  • What's the point of the Hats?! 4 Feb 2010 (Forum)
"No problemo", breezed the SM - except that the special finance deal was coming to an end, and if we were to benefit from it a car had to be ordered as soon as possible (I know...I know) SM made suggestion - pay a £500 deposit to allow an order to be placed on the system - and if it transpired that the fuel pump was one of the dodgy brand, no problem, the £500 would be immediately refunded. What was there to lose?..... So, a call to his boss at the dealership who confirmed the refund, if necessary, and a £500 credit card payment duly made, lot's of handshaking, and exit one happy SM On the fol owing Monday it soon became clear that the car *did* have the unwanted fuel pump!
  • Chariot of ire 8 Aug 2009 (Ask HJ)
I recently bought a Y reg BMW Z3 with 3 months warranty from a dealer in Nottingham. (I live in Huntingdon.) I filled up with Shell petrol last week and...
  • Vauxhall Signum (2003 - ) - Signum rambles - The epilogue 12 Jun 2009 (Forum)
The Vauxhall was much quieter both in terms of engine and wind noise and had a lovely swell of torque which made it surprisingly diesel like to drive in the best sense. Never a keen revver though with a funny flat spot about 4.5k revs. Fuel consumption was good at around 37 mpg with my mainly long haul, fully laden usage and as mentioned elsewhere, when the fuel price differential was 10p a litre it worked out at the same pence per mile fuel cost as the Mondeo.
  • Robbing Hood 14 Mar 2009 (Ask HJ)
I have just been refused petrol at my local fuel station. The reason, you might ask? It was a cold day and I had the hood up on my hooded sweatshirt. (I'm...
  • Win diesel 7 Mar 2009 (Ask HJ)
You state that in lower temperatures diesels use more fuel. What is the thermodynamic basis for this statement? I find it difficult to figure out why...
  • Petrol into Diesel (Again) 15 Dec 2007 (Forum)
True, prevention is better than cure but I have actually never seen or heard of a blown up engine and unserviceable fuel system due to wrong fuel type, maybe it's a conspiricy, maybe it's like when you were a kid and you were told the bogey man would get you if you didn't go to sleep.
  • Will standard E10 petrol damage the engine of my car? 11 Sep 2025 (Ask HJ)
Petrol grades are changing this year. I’ve read that I should buy superior grades rather than basic, as the latter may damage the engine. Is this true?
  • Are there problems with Honda Jazz CVT gearboxes? 13 Jan 2025 (Ask HJ)

  • 2001 Mk2 1.2 16v Petrol - 2001 Mk2 1.2 16v Petrol - turns over, won’t start. 13 Jul 2024 (Forum)
Turnover time was about 3 min in total. I assume that should have been plenty to get fuel up to the injectors. I have never had to bleed a petrol system. Maybe bleeding is needed with Clio. I have zero experience with fault diagnosis on Renault Cars. If this was a 40 year old car with a carburettor and points I would be able to quickly diagnose the issue.
  • Renault Clio E-tech hybrid - Impressions after the first 1000 miles 21 Apr 2024 (Forum)
The data log reads Total distance 1004.6 miles Distance travelled in electric mode 470.1 miles Average fuel consumption 54.7mpg Average electric consumption 8.9miles/ kWh Total recuperated energy 48.6kWh Average speed 21.9 mph  Without electrical assistance, a 1.6 petrol automatic like this would probably return around 30mpg on a good day (purely a guess).

  • Using km/h speedo in UK 1 Oct 2023 (Forum)
Also, mental calculations are not difficult - 20 MPH is 30 km/h, 30 is 50, 40 is 65, 50 is 80, 60 is 100, 70 is 110. NSL on single carriageway is 100 km/h - an easy to remember number.  As a bonus, the fuel economy is shown in km/L - a more rationale unit compared to MPG (we don't buy fuel in gallons).  Of course this is a personal thing and many others may find it weird to use km/h :-)  I need to observe next few months whether I can keep it permanently in km/h or once the fad is over I'd revert back to MPH.

More swayed towards an SUV however please send me any suggested cars I should be looking at, very obvious but I need it to be reliable (that’s what they all say) and quite economical. However I do get a fuel card with work so fuel isn’t really an issue. Thanks again,
