Morning Travel Advice -Driving Through Cent.London 2 Dec 2009 (Forum)
The shortest route in miles is straight through central london, up through Victoria, Marble Arch and St Johns Wood to join the A1 (North) past Brent Cross. The only other option is to drive west out of london and join the M25 (and take this up to the North Circular then A1 North)which seems like a long way to go to take a road which is usually very busy and prone to delays... Does anyone know at what time rush hour gets really bad in central London. -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 01 3.0 Possible auto box fault 16 Oct 2009 (Forum)
There's something wrong and I think it's probably the gearbox or t.c. Under load it's ok, but when I'm cruising or driving at a constant speed there's a slight judder\hiccup. Just as I come to a stop it judders or slams as it disengages from drive. A bit like a manual car that's stalling when you don't press the clutch. -
Ford Mondeo IV (2007 - ) - Which automatic, petrol or diesel ? 3 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I'm looking to buy a new, or nearly new Ford Mondeo Automatic in the near future and was wondering if any backroomers have experienced driving the 2.3 petrol and the 2.0 diesel automatics and could advise which was the best drive. I only do around 6k miles per annum, so I understand the cost differentials would probably favour a petrol. -
Suzuki Swift (1985 - 1993) - 91 1.0 - Too much oil...consequences of driving? 29 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Tomorrow I'll drain all the oil and put back some new one. Do you reckon that's enough? I mean, after I change the oil, can I just drive it (if it starts)? Thank you very much guys, I'm pretty freaked out, for I have no money to repair it or buy another one ! -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 1992 1800 Questions timing belt change Golf AAM 25 Feb 2009 (Forum)
On my engine the belt loops round the crankshaft, camshaft, passes the circular tensioner and also drives the auxilliary shaft. I think the auxilliary shaft drives the distributor so its timing is important. Off the cranksaft are some vee belts which drive the power steering pump, alternator and water pump. -
Rover 75 (1999 - 2005) - 2003 2.0 Radiator fan 14 Oct 2008 (Forum)
On my Rover 75 diesel CDT the radiator fan seems to operate all the time - even if I just turn on the ignition without starting the engine. I can't hear if it's on all the time when I'm driving but whenever I come to a halt and turn off the ignition the fan is always on and continues for a few seconds. This is irrespective of the ambient temperature and the type/speed of driving I have been doing. -
Every cloud.... fuel prices. 2 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Personally, I find myself driving even more efficiently than I did & cutting out the driving equivalent of 'snacks', e.g. not dashing out to buy one thing, but being a bit more planned & systematic & 'multiplexing' utility/pleasure trips where I can. -
Skoda Superb (2008 - ) - I've had a drive in one. 22 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Had the opportunity for a brief drive in a new Superb on Saturday. 2.0TDi 170 Elegance with DSG. There's no doubt it's a huge car with loads of cabin space - cabbies doing regular airport runs will be queuing up for them - it will take four passengers and all their luggage easily. -
MINI MINI One D R50 (2003 - 2007) - Buying an ex - driving instructor's car 7 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I found out from the sales person that the Mini One D that I liked very much previously belonged to a driving instructor. It is 06 reg and has done 65k miles (averaging more than 30k a year). The sales person assured me that the car is in pristine condition with any worn parts all replaced and they will be giving the 12 months warranty and MOT cover under the MINI cherished scheme. -
Small cars not fit for purpose 1 May 2008 (Forum)
rating. " How can it be right that the government and Red Ken wants to bully us into small cars when these cars can't even protect us from the injury that is most common in city driving? Still I wouldn't like to drive a BMW of any size: "For the last three years of Thatcham testing, BMW seats have never achieved a ?GOOD? rating." Ooops!! The Ultimate Whiplash Machine? Still, at least the new ones are better... -
Driving through flood water - how deep can you go? 25 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I reckon I was in 12 - 15" inches of water when panic set in, I didn't dare lose speed by turning round, eventually I found a farm drive that climbed out of the water where I turned round and retreated, discretion being the better part of valour! but what would happen if it had got deeper, what's the danger ? The ignition system is as high under the bonnet as it could be, so is it water entering the engine block through air intake or elsewhere? -
