  • Honda GCV 135 22 Sep 2025 (Forum)
This engine and the longer stroke 5.5hp GCV160 are still current models and are unusual for being an OHC design with a wet cambelt, i.e running in oil within the engine. They are very quiet and are praised for efficiency and low emmisions. I have a fairly comprehensive guide to the engine which tells me that the valve clearances need checking every 150 hours (reckon mine has done between 150 and 200 hours) though there is no mention as to what the clearances should be.
  • Buying an X-1 2016/7 advice 24 Jun 2025 (Forum)
I do tend not to follow the manufacuters intervals and do an oil change every 6 months or so with the manufacturers oil.  Following this, I did manage to run a 309 Diesel for over 250k on the orignal engine before the injector pump and rear suspension failed. On this subject of timing chains and wet belts, is it better to change the oil with the manufacurers recommended oil sooner rather than later?
  • Bmw 520d - Wheel alignment. 3 Jun 2025 (Forum)
I have recently had 2 new tyres fitted to the rear of my 2012 520d. Pirelli P7 Centurato run flats I was told the tracking was out and paid to have it done. Before it was tracked, the handling felt solid. Now when I go round a corner (particularly left) it feels like it is going to step out, even at a low speed.
  • Dacia Duster - Battery charger 20 Dec 2024 (Forum)
Obviously I'll make an easy access, waterproof connection behind the bumper to link the two. I can't see a problem having the charger connected to the battery whilst the engine is running. I've merely posted this up for any comments that might agree/disagree.
  • Audi 100 SL 1970 - Advice on selling vintage Audi 100 14 Dec 2024 (Forum)
He was a mechanic by trade and so everything has been kept to the highest standard, though the car hasn't run for approx 10 years but has been kept inside a garage through this period. Would anyone be able to offer some advice on the best place to try and find a good home for the car? The car is located in Farnham Common, SL2.
  • Kia Picanto - Camera for Cross Traffic Alert 8 Oct 2024 (Forum)
I would have loved a non wired solution to the issue, cones or such like, but I think I've run out of options.  Most cameras I see are for reversing, can anyone recommend any for pulling out (or even both, when I'm edging the car back in!?) Thank you so very much
  • Mercedes-Benz GLA - Crunching Noise When Coming To Complete Stop 30 Aug 2024 (Forum)
Best I can describe is it feels like something is clamping on under the car at the very last second before stopping and it's impossible to come to a nice smooth stop. Happens every time, whether the car is running hot or cold. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Cheers, Danny.

  • Citroen C3 - Timing belt degradation 2 Apr 2024 (Forum)
Obviously I understand if the timing belt had broken that will cause great damage but in terms of a timing belt degradation what damage could possibly be caused to my engine ? The car was running fine, no typical signs of a timing belt issue until the red warning light came on and requested I turn the engine off. Hoping someone on this forum can help a complete and utter car novice understand the scope of the issue- thank you in advance

  • When was ‘peak petrol’? 27 Jan 2024 (Forum)
Seems to be a consensus of opinion that ‘peak diesel’ was the early 2000s. Common rail or PD injection systems that give relatively quiet running, easy cold starting, plenty of torque, tall gearing, decent fuel economy and none of the emissions related DPF and AdBlue problems that blight newer diesels. …but when was/is peak petrol? The demise of new internal combustion engines over the next decade or two could suggest that we’ve not peaked yet, but a lot of future investment will be spent on EV, hydrogen etc.
  • Nissan X-Trail - Trouble starting - but the battery's as strong as 20 Jan 2024 (Forum)
My usual mechanic thought it might be the glow plugs but tested them and they were fine. Once it's been running for a few seconds it'll start again no problem and will give me no bother for the rest of the day. Can anyone think of anything it might be, before I take it to another garage and get scalped?
  • Ford fiesta. - Thoughts?low mileage, 2k in 2 years. Is this good? 4 Sep 2023 (Forum)
I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on purchasing a 45k miles fiesta that has only done 2k in the last two years  I always buy low mileage but know under use can be as bad as overuse . Things I was going to check , battery, flat spots on tyres. , blocked water runs and rust - tail gate etc. , oil change regardless of mileage. Fluids in general.  I once bought a low mileages pristine sports car and the turbos blew within a week as the oil channels were blocked through lack of use.
  • Renault Austral - First Impressions 12 Aug 2023 (Forum)
I’m currently running a Renault Austral, ahead of its launch in the UK later this summer. Only had it a couple of days, but probably done 300 miles so far. It’s the replacement for the Kadjar, in that it’s a C segment SUV, with a 1.2 ICE linked to a full hybrid system.
  • Car tyre - how many to change 21 Jun 2023 (Forum)
The rear tyres were recently changed, and the front ones had have around 4mm of tread left, which I was hoping would last until winter.  What's the best option to save money without costing me more in the long run :  buying the used tire for £25 replacing only one front tyre with a new one Or changing both front tyres with new ones?  Here is a photo of the plug
  • Vauxhall Combo 2009 - Trouble with key barrel 9 Jun 2023 (Forum)
When I took the key out, the dashboard lights wouldn't turn off. This made me wonder if the power was still running, and sure enough, windscreen wipers still on, so only way I can get the power to go out is by disconnecting the battery. So I have power, can turn the key but no start...is this an immobiliser issue, a key issue or key barrel issue?
  • Large SUV - Best mpg Large SUV 25 Apr 2023 (Forum)
We have 2x200 mile journeys each week and 3-4 times per year we make a near 600 mile round trip to visit my family. So the miles are high therefore mpg and running costs are important to us, as well as comfort. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  • Land Rover Discovery Sport - Broken electronic handbrake switch 11 Mar 2023 (Forum)
The part is available on eBay but it won’t cut the mustard as a genuine part. How long should I let this run it’s course? Could the car be written off because of this? Has anyone else had this issue? Any recommendations? Thank you.

  • Daihatsu Skywing - Turn Indicator Circuit and LED Substitution? 4 Feb 2023 (Forum)
The wiring loom probably needs replaced (multiple issues) but I'm thinking that, as a work around for the turn indicators, I could run three LEDs (plus a resistor as necessary) in series off each working circuit, to give me two working lights in each location. Any forseeable issues with this, apart from the hassle of actually doing it?
