Interim bangernomics 22 Nov 2020 (Forum)
owner of a 2005 Focus Zetec 1.6 petrol (100ps), with 71k on the clock, 5 months MOT and half a tank of fuel. It's a little battle scarred, but mechanically seems fine. New clutch 3 months ago, too. Also, if I'm not mistaken, chain cam so no pesky belt to worry about. A slight issue after a 12 hour shift though - I'd left the sidelights on (used to auto lights, you see) and returned to a flat battery. -
BMW 330d - Disabled EGR results in signifcant DPF mileage 24 Apr 2020 (Forum)
My query is, if the EGR is designed to reduce emissions, why by removing it does my vehicle now produce significanlty less soot than with it in operation? Surely if it is producing less soot, this means less regenerations and less fuel required to actually facilitate the regeneration process? Surely this is is much better for the environment? Thoughts please! -
Toyota Prius - Real MPG 26 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Gen 4 Fuel consumption. I have had four Toyota Hybrids over the past 12 years and this Gen 4 is the best yet. However real MPG depends very much on the tyres (wheel size), climate, and the type of jouney. -
Chevrolet Cruze and Fiat 500l - Auto under £6000 with decent boot 22 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Similarly I would prefer something 2012 onwards bit if it's high spec or in decent condition then I'm easy. I would prefer petrol if possible but fuel economy is more a priority as I notice petrol autos with my requirements are rare! Wouldn't mind an estate if it's not too massive. Parking sensors and arm rest would be a bonus! I'm in South Wales but can travel within about 90 minutes. -
what would you choose? 18 Nov 2019 (Forum)
i do around 16-20k miles per year. up and down the m6 so mostly moving but some start/stop traffic. im thinking a diesel would give me better mpg than the petrol ive got so would save on fuel costs. I dont really want to go over £8500 which will be financed through savings/loan. currently i have a st-line 1ltr ecoboost 2018 focus which is leased and goes back in april 2020. im getting 43.1mpg over 28k miles so far. -
Ford Focus Saloon - Limp Mode at 3k Revs - Focus 1.6 TDCI 21 May 2019 (Forum)
Are there any other potential causes for this apart from the DPF? This is the only code it's showing but I've read it could be fuel filter (not likely as replaced last year), injectors, wastegates, hoses etc? Not really sure it there's any stop gap fixes for DPF as new one seems to be near £1k Cheers -
Mazda CX-5 - Petrol or Diesel for city & occasional long haul 29 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Also am a bit confused about tax costs - both models list as £30 but I read elsewhere this changed in 2017 & diesels now attract £140 tax minimum? Really don't know what to do. Worried about the overall fuel efficiency and possible DPF problems. Advice much appreciated! -
MG ZS 2017 - Tyre Puncture repair badly done 15 Jan 2019 (Forum)
The thing is, that I really like the car now after 5 weeks... just disappointed in the selling dealer. Fuel consumption overall all totted up using brim to brim and odometer appears to be 40.01..over the 1700 miles Happily my local dealer are proving to be super and helpful and their tyre fitters (independent of them on the job. -
Which is better Yaris, or Panda? 28 Aug 2018 (Forum)
I am wonder why Panda can do 67 mpg better than the Yaris at 64mpg because the Panda got massive a turbo lag till 2,400rpm then it start to deliver power this would lose fuel consumption because of turbo lag but the Yaris is smooth torque it start from 1,500rpm it pull strong all way to 3,000rpm, if the Panda’s top gear is rev too much on 70mph I was expect the Panda to be more thirsty than the Yaris? -
VW Golf Mk6 1.4 tsi - Buying a used Mk6 GOLF 1.4 TSI with new Timing Chain 11 Aug 2018 (Forum)
Plus replaced timing chain = Rebuilt Engine. So would this affect fuel economy? How can I tell if the rebuild has been done proper? Look forward to hearing the replies - Cheers. -
Nissan Qashqai+2 - Finally traded my Tino in 1 May 2018 (Forum)
I really wanted an automatic and wasn’t after a diesel but I do enough long runs and will be driving to France this year so the fuel economy will be nice. Had Diesel vans for years so kind of know what to expect with maintenance. 12 month warranty and 2 years free servicing plus got £400 for my Tino which is what I paid for it and it’s only worth £100 now. -
Ford Focus Estate 1.6 TDCI - Fumes inside car. In need of some clarification! 16 Nov 2017 (Forum)