Rover 200 and 400 (1989 - 1996) - - Battery drain problem? 30 Aug 2007 (Forum)
t=42212&m=462049&v=e I have since bought a new alternator Due to electrics problems, I bought myself an internal volt meter, which enables me to see the voltage as I drive the car. I bought a new battery the other day thinking that my previous one was getting abit old now, so that may be a weak point. For the first day or so of having the new battery, whilst driving, the voltage showed 13-13.5 volts. -
Driving and diverted attention 8 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Interesting programme tonight ( Trevor McDonald 8pm) re how diversions affect our driving attention. It showed Merseyside police, even after the increased penalty for mobile use, nicking drivers at the rate of one every 4 minutes. Yesterday I was on the southbound M40 near Warwick at about 4pm .There was a lot of spray and poor light .Probably about half of drivers were showing headlights, and we had the usual assortment of parking lights, foglights and no lights in use. -
Driving test - latest ideas!!!! 3 Jan 2007 (Forum)
http://news.intranetics.co.uk/articles/3192.html All pretty words but what will happen? Especially when the following is an example of todays situation. From Auto Express "The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) gave L-tutors until the end of the year to pass its hazard perception test. But with only a few days left, it says 1,255 still haven't done the exam. Learner drivers have been sitting the computer-based assessment for more than four years, and can't qualify without it. -
Recommend a quiet car for me! 5 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I "think" that one of the most tiring aspects of driving is the noise. This is particulalry true of 'straight road' driving where the ride, cornering ability and so foirth plays a much smaller factor in the equation. Given that I am not taking supercars here - would anyone care to venture a few thoughts as to a suitable beast for the job. -
How much to spend on a first time driver 20 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Also if she is gonna be driving me around, i need air con, and I hate the idea of her driving around in a potentially lethal tin can with no creature comforst whatsoever.! So should I buy her a banger (£500-£1000), or maybe spend around £2-3k on her first car. -
Allergic to Modern Cars 14 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Most of you reading the following will no doubt think that I'm barking mad - and you could be right! However, i am one of minority of people who 'cannot' drive modern vehicles. The reasons for this are complex, but they essentially relate to a problem with the overly-engineered electrical circuitry of cars. When driving I'm quickly affected by nausea and blinding headaches. -
tempted to drive into car in front 21 Jun 2006 (Forum)
this morning i was driving along a dual carriageway in town, speed limit is 30. Approaching traffic lights which are showing red. No cars in front of me. On the other lane there is a car waiting at the traffic lights. In my rear view mirror i caught a glance of a mitsibishi evo weaving in and out of lanes at high speed. he over took me and swerved into my lane, nearly hitting the front of my car, then slaming on the brakes straight away to stop for the lights. i had to brake hard to prevent running into back of him. i had a young kid in the car and was very angry , i was about to get out to have a freindly chat with him but the lights changed and he zoomed off. if i was alone in the car i would have drove into him and scratch his new car. -
Squeaky Belt - possibly aircon - Avensis 15 Jun 2006 (Forum)
My timing belt, fan belt and air-con belt was changed last may, however, since then, i havent done a long journey like this with my air-con switched on, on the motorway. i sprayed some wd40 on the drive and air con belt, i think it helped a bit, but the noise is still there. i know that there is a special spray for squeeky drive belts, do these work well? i also found that the problem of the noise tends to happen 'more' when my air-conditioning is switched on, rather than just the cool air in the cabin. -
2004 Polo 1.4 brake deglazing ? 19 Feb 2006 (Forum)
t=37755 ) in the offside front wheel area is "probably" caused by the brakes needing deglazing due to "driving style". This will cost £220 as it is not covered by the warranty. Head office have repeated this "driving style" excuse when I spoke to them. I am confused as to how a squeak can be caused by shiny brakes when they are not engaged and secondly why this fault should occur at all after about 6 months in a brand new car.
