Buying an X-1 2016/7 advice - DieselMan1966

HI all

I saw an X1 for sale on autotrader a couple of days ago, a 2.0 diesel auto X-drive, what should I be looking out for?

I'm aware of the timing chain issue with some of the engines, assuming its had a full service history and regular oil changes, should this be ok? I do tend not to follow the manufacuters intervals and do an oil change every 6 months or so with the manufacturers oil. Following this, I did manage to run a 309 Diesel for over 250k on the orignal engine before the injector pump and rear suspension failed.

On this subject of timing chains and wet belts, is it better to change the oil with the manufacurers recommended oil sooner rather than later?

This will have the 2.0 N47 engine which is more prone to timing chain failure. They always benefit from more regular oil changes than BMW stipulate. If you're happy it has been serviced annually/10k miles, then it's likely to be long lived

The area to keep an eye on is sooting up of the EGR and inlet manifold. These clog up and reduce airflow resulting in higher risk of turbo damage. This issue is somewhat unavoidable unfortunately. You can get these cleaned but it is a manual process. Separately you can consider getting it carbon cleaned too. DPFs can also get problematic at higher mileages (c.120k) and these an now be cleaned (off the car, not using injected chemicals) rather than the incredible expense of getting them replaced which is what BMW will tell you

As it's auto, then it will benefit from a gearbox service. BMW claim these are sealed for life but the reality is that will benefit from a service every 60k miles. It will cost around £600 but will futureproof your gearbox. Also worth getting the rear diff oil changed too. Less than £100 but vital

Apologies that this may seem somewhat depressing but I know from first hand what these cars need having owned a few

thanks for the advice, I'm a beliver that all transmission fluid should be changed around 50,000 miles anyway as the fluid degraes over time, more so with the more modern lubrication, £600 for a service and filter against the cost of the replacment unit! I did have a corsa and a 307 which benefitted from a Terra-clean which cured the EGR issue on the both.

I currently cover around 12,000 miles per annum so the engine oil change should be done every 6,000 pm the basis a service is cheaper than an engine replacement!

I was looking at the diesel as its almost twice the economy, I will be driving from County Durham to Linconlshire every few weeks later in the year, a round trip of 400 miles. Whilst all wheel drive is nice to have, in my case, its not essential. I have a Skoda that is in need of some front suspension struts and springs as well as the brakes and pads changing, so was considering changing it