They are even more obvious if I open the bonnet and take a good sniff - they appear to originate in the engine area. They're getting inside via the vents. My mechanic inspected the exhaust, fuel injector seals and much else. He came to the conclusion that the issue was caused by two things: the fact that the EGR valve was stuck open plus the need for a DPF regen. So the EGR valve has now been changed and the fumes do seem a little reduced. -
Mazda 6 Tourer - Petrol or Diesel 18 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Based on HJs Real MPG it suggests 39.1MPG in the petrol or 48.9MPG in the diesel. That equates to about £400 per year less fuel cost in the diesel at current rates. Thats £4000 over 10 years minus the £2k purchase price difference = £2k overall. (Appreciate all of this is a bit speculative) Residuals after 10 years are likely to be negligible? -
BMW 3 Series - Which car to go for 11 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Since i am going to be doing so many miles and mainly on motorway looking for something comfortable and easy, manual or petrol i am not sure but after reading the forums looks like manual is better for good fuel efficieny. Initially i was looking at insignia but i dont think they will last me too long and resale value might be really bad. Am i going in right direction or are there any other better options. please suggest. -
ford 2012 mondeo titanium x sport (Auto) - 2.0 ecoboost piston destroyed 5 Jun 2017 (Forum)
Can a head gasket fail suddenly to the extent it causes hydrolok? Could an injector fail to allow liquid fuel to enter cylinder to do the same without a fault code? Material fault in piston or con rod are also possibilities. I have found very little info on 2.0 engine failure of standard tune engine, does anyone have a similar story? -
Volkswagen Polo IV - VW Polo 1.4 2006 juddering and engine light on 5 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Now, when I drive it for a more than a few minutes the engine light comes on solid amber and when idling it keeps nearly cutting out. Also, not sure if I am imagining this but it seems to be consuming a bit more fuel than I'd expect and it seems to be struggling with power in second gear- i live at the top of a big hill and had to put it down to 1st to get up it. I'm not happy with the dealer to say the least, it was MOT'd just before I bought it and allegedly serviced so surely this is something that should have been noticed? -
Kia ceed vs ford focus 21 Feb 2017 (Forum)
I've also read somewhere that the DPF would need replacing at 70,000 miles? I also have been told several times that 1.6 tends to suffer from fuel pump failure hence why thisbis the 1.8. Sorry for babbling, female, blonde and clueless! :-Do http://www.danielmaxwellcarsales.co.uk/detail/230722/used-kia-ceed-1-6-3-sw-crdi-5dr-manual-stockport http://www.aireboroughmotorcompany.co.uk/used-cars/ford-focus-1-8-tdci-titanium-5dr-leeds-201612090467709? -
Renault Scenic - Need to change car? 18 Nov 2016 (Forum)
Preferred options - possibly a SUV (although not many will seat 5 in comfort), or an estate (Octavia/Volvo/Ford/Honda), which will be challenging on that budget. I also need something with good fuel economy because of the mileage I do and something that just feels solid and predictable in poor conditions. I've not had a car loan/pcp for many years so don't know what current thoughts are about them and whether they would make the budget go further. -
Vauxhall Zafira A - Idling Hesitation 12 Jul 2016 (Forum)
I also know that the thermostat needs replace as it is stuck open but I don't think that that would be be the cause of the hesitation. I have changed the air filter. I can't say whether or not this is affecting the fuel economy as I am not sure what I should be getting, I filled the tank recently and have used just over a quarter of a tank covering 185 mile (combined motorway and town driving). Not sure if this is good or bad. -
Hyundai i10 1.2 Premium (2 months in... 27 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Have yet to deploy Cruise Control and Limiter as don't get much opportunity and when I do I forget they're available! I can't really tell you anything about (accurate) fuel economy as I've never been that obsessed about that aspect. I'm clearly not doing journeys long enough to get any real idea. Max journey mileage in any one direction so far has only been 28. It really is a pleasure to drive, so much so that I only now ever use the A3 at weekends or if I'm doing 100-miles somewhere midweek in one hit.
