2003 (Forum)
According to the pump, I got 59.78 litres in. Obviously, if this pump is to be believed, I must have been running on fumes, which I most clearly was not. So, apart from having a moan on here, who can I moan to in the authorities to get the calibration of the pumps checked?? Do they have regular calibration, because I have the feeling I have been ripped off!!
  • Xantia Won't start 12 Aug 2003 (Forum)
After several attempts, gave it up as a bad job, got some petrol from my garage, put that in, only a couple of litres and still won't start. The push button code is OK, coming on green, however, I have now run the battery down and will give it up until morning. Hopefully a full 5 litres of petrol from the garage will do the trick, but are there any obvious probs with this I should look at if this doesn't work?
  • Pierburg 1b carb 1 Jul 2003 (Forum)
There also seems to be fluid in the top of the carb (when i take the air box off the top) - some of the fluid seems to be running down this to the air filter and there is a strong smell of petrol. Was wondering if it's worth getting it working or just replacing the carb. The car has done 160K miles. Thanks in advance for any advice.
  • Rover 216 SI ? 24 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Im after any pointers for this model/range on what to actually look for to avoid a headache later. The car seems unmarked, engine seems to run smoothly, everything works inside and comes with 3 months warranty. When is the cambelt/cat due for renewal? Its last service was at 36K, and no indication of a cambelt change in the service record book.
  • Ford KA - Tappets hot or cold ? 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I have always adjusted the tappets when cold as stated in my manual. At his chain of dealerships it is common practice to run the engines through an engine flushing procedure using Forte engine flush, then adjust the tappets. I thought that the sole reason for adjusting the tappets was to allow for the expansion when hot so I can not understand the logic behind this practice.
  • Volvo 940 oil leak - help required ! 13 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Hi gang - my 1991 Volvo 940 SE turbo has developed a noticeable oil leak which concerns me. The oil appears to be dripping from the bottom of the black cam-belt cover but no traces of oil runs are visible externally so far as I can see so the leak appears to be behind the cover. A local guy has had a quick look and reckons it might be the crank shaft oil seal which is a job that apparently requires tools he doesn't have.
  • Smoother and quieter! 28 May 2003 (Forum)
Changed rear tyres which were showing wear indicators - relaced OE Dunlops with Pirelli P6000s to match fronts which were replaced last year 4. Had front tyres rebalanced - had a bad vibration above 70mph RESULT! My A4 seems to be running better than ever! Engine seems smoother and slightly more powerful, and there is definitely less road noise (P6000s really work!). And I don't think it's my imagination! :-) Pat

Discussing them publicly on this forum is a complete waste of time. If you aren\'t happy with the way the site is run, then please feel free to leave. No one is forcing you to stay here. Now can we move on and get back to the issues of discussing motoring perhaps? -- Dynamic Dave Back Room Moderator
  • Uninsured Motorists 21 May 2003 (Forum)
It read: "That this House notes that motorists who are the victims of accidents caused by uninsured or untraced drivers face increases on their premiums through no fault of their own; and calls for the uninsured drivers agreement and untraced drivers agreement between the Government and the Motor Insurers Bureau to be amended to prevent innocent motorists' premiums being arbitarily increased as a result of being victims of accidents caused by unisured or untraced drivers" Should the unfortunate ones affected be penalised, as now, or, should we all pay via the MIB levy i.e. what he is suggesting, or, attack the problem rather than the effect by increasing the punishment for driving uninsured and hit and run? • Xantia II at auction 14 May 2003 (Forum)
I find the price guides way out at Xantia prices, so thought I'd ask some people who know what they are doing. Mileage is of no concern to me - my current one is 152k and running fine, but I do want one that's in reasonable condition externally so I can spend all weekend polishing it and not think 'Don't know why I bothered, bit of a state really' ;) Any ideas? Ta.
  • Flat Battery vw polo 13 May 2003 (Forum)
The car is a polo - no alarm - and the VW assistance bloke who came out when i got the car home said that it was normal for a battery to run down over 2 weeks, although the manual with the car says it should be ok for 4 weeks. What do other BR-ers think - and what remedy would you suggest? Is it possible that the thing wasn\'t fully charged when new, or is it likely to be a duff battery in the first place?
  • Honda Accord Type R 13 May 2003 (Forum)
They're very quick, the VTEC motor makes all the right noises and of course there's the legendary Japanese build quality etc etc. Anyone got any experience of the Type R?? or have any other suggestions. I expect to run the car for at least 3 years and do about 12k miles PA. Any help/advice much appreciated. Jimmy
  • Tyre pressures hot or cold? 10 May 2003 (Forum)
I know they are supposed to checked when cold, but cold can be below zero or a warm summer day. I found a consistent difference of 2 psi as between the pressure after a long run and the same day when they had cooled down. I image the hot temperature would be more consistent than the cold, so why aren't pressures specified hot? And how are you supposed to get to a garage without using your tyres?
  • To sell or not to sell.. 25 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I'll probably take the allowance as it appears the better deal. My question is: Should I just take the allowance as an addition to my salary and continue to run my present car? It's a 1990 Alfa 75 with 128,000 miles, is in good condition, goes like a train and I service it regularly. As is the way with all cars, I've just had to spend a fair bit for a new clutch, discs and pads, fuel tank and exhaust.
  • Taxi driver - Viable career? 19 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Could any taxi drivers out there inform me of the various pros/cons and any rules/regs you will have to meet. I already own a suitable low mileage Mondeo so vehicle costs (other than running) are not an issue. I know I will probably have to take a drop in income but it will be worth it for a eas(ier) life. Before anyone says I will get more trouble I have no intention of working late weekends unless absolutely necessary!
